Chapter 16: A Princess on Lothal
Dedicated to SunHunterz23
Shortly after the events on Takobo, Jedi Knight Kyra Kryze-Kenobi and Princess Leia Organa were sent to Lothal by Senator Bail Organa, on a mission to provide the Phoenix Squadron with three new Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvettes. Because Lothal was still under Imperial occupation, the corvettes were quickly intercepted by several TIE fighters after dropping out of hyperspace.
"Attention. This is Lieutenant Lyste. Lothal is now a restricted system by Order of the Emperor," an Imperial officer stationed on the nearest Star Destroyer said. "Identify yourselves immediately."
"Greetings, Lieutenant. We come bearing relief supplies for the citizens of Lothal. Our mission is sanctioned by the Imperial Senate," Leia explained.
"I wasn't informed of your visit nor do you have a landing permit," Lieutenant Yogar Lyste replied, falling silent for several moments before hailing the corvette again. "Attention, senatorial convoy. Your landing has been granted and fighters will escort you to the Jalath City Depot for processing. I'll see you there."
"I look forward to it, Lieutenant," Kyra's sister – who was now sixteen years old – said before ending the transmission.
Leia turned towards Kyra and sighed, "Well, there's no turning back now."
Once they had landed on the surface of Lothal, Leia greeted Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger, who were wearing their stormtrooper disguises.
"Hey, excuse me, miss. Uh, where's your commander?" Kyra heard Ezra ask as Leia met them at the bottom of the ramp.
"Right here, Cadet," Kyra answered as she followed her sister.
The princess leaned closer to Kyra and muttered, "Not much of a welcoming committee."
Kyra chuckled, "This is Kanan and Ezra. They're from my squadron."
Leia nodded as she turned to the rebels, "Well, unless you want to know the deck officer, too, I suggest you put your helmets back on and keep your mouths shut."
Ezra's jaw dropped to the floor, shocked that a girl his age could speak to him as she had. When he opened his mouth to speak, Kanan stopped him and told him to put his helmet back on. Ezra reluctantly did so as Kyra greeted the deck officer and informed him that she and Leia were there to distribute their relief aid.
"Stand by," the deck officer replied. "My orders are to inspect the cargo for contraband and detain these vessels until the lieutenant arrives. Scanning crew, move out."
Once the stormtroopers had walked past the Alderaanian ambassadors, Kanan said, "Well, this plan's off to a good start."
Leia stated that her plan was going perfectly before asking where the rest of the Spectres were.
When Kanan assured her that his team would arrive later on, Leia nodded and said, "Good. Then you can steal my ships. I'll explain later. First, Kyra and I must deal with the lieutenant. Follow our lead and try to keep up."
"Why does she get to give orders?" Ezra complained as Lieutenant Lyste's transport landed nearby. "I don't get to give orders."
"Do you ever listen to yourself?" Kanan countered.
"Yes, and I happen to be very interesting," Ezra retorted, crossing his arms over his chest.
"You must be Leia Organa, princess of the royal house of Alderaan," Lieutenant Lyste said before turning to Kyra. "And you must be Krystal Organa, princess of the royal house of Alderaan and Captain of the Alderaanian Guard."
"And aides to our father, Senator Bail Organa," Kyra added. "We come with relief supplies for Lothal's needy who are suffering terribly as a result of the rebel insurgency here."
The lieutenant nodded sympathetically, "I admire your bravery, miss. It can't be easy returning to the place where you were kidnapped by one of the rebel cells."
"Well, the needs of the people outweigh my fears," Kyra replied. "We can't just allow innocent civilians to starve, now can we?"
Lieutenant Lyste shook his head, "No, of course not. Lothal has indeed suffered, as has Alderaan. From what I hear, your ships have an unfortunate habit of falling into rebel hands. I assure you, that won't happen on my watch."
As the three Hammerhead corvettes were grounded, Kyra said, "Gravity locks? This is hardly necessary."
"I insist," the lieutenant replied, gesturing to the stormtroopers behind him. "Plus a trooper detachment, and for extra security...Walkers will guard your ships from the rebel insurgency. All for your safety, miss."
Kyra glanced at Leia before straightening to her full height, eye-to-eye with the Imperial lieutenant.
"When addressing me, you will either use the title 'Captain' or 'Your Highness,'" Kyra said coldly. "The same goes for my sister."
Lieutenant Lyste began to apologize, but Leia proceeded to talk over him, "As our ships are detained, we will require your shuttle to begin our work."
"Oh? Um, my shuttle?" the lieutenant stammered. "C-certainly, I could arrange for other transportation."
"No. Your shuttle. We need to leave immediately," Leia stated before turning to Ezra and Kanan. "You two, bring those supplies and escort us to the trauma area at once."
After the rebels boarded the shuttle, Kanan said, "I hate to say it, but whoever came up with this plan severely underestimated the Empire's security."
When Leia bit her lower lip and apologized, Kanan relented, "Don't be. It's not your fault."
When the princess insisted that it was, Ezra said, "We need those ships. Why didn't you just hand them off to us in deep space?"
"It's not that simple," Kyra answered, coming to her sister's defense. "If the Empire could prove Alderaan provided ships to the rebels we'd lose our seat in the Senate and be charged with treason. But if they're stolen on a planet controlled by the Empire..."
"Alderaan would be blameless," Kanan finished as he turned towards Leia. "Have to admit, that was a good plan."
A sad smile appeared on Leia's face, "Well, now we need a new one."
As the rebels racked their brains for a new strategy, Chopper opened Ezra's private comm channel and told them a squadron of stormtroopers had found their hideout and were already waiting for them. When Leia wondered what they were going to do, Kanan instructed her to follow his lead as he lowered the main ramp of the Lambda-class shuttle.
As the rebels disembarked, they were met by an Imperial commander wearing a black shoulder pauldron, who said, "This is a secure site. State your business."
"I'm taking the Alderaanian ambassadors on a scouting mission for possible refugee relocation," Kanan explained.
"This is not a safe location for you," the commander replied. "There's a high level of rebel activity happening at the moment."
"Well, we're finishing our survey. We could take these prisoners back to Jalath for you," Kanan offered.
"That won't be necessary," the commander assured him. "We have orders to terminate one of them immediately."
"Hold on, trooper," Leia said as she stepped forward. "As a representative of the Senate I demand to know what this man has done."
"He's a fugitive from an Imperial prison," the commander answered, gesturing to the former Governor of Lothal, Ryder Azadi. "Now, depart immediately for your own safety. Where you find one rebel, there are usually more."
As the commander spoke, Chopper began beeping frantically and spinning in a circle, informing Kanan that he was receiving a signal. A large shadow blocked out the sun and Kyra shoved Leia out of harm's way as Captain Hera Syndulla opened fire from aboard the Ghost, scattering the stormtroopers as their armored transports were demolished. As Kyra, Leia, Kanan, Ryder, and Ezra took cover behind one of the transports, Garazeb Orrelios and Sabine Wren – whose hair was now dyed indigo and teal – exchanged fire with the Imperials.
"Your friends might shoot you in that armor," Ryder said to Kanan.
"That's not a bad idea, Governor," Kyra replied. "Take the princess hostage and stun me."
When Ryder argued against the plan, Kyra persisted, "If we're seen leaving with you, we'll both be labeled as traitors, but if Leia's taken prisoner and I'm disabled, the Empire won't realize we're going along willingly."
"I'll warn Sabine," Ezra said when Ryder finally nodded. "You better make it look good."
Ryder shoved Kanan and Ezra aside before turning towards Kyra, who briefly grappled with the governor before he stunned her with a shot from his blaster. When Kyra woke up, she was inside one of the Imperial tents, Lieutenant Lyste's eyebrows cinched with concern. She groaned and sat up, but before the Imperial officer could say anything, a ship's engines grew louder overhead. When Kyra walked outside, followed by Lieutenant Lyste, she saw the Phantom landing at the heart of the Imperial camp.
"This is the rebel ship we've been looking for," the lieutenant said as he turned to his commander. "Set weapons for stun."
When Kanan, Ezra, and Leia disembarked, Lieutenant Lyste greeted them with a scowl.
"I'd think you'd be pleased to see me safe and sound, Lieutenant," Leia said as she arched an eyebrow.
Lieutenant Lyste raised his hands in a placating gesture as he ordered the troopers to lower their blasters, "Of course, Your Highness. Very pleased. Just, um, surprised."
Gesturing to Kanan and Ezra, Leia added, "These brave troopers saved me from those rebels. They deserve a medal."
The lieutenant nodded emphatically and gestured to the Hammerhead corvettes behind him, which were currently being stolen by the Spectres, as he stated, "As you can see, your ships are safe and sound, right where you left them."
Kyra scowled and crossed her arms over her chest, "If you're trying to impress us, Lieutenant, you're doing a miserable job of it."
The lieutenant's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "What do you mean?"
When Kyra gestured behind him, Lyste finally turned and watched as Sabine piloted the first corvette away from the Imperial depot.
"I-I didn't authorize this!" Lieutenant Lyste insisted. "Who's piloting that ship?"
As the words left his mouth, one of the stormtroopers spotted the rebels and opened fire. Sabine Wren shot at the troopers in the corvette but was stopped when a nearby AT-AT opened fire on the Alderaanian vessel. Before the walker could destroy the corvette, the Ghost swooped low over the Imperial depot and shot down the AT-AT while Kanan and Ezra made quick work of the troopers on the ground. After disarming Lieutenant Lyste, the rebels ran towards the Phantom, but were quickly stopped by a second AT-AT.
Kanan turned to Kyra and said, "Secure the third ship. I'll handle the walker."
As the trio made their way towards the third corvette, Kanan cut through two of the second walker's legs with his lightsaber and Leia grabbed a blaster from one of the fallen troopers, opening fire as Kyra did the same with her standard-issue blaster. Once the former Governor of Lothal and Chopper had removed the second gravity lock, Kanan Jarrus prepared the second corvette for takeoff as Ryder Azadi freed the third and final ship. Before the rebels could board the vessel, Imperial reinforcements arrived in an armored transport. Without turning towards the boy, Kyra assured Ezra that she and Leia would take care of the Imperials.
"Thank goodness you've arrived," Leia said as the troopers disembarked and the rebels boarded the third corvette. "The rebels are stealing our ships."
When the AT-AT pilots were ordered to kill the rebels, both the princess and the captain protested.
"I'm sorry, but we can't let your ships fall into rebel hands," the commander replied.
As a third AT-AT opened fire on the Ghost, the final Hammerhead corvette pulled away from the depot, its thrusters knocking the Imperial reinforcements and last walker off its feet. As Ezra Bridger jumped onto the ramp of the corvette, he turned and quickly said goodbye to Kyra and Leia, the pair giving him their permission to stun them.
As Lieutenant Lyste rushed over to the Alderaanian ambassadors and helped them to their feet, Kyra said, "Our ships. You lost our ships."
"I'm afraid so," Lyste admitted.
"You should be afraid!" Kyra growled. "Just wait until we tell the Senate that the Imperial presence on Lothal is helpless against the rebels."
"No, no, no. That won't be necessary," the lieutenant promised. "I assure you, Alderaan will be fully compensated for your lost ships."
Kyra pretended to consider his offer for a moment, "Fine. Oh, and we'll need your shuttle so we can return home."
"My shuttle. Right," Lyste replied as he looked around the depot. "Uh, where is it?"
Leia arched an eyebrow, "Lieutenant, did you lose your ship, too?"
Instead of answering, Lyste said, "I'll summon you another right away."
Leia Organa and Kyra Kryze-Kenobi shared a glance and smirked as the flustered Lieutenant Yogar Lyste shuffled away, the sisters amused to see the Empire in such disarray.
