Chapter 14: Stealth Strike
Dedicated to pxrfectly_sxrene
Over the next couple of weeks, Jedi Knight Kyra Kryze-Kenobi sent the Spectres on missions to a medical center that was abandoned after the Clone Wars, led the Phoenix Squadron on a mission to Ibaar, promoted Captain Hera Syndulla to the rank of Phoenix Leader after the previous pilot was killed in a skirmish with the Empire, and acquired a prototype of a new starfighter named the Blade Wing – or B-wing – for short. Now, she and Lieutenant Commander Ezra Bridger were traveling through hyperspace on a fully-staffed CR90 corvette. Kyra – wearing her Alderaanian uniform – sat at the helm and Ezra was seated to her left in one of the technician's chairs.
"We'll be arriving in the Del Zennis system any moment," a pilot told her.
"Well, we're coming up on the last known position of our missing patrol, but I already checked the star charts. There's nothing out here," Ezra corrected. "But obviously, that's not true since the ship went missing, so, you know, there must be something out here."
Kyra frowned, "I've got a bad feeling about this."
As soon as the words left her mouth, the same pilot informed her that they had lost control of the hyperdrive.
The corvette shuttered and Kyra instructed her crew to man their emergency positions as Ezra asked, "What's happening? Are we under attack?"
Suddenly, the corvette was pulled out of hyperspace, which was not supposed to be possible. As Kyra asked for a status report, the shadow of an Imperial vessel loomed over them.
When Ezra asked if the ship was a Star Destroyer, Kyra shook her head, "No. It's something else. Send a distress signal. Now!"
Kyra activated her personal comm channel and said, "Phoenix Home to Ghost. We've been pulled out of hyperspace. The Empire—"
Before she could finish the corvette lost power and left them dead in space. The crew of Phoenix Home were brought aboard the Imperial vessel and taken to the cellblock while Kyra and Ezra were brought to the bridge.
"Rebels," the Imperial admiral said with disgust as he turned to face Bridger and Kryze. "Out here searching for your missing patrol, I assume."
"We are members of the Corporate Alliance," Kyra stated. "You have taken possession of my ships illegally and I demand you release us."
"You are in a position to demand nothing, Commander Organa," the admiral replied, his blonde hair and icy blue eyes matching the tone of his voice.
Kyra managed to suppress a smile, amused that the Empire still had not figured out who she really was.
Taking her silence for shock, the admiral continued, "Ah, yes, I am familiar with your activities in this sector. I suspected if we captured even one rebel ship, others would race to the rescue. But I dared not hope we'd capture someone as significant as you. And what would your name be, young man?"
Kyra nearly laughed out loud when Ezra answered, "Jabba the Hutt."
"Indeed. You are a tad small for a Hutt, but I know someone else that goes by the name Jabba. Ezra Bridger," the admiral replied. "I imagine Agent Kallus will be quite pleased to hear you have joined us. Secure them."
Kyra and Ezra were led to the cellblock, Kenobi having just been shoved into her cell when she heard blaster shots and screams outside. She used the Force to open her cell door and rushed into the corridor to find Ezra disabling and disarming the stormtroopers.
"I'm impressed," she said as Ezra cut through her restraints, sighing when the boy handed her one of the trooper's blasters. "I wish I was able to use my own lightsaber."
They imprisoned the three Imperials inside one of the cells as reinforcements raced around the corner. Before the stormtroopers could shoot, Kyra set her blaster to stun and fired, stopping the troopers in their tracks. When an astromech followed the Imperials, Kyra recognized the droid as Chopper, even though he was painted in Imperial colors. Ezra and Kyra slowly looked at each other, suddenly realizing that the troopers were not enemies, but friends in disguise. Kyra grimaced as she removed the stormtroopers' helmets and found Kanan Jarrus and Captain Rex had come to rescue them.
As Kyra helped the duo sit up, Kanan asked, "What just happened?"
"I didn't realize anyone had gotten my distress signal, so I stunned you, thinking you were coming to back up the other troopers," Kyra admitted, causing Rex to laugh, but he quickly sobered as she continued. "We need to find a way to sabotage the ship. As you know, it features the ability to pull a ship out of hyperspace."
"What's your plan?" Rex asked.
"We need to split up," Kyra said. "I'll take Ezra and Chopper. We'll head to the reactor room while you two find the rest of the crew."
When Kanan argued against splitting up and suggested focusing solely on the crew, Rex argued, "She's right. We have to destroy this ship."
"Do you know how many stormtroopers are heading this way?" Kanan asked.
"It doesn't matter," Rex claimed. "We have to protect the fleet."
"Will you two quit it already?" Ezra yelled as he stomped past the two men. "Part of the reason I took this mission was to get a break from this!"
Since joining forces, Kanan and Rex had fought over how to teach Ezra, whether it was Jedi training versus learning to become a soldier or lightsabers versus blasters.
As the boy stormed off, Kyra said, "We'll meet you at my ship."
She turned on her heel and followed Ezra, hoping the two men would be able to set aside their differences and finish the job. They boarded a turbolift, Ezra holding onto the side of Chopper as they exited the lift, concealing himself from the stormtroopers' view. When they reached the reactor core, Chopper informed Ezra and Kyra that he had a plan for destroying the gravity well. Ezra ran onto the elevated walkway and distracted the officers who were working on the core, leading them away from the large machine. Kyra raced over to the main console and Chopper followed close behind, the pair turning off the gravity and causing the Imperials to float through the air.
Ezra used the walls to his advantage and disarmed two of the officers while letting the zero gravity do the rest. Unfortunately, when Chopper turned the gravity back on, Ezra was not hovering over any of the walkways. Kyra reached out to the Force and caught the padawan – who was suspended over the chasm below – and pulled him towards her before setting him on the nearest bridge.
"Thanks," Ezra said breathlessly, the rebels ducking behind the closest console as a trio of stormtroopers ran into the room and opened fire.
Kyra shot down a couple of the troopers and Ezra deflected the blaster bolts with his lightsaber as they ran out of the cavernous room that contained the reactor core.
As they made their way back to Kyra's corvette, Ezra activated his comlink, "Kanan, we're on our way back. Where are you?"
"We've got the crew and are headed for the ship," Kanan answered, the crew meeting halfway as Jarrus and the members of the Phoenix Squadron fought off a group of stormtroopers.
As Ezra informed Kanan that they had successfully sabotaged the reactor, Kyra glanced at the rebels and asked, "Where's Rex?"
When Jarrus did not answer, Kyra turned to Ezra and said, "Get Kanan and the crew to the blockade runner."
When Ezra asked where Kyra was going, she answered, "I've got to save my friend."
Before she could run off, however, Kanan stopped her and stated that he was going with her.
When Kyra started to argue, Kanan said, "It's my fault he was taken, so I'm gonna help get him back. Ezra can get the crew to the ship."
Ezra nodded and set off towards the corvette as the two Jedi went to find the captain.
They entered the bridge just as the admiral was saying, "—discarded and forgotten, like an obsolete piece of field equipment. And no one will know or care."
"We will," Kyra answered as she and Kanan opened fire, quickly shooting down the interrogation droid and the quartet of stormtroopers.
As the admiral ran like the coward he was, Rex chuckled and said, "Wow. Nice to know you care."
"Don't ruin this," Kanan shot back, but Rex only smirked because he and Kyra could hear the amusement in his voice.
Kanan gave his lightsaber to Kyra so she could cover the two men as the Jedi helped the captain back to her ship.
As they rounded several corners and fought off four stormtroopers, Rex stated, "The whole ship's between us and that hangar."
Kanan grabbed his comlink and told Ezra to take off, telling Bridger that they would find an escape pod when the boy protested. The trio quickly found the small vessels, rocketing away from the ship and towards the CR90 corvette a moment later. After the escape pod docked with Phoenix Home, Rex, Kanan, and Kyra raced to the bridge as the Interdictor activated its gravity wells. When the gravity projectors powered up, they pulled the Imperial light cruisers towards the Interdictor instead of the corvette. The light cruisers collided with the Interdictor and the three Imperial ships were destroyed, the rebels cheering as they made the jump to lightspeed. As they made their way back to the fleet, Kyra turned to face Kanan, Rex, and Ezra.
"Gentlemen, my crew and I owe you our gratitude," she said, bowing her head slightly.
"Thank you, Commander," Ezra Bridger replied before turning to Rex and Kanan. "You know, when you two aren't fighting each other, you fight really well together, Jedi and clones. Now I get it."
Kanan rolled his eyes as Rex thanked him and Kyra Kryze-Kenobi for saving his life before awkwardly adding, "Well, I guess there's nothing more to say about it."
As Rex started to walk away, Kanan Jarrus stopped him and saluted the clone. Captain Rex smiled and returned the salute, the two men finally beginning to put the past behind them.
