Chapter Fifthteen
I fall through the realm door that split both of our worlds from one another, my hands burning as they come into contact with what feels like solid concrete. I groan, coughing from the harsh impact to my chest. The air around me feels hot and dry. I open my eyes to see where I am. I couldn't see a single thing; it was like someone was flashing thousands of flashlights directly into my eyes.
All I want to do is go back. I start moving backwards but nothing happens. I'm still in the human realm. Everything about is overwhelming. The sound of cars coming from every direction and the voices of people in the far distance. I cover my ears, taking deep breaths just to block out some of the noise.
Something squeaks under my cloak, and I feel movement. Still keeping my head down to the ground and away from the sun, I lift my cloak. I blink a few times, trying to adjust my gaze to the strong light. A bat is clinging to my hip, its sharp nails clinging to my clothes. Trying to get a better look I move my head to the side and the sunlight streams into its eyes, it hisses clinging to me even tighter.
Did it follow me to this realm? Bats from the vampire realm can't stand the sun and the brightness of it and neither can vampires. It's probably even worse for the bat than it is for me. I'm part human. Although we are both creatures of the night. I might adjust to the sun, but it probably never will.
I quickly cover it again, closing my cloak over it to protect it from the sun. With a struggle I manage to stand up from the concrete. I've never experienced temperatures this hot before. It feels like I might melt. Do humans really live like this?
Repeatedly opening and closing my eyes to adjust to the sunlight I manage to take a look around me. I'm in the middle of a large concrete lay out with a few cars parked around me and a bit farther away stood multiple buildings.
I search for a place that can protect me from the heat and that's when I see a big tree a few steps ahead. I go towards it, dragging my weak legs over the concrete like a snail and gasping for air on my way to the tree. When I'm finally under the tree let out a loud sigh, feeling much cooler.
This realm is so different from ours. I don't think I can do this. How am I supposed to stay here?
I flop down on the grass, resting my body as I try to calm my rapid breathing. Small movements under my cloak reminds me of the creature still clinging to my hip and how it followed me here. The heat makes my brain all foggy. I almost totally forgot about it. I open my cloak once again, looking at it. Its little body moves up and down as it breathes heavily. It doesn't move again for a couple of minutes, making me worried.
"Please don't attack me." I whisper to myself and gently scoop it up and place it on my lap. Now that I picked it up, I could feel how limp it's body was in my hands. Its body was warm to the touch and the hair on its body soft.
It shouldn't be this warm. Is it dying from the heat?
I'll need to cool it down somehow. I look around anxiously when I spot an old man standing near a stand that has a bit of shade, like he was selling something. I gently pick up the bat and carry it all the way towards the man on the other side. On my way to his stand, I catch people or rather humans eyeing me suspiciously up and down. I soon realized it's because I was wearing a cloak in this heat. Not that I blame them, I'm sweating my butt of in this cloak, but I can't remove it, it was still protecting me from the sun.
I place the bat in one hand, holding it against my chest. I'm going to need to ask the man for a bit of water. Surely he'll help an animal right?
I pull down my hood from my head, not wanting to look even more suspicious. Seeing that no one was buying from him at the moment I approach him cautiously. He looks up from his phone, smiling but then it fades when he looks down at my cloak.
"What's with the cloak? Please don't tell me you worship the devil.?" He asks, his voice rough and grumpy.
"No. I'm not." I say slowly. Why does he think I'm worshipping the devil? Could it be because of the black hair, cloak and nails? The human calls this gothic apparently,
"Thank you, Jesus." He says in relief and raise his hands, looking up to the sky.
When he makes eye contact with me, I look behind him at the cooler box. "I need water." I tell him. He nods, turning around to open the cooler box and pulls out a bottle of water, putting it on the surface in front of me.
"Two dollars." He says.
"I don't have any money." I say softly but before he can take the water back I show him the bat.
"Please. It's not for me. This animal is overheating."
"You want to save a creature like that?" he asks, making a face of disgust. "Don't you know how many diseases they carry?"
"Diseases?" my eyes widen. I didn't even know that was possible at least not for the bats in our realm. I glance down at the poor bat. It followed me to this place and the least I can do is save it from dying.
"Nasty ones. And you're touching it bare handed too."
"Even if what you saying is true. No one deserves to die like this." I look back at the old man. "I just need a little bit of water. Enough to cool it down." I plead. I jump slightly when I feel the bat sinking its small and very sharp teeth into my palm. I quickly compose myself so the man can give me the water bottle.
"If you insist." he slides the bottle towards me, and I thank him. Walking away from the old man the bat licks my palm, almost like it was apologizing for hurting me. Maybe it bit me because it was scared? I quickly walk back to the tree with the bat in one palm and the bottle of water in the other.
I sit down on the grass, placing the bat back onto my lap and remove the lid from the bottle. For some reason it looks a bit better than before. Nether less it was still suffering from the heat. I pour water into the bottle cap and dip my finger in and drop some droplets onto the bat. Softly rubbing the water into its fur so that it could penetrate the skin and help cool it down. When its body is wet enough, I close the bottle of water and put it down next to me.
I would've been panicking on my own but since this bat is here with me and knowing it's also from the vampire realm, I'm calmer than I'm supposed to be. I lean back, resting my back against the rough tree watching my surroundings. I'll be able to think more clearly when the sun goes down, hopefully there'll be less humans too. I don't know enough about this realm to walk around freely. Although I do know that we have a lot of stuff similar to theirs. But there was still a huge difference.

The bat opens its eyes, and I recognize them. Those red eyes have been following me around since I've arrived at the academy.
"You're the one that's been following me." I lift it up gazing down at it and frown. Why am I'm talking to it as if it'll respond? It's an animal, it can't even talk.
Lowering the bat again I look up at the sky. It's almost completely dark now and the sun is going down quickly. Carrying the bat in both hands, I stand up and start walking. I don't know where I am, I hope we don't get lost. This world is bigger than ours.
The wind blows my hair messy and out of my face, it's a nice feeling after today's heat. I inhale the fresh air as I take a deep breath, welcoming the darkness with open arms. A few cars are still on the roads and seeing humans walking in streets were mostly scarce. All of them are probably at home, cuddled up into their warm beds. Something I wish I could do, I want to sleep so badly and my body is at its last bit of strength. I walk down the sidewalk, passing unknown buildings while hiding the bat under my cloak.
An odd building catches my attention and I stop at its entrance. Its windows are broken out and no lights were on. Most of the walls are also broken down and the place is basically falling apart. It looks abandoned. I guess I could stay here for tonight.
I walk in, watching my steps carefully. It was cold, but not colder than what I'm used to. I scan the inside of the building, making sure no one was in here but me and look for something to sleep on.
I find an old mattress in the corner and kick of the dirt, before sitting down. It was a little bit hard, but I couldn't do anything about it right now. I'll just have to use it.
I place the bat down next to me and lay down in a comfortable position. I scoot the bat closer to me so that its placed against my stomach for both heat and protection. It cuddles against me making me smile.
I would've never in a million years thought that I'd end up running away and to the human realm, cuddling with a bat, who's been stalking me the last couple of days. But the part where they send me here alone wasn't as shocking. They don't care about me and never have.
"Please don't fly away during the night and leave me here all alone." I whisper to the bat before falling asleep. I really don't want to be alone again.
