Epilogue -- And It's Not That She Touched Another Celestial Being

In his office on the sixty-sixth floor of the ivory tower, Raguel places a little marble onto the right plate of his scale. It proves one pebble too many and all the round stones spill onto his desk.

Crap.

The scales didn't tip in his favor. They never do.

Getting up from his chair, he walks over to the window and lets his gaze roam over the heavens. Puffy clouds as far as the eye can see, a bright sun that reflects off the steel and chrome, laughter from every corner. He used to enjoy standing here to watch the other angels play catch in the gardens below, only jealous on the rare occasion that as Angel of Justice, he is expected to do actual work. Now it doesn't matter anymore.

Nothing matters.

His job has become a dreadful chore, his mind spinning in a constant loop that circles around one person. A human, who has turned into the center of his existence. He aches for her, but she is out of his reach. A fact that has turned his insides into a permanent knot.

She is down there, in hell, with two other males. They get all her attention.

It makes him sick with envy.

With a long sigh, he returns to his desk and gathers his pebbles.

Best to try again.

Maybe the outcome will be different, with the scales tipping in his favor just once.

Dropping the first marble into the bowl on the left of his scales, he mutters, "She loves me." He places a different colored stone onto the plate on the right. "She loves me not."

He pauses.

What does love even mean?

Levinia's explanation during the last council meeting was awfully vague.

We are still investigating.

They always say that. Just like they claimed that Cassandra Wallace was no threat to them.

It's not that she touched another celestial being.

Of course, it slipped everyone's mind that he was sent down there to take Cass to Nicoletta. That he carried her in his arms and almost broke apart when he had to leave her. But no news there. No one has ever cared about him.

Everything is always about Lou and Anchor.

The Creator's favorite sons.

Raguel sighs again and places a couple of marbles in the left bowl. "She loves me." More pebbles are added to the right. "She loves me not."

Another marble.

"She loves me."

And another.

"She loves me not."

"She loves me."

"She loves me not."

And the stones spill once again onto the table.
