1.5 Normal Routine

                                                                             5:30 Am

After finishing in the bathroom, I quickly shower and start working on my hair. Walking out of the bathroom, I notice several things on my bed - books, notebooks, pens, pencils, and a note. It annoys me how she always manages to do that as if she has some magical power. However, I know better. Since she is a vampire, she can move without making any sound. I walk towards the bed and pick up the note:

Your locker number is 754. You have time between classes to get the book for each class and keep the rest in your locker. You brought you more clothes, makeup, and essentials.

Good luck on your first day.

Elena HeadMistress,

As I am getting ready for school, I discovered some fresh clothes and new jeans in my closet. I opted for a skinny blue pair of jeans, a white tank top, and my mom's leather jacket. Although I had plenty of shoes, I decided to wear my lucky boots. After collecting all my books, notebooks, pencils, pens, and the school map, I headed toward my locker. While walking towards my locker, I was distracted by a buzzing noise that I soon realized was coming from the area where vampires and humans were waiting. Humans were allowed to enter the room freely, but vampires had to wait in line. Curious, I walked straight in without waiting in line. As I entered the room, a girl seated by the desk handed me a paper without looking up.

Cubicle 3

I was walking towards my cubicle when I suddenly heard a whisper, "Which cubicle are you going to be in?" Startled, I jumped and let out a shriek. Turning around, I saw Leopold standing behind me, looking amused. I tightly clutched my books to my chest. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," he said. He briefly laid his eyes on me before turning towards the cubicles and then back to me. "You are donating blood, right?"

As soon as I read the paper, I crumple it and throw it in the trash. Leopold follows me towards my locker and says, "No need to worry; we don't take blood by force. It's one of the annoying rules this school has. Humans have to volunteer their blood."

I stop and turn to look at him. "So what was yesterday?"

"I was asking for your blood," he responds.

"So, if I would have said yes?" I ask, leaning in closer to Leopold to hear his answer.

Leopold crowds me, and I retreat with every step he takes to shorten the distance between us.

"I would have tasted your blood," Leo says, roaming my body again in a way that should be illegal.

I turn around and stare at my locker, wondering about security-like locks.

"No need for locks. No one in the school is stupid enough to break the rules."

"Glad to know that this vampire school has standards," I murmur, putting my stuff inside except for the ones for my first class; then I close the locker and walk towards the cafeteria.

"Oh, come on! Vampires are not the salvages you believe us to be."

"Sure,"

I wait in line for food. I pick light food, while Leopold selects blood.

"There are human serial killers; would that make you hate humans as well?" Leopold says, keeping up his steps with me.

I sit down and eat breakfast while Leopold sits beside me, drinking his blood.

"So. What classes do you have?" He says, looking into my stuff.

"The classes the headmistress gave me looked like high school classes. Which I'm sure you don't have-"

Leo snatched the paper from my book so quickly that I couldn't stop him from checking what it was. "Huh. You're right," he said while I was munching on my food. I rolled my eyes at him, stood up, and carried the tray straight to one of my classes. "It's a good thing I'm not enrolled in any classes. I can come and go as I please."

"I'll walk you to class."

"No, thank you," I say, hands towards Leopold, expecting to have my books back.

Leopold was ignoring me and instead started walking. I couldn't help but let out a groan and followed him, feeling defeated. Just as Leo was about to open the door to my first class, Eon beat him to it and held it open. Leopold glared at Eon so intensely that it made Eon's smirk disappear instantly. I entered the classroom and took my seat. Leopold placed my books on the desk and sat beside me while Eon sat on the other.

This will be interesting.

The classroom fell silent as the teacher walked in promptly at eight-thirty. He had short, dark brown hair and light blue eyes and was dressed in a suit. "Please turn in your papers," he said in a monotone voice. As I looked around, I couldn't help but notice that the students in this class seemed more human than vampires. Although it was difficult to tell, vampires had learned to appear human, so they wouldn't need to attend this class.

Welcome, Miss Hathaway. I wanted to let you know you're excused from this assignment. Your first task is a 1000-word essay on vampires.

I open my mouth to argue that as I find that suspicious, but then I think better. "Sure,"

"You have a week to turn that in. I will check for spelling errors and how well-composed your papers are. You have one week to turn that paper in."

My mouth falls open. One week?

Leopold leans into me as he whispers. "I can write that paper for you if you like-"

"No," I murmur.

The class continued as the teacher reviewed ways to write proper English and gave us some free time to work on our papers. Eventually, Leopold got bored with me ignoring him and stood up and walked out of the class.

Math was even worse than English, not because of Leopold or Eon. Humans and the vampire teacher were horrible to me. By the time the class ends, I have a headache and am in a foul mood.

Thankfully, I have an hour-and-a-half break for lunch to calm down before my next class. I walk to the cafeteria and grab a sandwich and a can of soda. I only have my notebook as I start to write what I know about vampires while eating.

When noon comes, I head towards the lockers, put my notebooks there, and then head to class.

My next class is swimming class, which reminds me that I forgot to bring the bag with a bathing suit-

"I don't see a changing bag with you, Miss Hathaway."

"Yes, I am sorry I forgot it at my dorm."

This teacher looks like she could be one student. She seems too young to be a teacher, but then again, the fangs on her mouth tell me she is a vampire. She has blonde hair pulled into a neat bund and light brown eyes that would confuse her as a human.

"This is a rigorous school, Miss Hathaway. I'll excuse you today, but the next time this happens, you'll be sent to the office, then expelled from this class, possibly the school."

"I understand. It will not happen again."

"Make sure you don't," she waves her hands at me, and I walk towards a bench no one uses.

He watched humans and vampires jumping into the water and doing advanced techniques. Eon walks in with swim shorts and a bare chest full of muscles and gives me a smile and a wink. You would think he is a pop star for the way the girls swoon at him but give dirty looks at me to get his attention.

I roll my eyes and try not to watch him swim... But it's hard not to. He's good at it. I DON'T NEED TO CHANGE since I didn't get in the water. I go to my locker, grab a book and notebook, and head to vampire history class, following the map.

The desks in these classrooms are all marked with exquisite, neatly written names. I am early, so I walk around reading the names. Two desks caught my attention.

Isabella Hathaway

I trace a finger around my name, then look at the other writing of a name next to me.

Leopold Zach.

Eventually, class starts, and human and vampire students enter the class. The last person to enter is the teacher. I stare at the teacher with a frown. The guy looks to be about sixty years old. The guy has long white hair; he has washed-out blue eyes. The human teacher is wearing a black two-piece wool suit. I stare open my mouth at the guy in front of me, wondering why a human would volunteer to teach history about vampires.

The teacher starts talking. "This school was founded in the fourteen hundreds. First, it was only for vampires, as obviously, they couldn't let humans in. Eventually, thanks to this school and all the studying and testing done here. Vampires found a cure for the sun and then learned to enjoy human food. Eventually, humans were invited to apply, but of course, at the cost of tests and interviews; after all, vampires are still a secret that needs to be kept. Of course, when humans started to attend school, things did not run smooth-"

A vampire raised his hand and stared at me with a smirk. "We learn this on the first day of school. Why are you repeating it?"

"Go to the office, Mister Thompson. You know exactly why-"

The vampire stands up fast, almost blurring, and hisss at the teacher, suggesting he is about to attack the teacher.

"If you send me to the office, it will conflict with my feeding schedule. I will have to wait till school is over!"

"Not my problem. You should have known better."

"The student hisses and storms out."

The teacher continues with the lesson. "There were casualties on the human's side; vampires couldn't control their hunger; vampires traveling would stop and kill one or two humans, then go on their way. It wasn't until 1672 that the rule about feeding without a human's consent was created. Isabella, do you know why a vampire would create a rule about biting a human without human approval?"

"I'm guessing whatever happened in 1672 was big?"

"Exactly, there were twenty humans that two vampires killed. After such a massacre, the rule was made. If we let vampires do those types of feeding, it won't take long before humans find out about the immortals."

"And I'm guessing that's bad because it would create hunters, right?" I say, interrupting the teacher.

The teacher gave me a stern look and was about to reprimand me when the bell rang. Everyone got up to leave, and I also started gathering my things. However, before I could go, the teacher spoke up again.

"Miss Hathaway, a word."

I clutched onto my book and notebook and walked up to the teacher. "Yes?" I asked.

"You do know that every vampire in this school knows who your parents were, right?" Before I could respond, he continued speaking. "Your parents were not only hunters but famous ones at that. Everyone in this school knows your story." I frowned; this was news to me. The teacher then warned me, "You cannot talk about joining the slayers in front of anyone. I will have to send you to the office, but I will explain that you spoke out of turn. Let's hope that none of the vampire students open their mouths."

"If every vampire knows why I am here-"

"No... They know who you are. As far as why you are here, it is because you feel vampires own you for what one of their kind did to your parents."

Ah.

"Do you know who killed my parents?" I put both hands on his desk-

"I'm sorry, but even if I had information about your parents, it wouldn't be safe to share it with you. It might be better for you to move on and start a new life here. Please get your belongings and leave the school for good. It's best to focus on your future and not dwell on the past.

"No. You are right. Vampires own me all this luxury-" I lie, walking towards the headmistress's office.

As soon as I opened the door, the headmistress spoke. "Miss Hathaway. Do you need a day to learn the rules of this school?"

"No. I am a fast learner."

"Did you notice the kid that came before you know will not eat until the end of the day-"

"Yes."

"What do you think it would mean for a human?" I shrug. "Your punishment would be an hour of donating blood."

"You can't-"

"Force you? You are right, meaning you would be expelled and escorted out of the premises."

"Are you telling me I have to leave?"

"No. I'm telling you, next time you are sent to my office; you will have a choice to make."

"Since you know how I feel about feeding a vampire, it would mean expulsion-"

"Exactly. You better be a model student from now on."

With that, I walk out with annoyance. I am heading towards my dorm room without considering dinner when a building gets my attention.
