Backstory
Childhood
James and him had a very pleasant childhood. They were actually very close and were sort of joined at the hip per say. They usually very much enjoyed the woods and staying out there. That stuck with him.

Hogwarts experience
This was the start of something for sure. Through first year Atticus stuck with James and the rest of the marauders. Then the next year rolled around and Atticus couldn't condone Sirius and James's actions towards Severus. Therefore, he took Severus's side. Sticking by him through and through. That also got him quite close with Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Black. This all caused a serious divide with James. He kept a close relationship with Remus just so he knew James was okay.

After Hogwarts
After Hogwarts, Atticus moved in with Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy. James and him still weren't talking and he didn't really have anywhere to go. Not to mention, he came out shortly after graduation. All his Slytherin friends were surprisingly understanding. Everyone else quite confused.
It was meant to be very temporary only a couple of months. That was until the death of James and Lily. He knew he was the god parent to Harry through Lily telling him once but he honestly couldn't. There was too much grief there and he didn't feel fit enough to take on that role. He assumed Sirius would handle it.
He ended up staying at the Malfoy Manor until Draco was 5. Draco and him were very close and they had a bunch of fun together. It hurt for him to leave but he just had to. He had to take a couple years reinvent himself. He got his top surgery, went on hormones, got some tattoos, and had some great vacations. Although, he liked living in the muggle world he knew he couldn't stay. He soon made his way back and got a job as a healer.
He climbed the ladder and soon become top healer at St. Mungos. He didn't reappear to anybody until Harry's fourth school year. He took an apprenticeship in the Hospital wing at Hogwarts. He stayed there until the group graduated before going back to St. Mungos.
Both sides of the war tried in a way to recruit him in a type of way but neither side truly won. As cowardly as it sounded Atticus decided to stay out of the war. Though he can say he was a huge help in the aftermath. At least with helping other recover from PTSD of it.

"I'm only here for the rest of your school years. If you'd stop getting hurt you wouldn't have to see me."
