Angel

There has to be some kind of pattern to this. On the third floor, above the Main Floor and Training Floor, is our Planning Floor. On one wall, we have a massive map of the country and places Anaya has attacked. But it seems so... erratic. Like there is no method to it at all. First, it was a small neighborhood on the outer Uscain, then a street on the other side of the country in Etrya.

There are sixteen main counties, including the Center. But scattered throughout those counties are several small neighborhoods with their own, unofficial name. If the Rulers knew that country wide, there were names besides those sixteen named? Oof, let's just say no one would be happy and many would be punished if not all.

Anaya had attacked Uscain, then Etrya, then a street on the borders of Snuele and Estria. What is her pattern here? Is it meant to be so erratic? Or is there an underlying pattern that is indistinguishable? The big question is, does she have an end goal or is her main purpose to cause chaos? My hope is to figure that out before this entire country is destroyed.

"Make any progress?" Mich asks, coming through the hatch in the floor.

Not taking my eyes off the wall, I answer her. "No, I can't seem to find any pattern to the attacks."

"You do know that you don't have to figure it out alone right? It isn't your sole purpose to figure it all out or prove yourself."

"What gave you the idea that I was trying to prove myself?" I ask, finally looking at her.

She raises an eyebrow before bursting out laughing. " 'What gave you the idea I was trying to prove myself?' Good one, really."

"No, I'm serious."

Mich does a double take. "Angel, we all know how your childhood was. How you always had to go the extra mile just to get the same opportunities as those in one category. But you need to remember that I was the one who chose YOU. You don't need to go the extra mile with us."

"How the heck do you always know what's in people's heads?" I ask, astonished.

"Um, because that's my power?"

"Right, that's totally not it," I say, letting the sarcasm pour out. Glancing back at the map, I get an idea. "What if..." Walking up to the wall, I connect the places in the order of attack, forming a lopsided triangle.

"Think it means anything?" Mich asks.

"I have no clue but, it's a start. We can redraw with each new attack."

"We? Last I knew, you were the one with the light powers."

I roll my eyes, " I meant redrawing it with our respective powers. Maybe with the more attacks it'll give us more of an idea of her pattern."

"It's a good idea. C'mon let's go down to the Main Floor, you've been up here for hours."

"Fine. Just give a minute and I'll meet you down there."

She gives me a suspicious look but nods and descends down the hatch. Once she's gone I turn back to the map and stare at it hoping it'll give me more answers. When that doesn't work, I try to rearrange the beam in some other shape. That doesn't work, all I get is a lopsided triangle.

Getting another idea, I raise the beams off the wall making a floating triangle. From there, I dissect it, rearranging the beams themselves. I know it's a long shot but worth a try. But all I get are runes that I learned about in my Wordly History Class back in High School that date back to Earth times. I doubt that Anaya would care about Norse Mythology. Who knows if she even took Worldly Religions and Mythology in High School.

Shaking my head, I give up. Better to leave it alone for a while so I don't drive myself crazy trying to figure this out in one sitting. Taking one last glance, I walk over and open the hatch, seeing Mich left the hatch open for me on the Second Floor, the news from the TV floating all the way up here. Grinning, I listen to the impulsive thoughts and cross my arms dead body style and jump straight down into the Main Corridor.

Bad idea. The impact to my right ankle said no and pain encompasses my entire ankle.

"Was the sprained ankle worth it?" Mich asks, as she turns down the volume on the News, not even bothering to look down the corridor.

"Considering it's sprained and not broken, I'd say yes," I answer as I walk over to the chairs, not even limping. Not the first time I've sprained or broken something and it definitely won't be the last.

"So, what's this plan you have?" Lily asks, barely above a whisper as I flop backwards into my chair. I cock an eyebrow, Lily barely ever speaks. So if she's the one asking, that means they must all be interested. I look over to Mich.

She holds up her hands, palms out in defense. "All I said was that you had an idea to figure out Anaya's pattern. It should be coming fully from you, not me."

Before starting, I push myself up a bit higher on the arm I'm leaning against. "Well, I was thinking we could make a mark with our powers on the map upstairs each time Anaya attacks and then play connect the dots basically. If we do that, we may figure out her pattern and be able to anticipate her next move."

"That's... A really good idea. Why didn't we come up with it earlier?" Hailey says.

"Maybe because none of you were up there for several hours at a time just staring at the wall?" I laugh.

"Duh, just staring at a wall is boring," Jasper finally pipes in.

"Oh, he finally speaks! I wasn't even sure you were listening!" Hailey snickers.

"Oh ha-ha Hailey, yes I listen. Just not to you."

"And how well has that worked out for you in the past?" Hailey smirks, "Remember what happened in Ofrus?"

"How many times do I have to tell you? It was not my fault that dude thought I was the target," Jasper combats, leaning back in the traditional "not my fault" pose.

"If I remember correctly, I told you not to wear the outfit you were wearing that morning specifically because you looked like his target."

Jasper turns away and lifts his chin, "You did not say that at all."

"Oh my Rulers," Hailey chortles, "You are insufferable."

"Shhh, the both of you and listen," Lily interjects above a whisper for once. She grabs the remote and turns up the volume.

"We have just got word that an Agent that went undercover has returned home. Sources say that he is in physical perfection but seems to be in the middle of some kind of psychological break. We reached out to the Director for an insight but were kicked out the second we entered the facility. We will keep you updated when more information is uncovered," The News Anchorman finishes and the screen switches back over to the regular News.

Lily turns the volume back down as we all stare at each other.

"You don't think he was..." Hailey trails off.

"That's not possible, BNR wouldn't let something like that out in the public."

"Unless there was a leak in the Agency," Jasper comments.

"Oh don't be naive," Hailey chides, " The BNR is too top-secret to allow a leak."

"Hailey is right, there wouldn't be a leak in the Agency, so it had to have gotten out beforehand," Mich says.

I'm about to say something myself when there's banging down at the base of the tower. When this tower was first built as a hideout, there were microphones and cameras embedded into the walls on the outside and inside. Mich grabs the remote from Lily and presses a button, showing the feed from the cameras. There, standing at the base, is an Agent banging as loud as she can.

"I know you can hear me, and I'm not leaving until we talk!" She yells.
