[ Chapter Nineteen ]

[Chapter Eight: The Upside Down]

The teens went inside after a couple minutes of standing on the porch.

Nancy and Jonathan went to the kitchen to make something to eat and waste time while they waited for news and Steve sat down on the couch. Beth was so exhausted that the second she got inside she collapsed onto the couch next to Steve. She curled her feet under her and leaned her head back.

"Are you okay, Byers?" Steve asked.

Beth sighed and turned her head slightly to stare at him, "Not really." She swallowed, "How are you doing? I mean with everything?"

Steve laughed, "You're seriously asking me that?"

Beth smiled and raised an eyebrow at him, "Well?"

"Honestly I'm kinda glad that this is what all of you were doing. Instead of-" Steve said.

Beth swallowed, "You mean instead of Nancy and Jonathan hooking up, don't you?"

Steve nodded.

"Don't worry. I think you coming back has definitely given you points." Beth gave him a small smile.

Steve laughed a little, "And to answer your question honestly, I don't really understand what's going on."

"Neither do I." Beth admitted.

"Well you were pretty great." Steve said.

"A compliment, from Steve Harrington? I'm so honored" Beth said sarcastically

"Seriously." Steve said.

"Would you believe me if I said that that was one of the first times I've ever used a gun?" Beth asked.

"I mean, you never seemed to be one for sticking to society's expectations." Steve admitted.

"Hah hah." Beth said sarcastically and then thanked him, "Thank you for not listening to us."

Steve laughed, "You're welcome."

Beth didn't know how much time had passed because the next thing she knew, a ringing noise was piercing into her ears and she opened her eyes, squinting at her surroundings.

It was still dark and she realized her head was on someone's shoulder. She sat up and rubbed her eyes, looking to her right to see that it had been Steve who she'd had her head resting on. Jonathan ran into the room and grabbed the phone that Nancy had thrown on the ground.

"Hello?" Jonathan asked, and then was silent for a minute before turning to stare at Beth who was still trying to wake up.

Beth sat up and stared at her brother, "What's going on?"

"Okay, we're coming." Jonathan said before hanging up the phone.

"Jon?" Beth asked.

"They found Will." Jonathan said.

Beth's eyes widened and she immediately felt awake as she leapt up from the couch and grabbed her jacket, "Where are they?"

"They just got to the hospital." Jonathan answered, putting on his own jacket.

"What about the boys?" Beth asked.

"Actually the EMTs and police are already there." Jonathan answered.

"Shit." Beth cursed.

"Are they okay?" Nancy asked as she came into the room.

"I'm not sure." Jonathan said.

"I can take you to the school if you want." Steve offered.

Nancy shook her head, "I'm just going to call my parents really quick and then we can go to the hospital."

Nancy went over to the phone and dialed her parents number. When she didn't say anything, Beth knew that they must not have picked up the phone.

"Nance you should go." Beth told her.

"No. They're probably at the school. I can try them again from the hospital." Nancy said.

"Beth we need to go." Jonathan told her as he grabbed his keys and ran outside.

"You guys coming?" Beth asked Steve and Nancy who grabbed their stuff and followed them.

Steve ended up leaving his car at the Byers' house and driving with the others to the hospital. Beth wasn't sure why he was tagging along but she didn't say anything

The second they got to the hospital, Beth practically ran through the doors and to the reception desk, to ask what room her brother was in. Her brother came running in close behind her and once the two got the information on their brother, they left Nancy and Steve behind and raced upstairs.

The two knocked on the door of the hospital room and when Joyce opened it, she immediately grabbed the two twins in her arms.

"Thank God you're alright." Joyce cried.

"Yeah we're fine mom." Beth said, but was crying.

"Is he okay?" Jonathan asked, as he pulled away from their mother's embrace and looked at Will who was lying on the hospital bed connected to the machines.

Joyce sighed and let go of Jonathan and Beth, "I think we got to him just in time."

Joyce suddenly grabbed Beth and Jonathan's hands which were bandaged up, "What did you two do?"

"It's nothing mom." Jonathan promised.

"You did something that I told you not to do, didn't you?" Joyce asked.

"You really thought we were going to just sit around and wait?" Beth asked.

Joyce laughed, "Honestly, no."

Jonathan set something down on the floor in the room, and Beth noticed that he had actually brought a box of things for Will. Beth had been so preoccupied that she hadn't even noticed.

"When's he going to wake up?" Beth asked, sitting down in one of the empty chairs.

"I don't know." Joyce admitted, "But he's going to be fine."

Jonathan and Joyce sat down next to Beth who curled her knees up in the chair to wait.

The monitor beeped softly as Will opened his eyes.

"Hey." Joyce, Jonathan and Beth said together as they looked at him.

"Where...where am I?" Will asked them.

"You're home. You're home now." Beth said, smiling at her little brother.

"You're safe." Jonathan added.

"Jonathan." Will looked at him first and then shifted his eyes to Beth, "Beth."

"Yeah. It's me, buddy." Jonathan smiled, tears falling down his cheeks

Beth smiled, "We missed you. We really missed you."

"Are you okay?" Will asked, looking at the twins bandaged hands.

"What, this?" Jonathan asked, holding up his hand and then looking at Beth, "It's just a cut."

"It's nothing, really." Beth laughed.

"You're worried about our hands." Jonathan laughed, exchanging looks with Joyce and Beth.

Joyce stroked Will's hair as they all laughed softly.

"Oh hey we uh brought you some stuff, so you don't get bored here." Jonathan said, picking the basket up from the floor, "Uh, I made you a new mixtape. There's some stuff on there I think you really might like."

Jonathan handed the tape to Will and they were all quiet for a minute.

"Hey, um, are you up for some visitors?" Joyce asked, Will.

Will looked confused, but nodded.

"Jonathan, Beth could you go get them?" Joyce asked them.

Beth nodded and smiled at her brother, "We'll be right back, okay?"

Will nodded.

Beth grabbed Jonathan and pulled him out of the room and towards the waiting room where everyone was waiting. The two twins only had to knock and peek their heads in before Mike, Lucas and Dustin were up out of their seats and running towards Will's room.

Beth sighed and stood in the doorway a little awkwardly before speaking, "I'll be right there, Jon."

Jonathan nodded as he followed closely behind the boys.

Nancy came forward and wrapped her arms around Beth.

"It's over." Beth cried, "It's finally over."
