[ Chapter Eighteen ]
❝It's okay, Jon. Not everyone can be a gunslinger.❞
[Chapter Eight: The Upside Down]
>> >> >>
The three teens snuck into the police station and grabbed their confiscated items. Beth knew there would probably be consequences once this was all over but right now all she could think about was that one of her best friend's was killed by a creature from another world and her little brother was currently being held in that horrible place.
Beth did worry about the kids who they had left behind but Jonathan was sure they would be okay by themselves and the three of them grabbed the things from the trunk before hurrying inside.
The first thing they did was screw back on all of the Christmas lights that someone, Beth guessed Hopper, had unscrewed and tossed aside. Then Jonathan nailed the trap into the floor in the hallway. None of them were sure what they would do about the trap later, but right now it didn't seem to matter.
Nancy handed Beth a gun and Beth took it. If you had asked either girl if they'd thought they would know how to shoot a gun and would be using one to kill monsters even two weeks ago, both of their answers would have been no.
Beth loaded the bullets in her gun before twirling it in one hand and slipping it into her belt.
"Do we have to pour gasoline all over the carpet?" Beth asked, as Nancy grabbed the gasoline they'd bought.
"Do you want to kill it, or not?" Nancy asked, an eyebrow raised.
Beth sighed and nodded, "Of course I want to kill it, Nance."
"Then yes, we have to pour gasoline on the carpet." Nancy answered and then at Beth's concerned look she added, "Don't worry, I'm sure your mom won't mind if we ruin the carpet by killing the monster who took your brother."
Beth gave a small smile at that, "I'll go see how Jonathan is doing."
Beth left Nancy to pour the gasoline as she walked into her brother's room where Jonathan was pounding nails into a bat.
"Don't want me to teach you how to use one of these?" Beth asked, grabbing the gun from her belt and twirling it around slightly.
Jonathan stopped for a minute and looked up at his sister, rolling his eyes, "No."
Beth laughed softly, "It's okay, Jon. Not everyone can be a gunslinger."
"You've literally just learned how to fire a gun. And no one likes a bragger, B." Jonathan told her.
Beth smiled at her brother and then sobered, "Do you really think this will work?"
Jonathan paused as if considering the question and then admitted, "No."
Beth raised an eyebrow.
"I mean, I don't know. But we have to try, right?" Jonathan added.
"I just don't want us getting into a situation we can't get out of." Beth said.
"We'll get out of it." Jonathan promised her, "I promise."

Once everything was set up, the three teens stood in the living room. Jonathan gave both Nancy and Beth knives and got one for himself as well.
"Now, remember." Jonathan started, before looking at Nancy.
"Straight into Will's room." Nancy added.
"And don't step on the trap." Beth said.
"Wait for the yo-yo to move." Nancy added.
"Then-" Jonathan pulled out a lighter and Beth and Nancy nodded, "Alright. You ready?"
Beth looked sideways at Nancy who locked eyes with her before the two girls looked back at Jonathan and nodded, "Ready."
The three of them held the knives to their palms. None of them looked particularly okay with this as they had various expressions of worry on their faces.
"On three." Jonathan said, "One. Two."
At Nancy's frightened face, Jonathan added, "You don't have to do this."
"Jonathan, stop talking." Nancy argued.
"I'm just saying you don't have to-" Jonathan started but didn't finish.
Both Nancy and Beth said simultaneously, "Three," and the three teenagers cut their palms at the same time.
Beth winced as the blood from their cuts dripped onto the carpet beneath them.
Jonathan went and got bandages from a bathroom. The blood on the carpet was now probably enough to lure the monster to them and none of them wanted to lose too much blood. Nancy sat down on the sofa holding her cut hand in her other one but not too close as to stain her clothing. Beth stood up at the other end of the couch and waited for Jonathan to bring the bandages back.
Once Jonathan returned, he carefully wrapped Beth's hand with the bandage, "Is it okay?"
"Yeah." Beth nodded, trying not to wince as he tightened it slightly.
"You winced." Jonathan pointed out.
Beth rolled her eyes, "It's just a little tight, Jon, but it's fine. Don't worry about it."
"Okay." Jonathan said as he taped it down before sitting down on the sofa next to Nancy.
"Um, I'm going to go get some water." Beth said awkwardly before retreating to the kitchen to let her friends have a 'moment'. She figured it was okay since Nancy and Steve had technically 'broke up' but she knew that they probably still had some sort of feelings for each other, though she didn't really know.
Nancy and Beth hadn't really had much time to actually talk because of all this and Beth missed her best friend. Beth promised herself that if they got through this, she was going to do just that.

Beth was barely in the kitchen for ten minutes and had just started her second cup of water, when a loud pounding at the door startled the three.
Beth went back to the living room in time to see Nancy talking to someone at the door. Beth raised an eyebrow to look at Jonathan, "What's going on?"
Suddenly Nancy was pushed aside by the person at the door who was revealed to be Steve.
"Steve. No." Nancy stammered and looked at Beth and Jonathan for help.
Steve was looking around the room in confusion, "What is-What's going on?"
"You need to get out of here." Jonathan came froward pushing Steve slightly to the door, "Listen man, I'm not asking you."
Beth came out of her shock, "Steve, please. You have to leave."
"What's that smell? Is that gasoline?" Steve asked.
Nancy pulled her gun out and pointed it at Steve, "Steve. Get out."
"Nance." Beth said softly, "What are you doing?"
"Wait. What is going on?" Steve asked.
"You have five seconds to get out of here." Nancy said.
"Okay, is this a joke? Stop. Put the gun down." Steve pleaded.
"I'm doing this for you." Nancy repeated.
Suddenly the lights flashed and Beth and Jonathan looked at each other.
"Nancy." Jonathan tried to get her attention.
"Three. Two." Nancy counted.
"No, no, no! No." Steve pleaded.
"Nancy stop!" Beth said stepping in front of Steve, "Nancy, the lights!"
"It's here." Jonathan said and grabbed the bat from the table.
"Wait, what's here?" Steve asked.
Nancy and Jonathan immediately moved back to back and Beth pulled out her gun looking apologetically at Steve.
"Where is it?" Nancy asked, frantically.
"I don't know. I don't see it." Jonathan answered, "Beth, what are you doing?"
"Hello? Will someone please explain to me what the hell is going-" Steve was cut off as the ceiling caved in.
All four teens turned to the corner where the monster was trying to get in and Nancy started shooting at it.
"No. Go! Go! Run!" Jonathan yelled at them as he grabbed Nancy's waist to turn her around, before he grabbed Steve's hand pulling him as well. Steve momentarily recovered from his shock to wrap his fingers around Beth's wrist and pull her away before she could start shooting at the monster as well.
"Shit." Beth cursed as they all leaped over the trap in the hallway and ran into a room and slammed the doors shut.
"What the hell was that?" Steve asked, "What the hell was that?"
"Shut up." Nancy, Jonathan and Beth said simultaneously.
All of them turned to the door.
"What's it doing?" Nancy asked.
"I don't know." Jonathan shook his head, as he held out the lighter.
Suddenly everything went silent and all any of them could hear was the sound of their breath.
"Do you hear anything?" Beth asked.
"No." Jonathan shook his head.
Beth stepped forward and opened the door slowly, still holding out her gun, before she stepped out and the others followed behind her, to see an empty hallway. Beth motioned the others forward as she crept through the hallway and back into the living room. There was no sign of the monster anywhere.
Steve was clearly losing it as he mumbled in the background, "This is crazy. This is crazy. This is crazy."
He ran over to the phone and immediately grabbed it before dialing something but Nancy ran over and threw the phone across the room.
"What are you doing? Are you insane?" Steve asked.
"It's going to come back. So you need to leave." Nancy told him, "Right now."
Steve looked confusedly between all of the teenagers before listening to them and leaving.
"Nance. He was trying." Beth said as soon as the door shut.
"I know-" Nancy started but then the lights flickered again.
The three teens immediately stood in a circle, looking for the monster.
"Where is it?" Beth asked frantically.
"Come on you son of a bitch." Jonathan cursed.
"Come on!" Nancy yelled.
The lights shut off.
"Shit" Beth murmured looking around for the monster.
Nancy suddenly turned around and screamed, "Jonathan!"
Beth whipped her head around to see the monster standing behind Jonathan but it was too late. As soon as Jonathan recovered and held up his bat, the monster pushed him to the ground.
"JONATHAN!" Beth screamed at her brother, she pulled out her gun, and shot it several times until Nancy started shooting at it.
"Go to hell you son of a bitch." Nancy cursed as she shot at the monster, but this only seemed to make it mad as it turned towards Nancy and Beth.
The two girls shot at it simultaneously but it wasn't long until the two ran out of bullets and Beth knew there wasn't enough time to reload. Beth and Nancy shared a panicked look as the monster advanced towards them, until Steve appeared out of nowhere, hitting the monster with the baseball bat
"Steve!" Nancy said in semi-shock.
The monster pushed Steve but he twirled the bat in his hand before hitting it several times until it backed up and got stuck in the trap.
"He's in the trap. He's stuck!" Steve yelled over at them.
Nancy and Beth recovered from their shock and Beth helped her brother off the floor.
"Jonathan, now!" Nancy yelled at him.
Jonathan pulled the lighter out before lighting it and tossing it in the air towards the monster. It landed on the gasoline and lit up the entire hallway, causing the monster to burst into flames.
The three held up their hands against the light before Jonathan ran and grabbed the fire extinguisher.
"Get back! Everyone get back!" Jonathan yelled as he sprayed the hallway with the fire extinguisher.
Everyone coughed as the steam and smoke raised up filling their senses, and when everything cleared, they all stared at the space where the monster had been, only to see that it wasn't there anymore.
Beth's eyes widened and she looked over at Jonathan, "Where'd it go?"
"No. It has to be dead." Jonathan muttered, "It has to be."
The lights which had previously all been out suddenly started coming back on. They all exchanged glances before walking back towards the living room.
Beth and Jonathan looked at each other as the lights came back on there too.
"Mom?" Beth choked out the word.
"Mom, is that you?" Jonathan asked.
Silence echoed back at them as there was no answer.
Beth tilted her head slightly as she saw a flickering light outside through the window, and she opened the front door before stepping onto the porch. The others followed her questioningly.
"Where's it going?" Nancy asked as she looked at the flickering street light.
"I don't think that's the monster." Jonathan answered, voicing Beth's thoughts.
"What do we do now?" Beth asked.
"We wait." Jonathan answered.
