[Chapter Seven: The Bathtub]

Beth glared at everyone in the police station as she sat next to her brother. The cops hadn't handcuffed her or Nancy but she knew that they were still in trouble.
"I can't believe they didn't get in trouble." Beth complained as she heard one of the officers calling Chief Jim Hopper and asking for her and Jonathan's mom, "Also that was so stupid, Jonathan."
"I couldn't let him get away with saying that stuff about us, Beth." Jonathan said.
"Yeah he's an asshole, what's new?" Beth said.
"You're not in trouble, Beth." Jonathan responded.
Beth rolled her eyes, "Yeah, I'm not in freaking handcuffs but I definitely did contribute to that fight."
Nancy walked over to them, "I never knew you could punch like that, Beth."
Beth shrugged, "Neither did I, honestly."
"It was kind of impressive." Nancy added.
Beth's mouth dropped open, "Nance. I literally punched your boyfriend."
"I don't think he's my boyfriend anymore." Nancy said, quietly.
"Nance." Beth said softly.
"It's fine, Beth. It's not yours or Jonathan's fault." Nancy said.
The three of them were quiet for a few minutes before Beth interrupted.
"I have to tell you both something." Beth said, "Last night I couldn't sleep after Jonathan dropped me off at home, so I kind of went out and ended up at Steve's house."
"What?" Jonathan asked, confused.
"Nothing happened. We went swimming and then I slept in his guest room because he insisted that I shouldn't drive home at 2 in the morning." Beth continued, "I promise, that's all that happened and I would never hurt you Nance."
Nancy nodded, "Don't worry, I trust you."
The door suddenly opened and Joyce and Chief Hopper walked in.
"Hey! Jonathan? Beth? Jesus, what happened?" Joyce walked over to them.
"Ma'am." One of the officers walked over.
"We're fine, Mom." Beth told her.
"Why is he wearing handcuffs?" Joyce asked and looked at Beth, "And why is my daughter here as well?"
"Well, your boy assaulted a police officer. That's why." The officer answered, "And both of the girls were there with him."
"Take the handcuffs off." Joyce said.
"I am afraid I cannot do that." The officer responded.
"Take them off!" Joyce yelled.
"You heard her. Take 'em off." Chief Hopper responded.
"Chief, I get everyone's emotional here, but there's something you need to see." Another officer said.
"Shit. The stuff." Beth hissed to Jonathan.
The Chief and officers went out to Jonathan's car as the others waited inside the station.
"What happened?" Joyce asked them.
"It's nothing." Jonathan responded.
"It's not our fault Mom." Beth added.
Joyce sighed, "I'm not blaming you. I just want to know what happened."
"It's nothing. Someone from school just insulted our family, Mom." Beth said, "Jonathan was just defending us."
Joyce nodded and didn't say anything for right then the Chief returned and dumped the box of their tools on the desk.
"What is all this?" Joyce asked, sorting through the items.
"Why don't you ask your son? We found it in his car." Chief Hopper responded.
"What?" Joyce asked.
"Why are you going through my car?" Jonathan yelled.
"Is that really the question you should be asking right now?" Hopper asked, "I wanna see you in my office."
"You won't believe me." Jonathan responded.
"Why don't you give me a try?" Hopper added.

The three teenagers now sat in the Hopper's office with Joyce and Hopper. Jonathan handed over the photo that he had taken of the monster.
"You say blood draws this thing?" Hopper asked, looking at the photo.
"We don't know." Jonathan answered.
"It's just a theory." Nancy added.
Joyce sighed, "Can you give us a minute?"
Joyce pulled both her children into the hallway and talked to them as soon as the door shut, "You should have told me about this."
"We're sorry, Mom." Beth promised.
"What, you're sorry? You're sorry?" Joyce asked, "That is not good enough Beth. Jonathan."
"I know." Jonathan winced.
"That's not even close. That's not even in the...in the ballpark." Joyce said, waving her arms around the room.
"We wanted to tell you...we just." Beth started.
"What if this thing took both of you, too." Joyce asked, "You risked both of your lives...and Nancy's."
Jonathan looked at Beth before stammering, "We thought we could save Will. Personally, I still do."
"This is not yours to fix alone. Either of you." Joyce said, "Jonathan. You act like you're all alone out there in the world, but you're not. And neither are you, Beth. You're not alone."
"I know." Jonathan said softly and Beth nodded.
"God damn it." Joyce said and pulled both her children in for a hug.
