Once the sun went down, Beth started getting worried. There was no sign of the creature and the three teenagers were still traispersing through the woods, which were getting very dark. Beth knew that they had come out there to find the creature but Beth was starting to be very worried about their plan. I mean, none of the teenagers were very good at using a gun and if it came down to it, would any of them actually shoot something, even if it was trying to kill them.
Nancy suddenly stopped and grabbed Beth's arm, causing Jonathan looked behind him at the two girls.
"What, are you tired?" Jonathan asked.
"No. Shut up." Nancy quieted him.
"What's going on?" Beth asked in a hushed whisper.
"I thought I heard something." Nancy said, looking between the twins and the woods around them.
Beth fell silent and looked around the woods until she heard a faint whimper. Beth's eyes widened, "It's coming from over there."
The three walked in the direction of the sound and shone their flashlights on the ground. Soon they spotted a deer that looked like it had been severely injured.
"Oh God." Nancy said, and kneeled down beside it, "It's been hit by a car."
Beth winced in sympathy. She hated seeing animals hurt and she felt ill as she knew there was nothing they could do.
"We can't just leave it." Nancy said, looking back at both twins.
Jonathan looked at Nancy before gesturing to the gun in her hand. Nancy looked confused for a second before she realized what he was suggesting. Nancy gripped the gun tighter and shakingly raised it towards the deer but didn't do anything for almost a solid minute.
Jonathan held out his hand, "I'll do it."
"Jonathan?" Beth asked, questioningly as she looked at her brother.
"I thought you said-" Nancy started, voicing the same question as Beth did.
"I'm not nine anymore." Jonathan said and stood up, cocking the gun.
Beth and Nancy stood up beside him and looked away, but before Jonathan could shoot and put it out of its misery, something suddenly pulled it away extremely fast.
The three teenagers jumped back in shock and looked at the place where the deer had just been.
"What was that?" Nancy asked, struggling to catch her breath.
Jonathan held the gun ahead of him as they walked forward, looking at the ground to see where it could have gone.
"Where'd it go?" Beth asked, scanning the ground with her flashlight.
"I don't know." Jonathan shook his head, "Do you see any more blood?"
"No." Nancy shook her head, scanning the ground.
Beth and Jonathan walked a little ways in another direction, scanning the ground for any sign of the deer or whatever had taken it.
"Do you think that was the same thing that Mom saw? I mean, the thing that took the deer?" Beth whispered to her brother.
"I don't know." Jonathan shook his head.
"I'm starting to hear those words a lot more." Beth joked as she knocked her shoulder against her brother's.
Jonathan smiled a little at that, "I feel like those are the only words I can use right now. There's just so much going on that's confusing."
Beth nodded and then looked around, "I don't see anything over here."
"Neither do I." Jonathan responded.
A scream suddenly erupted from where the two twins had left Nancy.
Jonathan and Beth stared at each other in horror before rushing back to where Nancy had been, although now there was no sign of her.
"Nancy!" Jonathan yelled.
"Nance!" Beth echoed her brother, "Nance, where are you?"
Nancy's backpack and bat were found on the floor against a tree, and the two looked around in confusion for there was no sign of her.
"Where could she have gone?" Beth asked, panicked.
"I don't know." Jonathan shook his head, shining the flashlight around the woods.
"Nancy!" Both twins called out, frantically, "Nancy! Nance please!"
Suddenly the two heard Nancy's voice, which sounded really far away, "Jonathan! Beth! I'm right here. Please, I'm here."
"Nancy!" Jonathan yelled, trying to find the source of her voice.
"Nancy! We're right here!" Beth yelled.
"Follow our voices, Nancy!" Jonathan yelled, trying to figure out where she was.
The two ran back to where her stuff was and Jonathan dropped it on the ground as Beth pointed to the tree, "Jon, look!"
The tree had some sort of opening and inside it, there was something that was making squelching noises. Beth grimaced as she leaned down and peered into it. She couldn't see through the opening to the other side as there was a lot of stuff blocking it, but she wasn't sure what that stuff was. Beth looked up at her brother in confusion.
"You don't think?" Beth asked, before something shot through, sending both Jonathan and Nancy scrambling back.
"What the hell?" Jonathan cursed.
"Jonathan! Beth!" Nancy's voice came from the tree opening.
Beth scrambled up from the ground and noticed that it was Nancy's hand that had shot through and startled the twins. Beth immediately grabbed it and pulled Nancy as hard as she could.
"Jonathan, a little help, please." Beth said, grunting with the effort.
Jonathan shot to her side and grabbed Nancy's upper arm to help Beth pull her through. It took a few more seconds before Nancy tumbled through the tree and onto both Jonathan and Beth.
Jonathan immediately wrapped his arms around Nancy, and Beth pulled her arms around her friend as well as Nancy clung to them both.
"Don't worry, you're safe." Jonathan whispered as Nancy cried in both of their arms.
