[Chapter Four: The Body]

>> >> >>

All Beth wanted to do was go home and cry, but Jonathan wasn't. Joyce had refused to get into the car and so Jonathan kept trying to convince her, from his car, which so far wasn't working.

"Mom, please get in the car." Jonathan yelled out the window.

"No, no, I need to think, just take your sister and go home." Joyce answered from the sidewalk.

Beth leaned her head against the window, as Jonathan parked the car and got out, racing after their mother. Beth groaned and reluctantly got out of the car, following them.

"Mom!" Jonathan called after her, running across the street.

"No. Just go home." Joyce shook her head.

"This is not an okay time for you to shut down." Jonathan lectured.

"Shut down?" Joyce shook her head.

"We have to deal with this. We have to deal with the funeral." Jonathan protested.

"The funeral? For who? That thing back there?" Joyce shook her head.

"Jon." Beth tried to grab his arm.

"No. Beth." Jonathan shook his sister off of him, "Let me get this straight. Will, that's not his body, because he's in the lights, right? And there's a monster in the wall? Do you even hear yourself?"

"Jonathan!" Beth yelled at him, "You're being an asshole."

"No, Beth. I'm not. I'm sorry but I don't believe you because the evidence that our brother is dead is right in front of us." Jonathan turned towards her.

"Look. I know it sounds crazy. I sound crazy." Joyce responded, "You think I don't know that? It is crazy. But I heard him, Jonathan! He talked to me. Will is talking to me! And he's out there and he's alone and scared."

Beth looked around to see people beginning to halt in their steps to stare at them. Beth had grown used to the weird looks that people gave them but she really didn't want to deal with them right now.

"I don't care if anyone believes me!" Joyce yelled, "I am not going to stop looking for him until I find him and bring him home!"

"Mom, Jon, you're making a scene." Beth hissed at her mom but they ignored her.

"Yeah, well while you're talking to the lights, the rest of us are having a funeral for Will!" Jonathan yelled as their mom walked away.

"Jon!" Beth hissed, trying to ignore the stares from passersby.

"No, Beth. I've had it." Jonathan yelled at her, "Now, are you coming?"

Beth scoffed, "You just invalidated things our mother's seen in front of half the town and made them think we're all crazy. So, no."

"Fine. You can find your own way home." Jonathan hissed and stormed off.

Beth sucked in several angry breaths before she spun on her heel and glared at the people looking at her, "Get a life!", before she stormed off.

Beth regretted yelling at her brother not even thirty minutes after he left. Since she didn't go to school that day, she didn't have anything to do. She would go home and study because her chemistry grade was definitely at an all-time low for her, but she didn't really feel like walking all the way there. She was tempted to go to the movies but she didn't have any money to spare ever since Steve Harrington had broke her brother's camera, and she was determined to save enough money to buy it back in time for Christmas.

Now, she just wandered around the town square and peered into the shops, wishing she had picked up more shifts at work. Speaking of work, she hadn't worked since her brother had gone missing, but her boss had agreed not to schedule her due to the added stress she had.

Beth saw Steve Harrington walking around outside. Beth snorted, of course he would be missing school. But then she realized that she was as well and she just rolled her eyes. She looked back over at him, and he immediately noticed her and she quickly looked away, before walking away as fast as she could.

Beth walked into the General store where her mom usually worked in order to look around. While she was looking, she noticed Steve walk in, and she immediately ducked her head and prepared to leave. She was not going to have another confrontation that day. She moved into another aisle and made a bee-line for the door.

As soon as she got outside, she walked as quickly as she could in the direction of the movie theater, determined to hide in there until Steve left the general vicinity.

She heard footsteps behind her, and she internally groaned, but she kept walking, hoping whoever was behind her would pass her, but when several people did and she still heard the footsteps behind her, she whirled around, coming face-to-face with Steve Harrington.

"Byers?" Steve said, sounding almost shocked.

"Harrington. Why the hell are you following me?" Beth crossed her arms over her chest and glared up at him.

Steve glared back at her, "What are you talking about?"

"You saw me across the street, then you followed me into Melvad's General and now you're following me again. Is your life so boring, that I'm your best entertainment?" Beth stated.

"No, I didn't-" Steve starts but Beth interrupts him.

"I have a missing brother, a mom who's going insane, and now a lowering grade in chemistry. I don't have time for you following me around." Beth responded.

"Don't flatter yourself Byers. I simply happen to be at the same place at the same time." Steve responds.

Beth gives him a dubious look and he sighs.

"Fine. I was looking for you because I wanted to apologize." Steve responds.

"Apologize for what?" Beth asks rudely, "Breaking my brother's camera, being a dick about my brother's disappearance, calling me a freak or telling me I'm going to lose my social status?"

"All of it, I guess." Steve says, "But your brother shouldn't have taken those pictures."

Beth laughs dryly, "Great apology."

Steve sighs, "Look, I know you're going through a hard time right now." He pauses, "I'm sorry about being a dick. And I'm sorry about what happened to your brother."

Beth swallows, "Thank you. And my brother's not dead, I mean, I don't know what to believe. But I appreciate the apology, even if I can't accept all of it. You should apologize to Jonathan, you know."

Steve nodded but didn't comment.

Beth looked curiously at him, "Okay, is that all? Because it's already been a bad day and I'd like to go home."

Steve sighed, "Do you even have a car?"

"No." Beth shook her head, "But I'll be fine."

Steve shook his head, "I'll drive you home."

"No, no, you don't have to do that." Beth said.

"You're so stubborn, you know that?" Steve said, "Just please, let me drive you home."

"Fine. But after this, you better leave me alone, Harrington." Beth said, but smiled as he led her to his car.
