What is a beta reader?

A person who reads over a story/chapter usually before it gets uploaded by the author.

Not every beta reader has the same skills! Also, anyone can be a beta reader, but I recommend at least that they know basic English grammar.

A beta reader can, for example, provide:

- feedback on a story/chapter by
➤ commenting/offering suggestions
➤ correcting grammar issues
➤ pointing out errors, plot holes, inconsistencies, or unclear passages.

It may look like this:

- brainstorming
➤ if you are stuck and before you begin a story

If a beta reader comments, you always have the right as a writer to decline comments. If you chose to work with someone:

Time management:

Please let the others know if you do not have time to work on a story as a beta reader/author. I say this from experience. I had beta readers who told me: "Yes, I'll review it today/in the next few days." And you wait and wait and ask two weeks later, and they tell you the same again and maybe say at four weeks, I've had enough now. You also have to be responsible as a beta reader, but also as an author.

Therefore, it's important to let someone know if you are having exams or too much stress at work, so you can't look over the story (anymore).

How do you work with a beta reader?

The best option is to work with Google Docs. Just share the docs, and you can choose how they can edit the text. [I suggest the comment option]
