4: A night of Relations
“Why didn’t you tell me that it was meant to be a restaurant?!”
“It was in the file.” She answered, with a sweet an innocent smile that made me want to go throw up in a corner somewhere.
“No it wasn’t!” I yelled back, my voice escalating to one of fierce potential.
“No?” her eyebrows raised before she scoffed and gave me the most sarcastic look on the planet. “Well it was meant to, I am so sorry.” She mocked an apology and put her hand over her heart dramatically.
“You know what.” I began my voice lowering a little. “Why don’t you shove your precious little file up your ass and then tell me your sorry, oh wait that’s right, you’d never be able to fine it again once it’s up there.”
I spun around before she could answer me back and I was tempted to king hit her right then and there and made my way over to my office. Stopping at my desk I ran my hands through my hair repeatedly, closing my eyes and trying my hardest to calm myself down.
The sound of a slight knock at the door caught my attention making me look back over my shoulder to see Julie casually leaning against the door frame; she was biting her lip and pinching her hand so that she didn’t burst out laughing.
“Don’t, please don’t.” I warned as I shook my head. I knew Julie wasn’t there in the room or else she would have just pushed me out of the way and started to tackle Rose to the ground herself but no doubt she heard it from another room.
“Ok. I won't. Do you want to get something to eat?” She asked, a slight chuckle escaped her lips but other than that she was in full controlled.
Taking a deep breath I nodded yes and proceeded to, grab my things and follow her out of the building.

Julie and I walked into a classy restaurant named ‘Charlies’ which Julie had assured me had the best pasta I will ever taste – ha yeah right! – But I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. It was a classy place, we were seated at a small rounded table with a red table cloth styled with candles in the middle, truthfully this was all very interment and formal but if the food was good I wasn’t complaining. The waiter came and took our order although I’m pretty sure Julie wanted his ass as a side dish judging by the way she was staring at it.
The waiter left us to ourselves to place our order and I couldn't help but smile at the awkward silence that we soon found ourselves in. We rarely found ourselves in an awkward silence or any type of silence at all, Julie didn’t let that happen but today was different, you could almost see the conversation and questions itching under her skin. I could only imagine what some of them were, I wonder which one she will go for?
“So… I heard what happened with Rose.” Ah so it was the most recent one. Damn I had my money on something else.
“Oh god” I muttered to myself and put my head in my hands. I can’t even escape it.
“Well done, I mean I didn’t think you had it in you.”
“Can we please talk about something else?” I said trying to divert her, my voice muffled by my hands.
“The way you just yelled at her in front of all the newbies, and then when you told her to shove her precious little file up her ass. Priceless!” She beamed at me, the laughter and entertainment clear in her voice.
“Julie. Please I’m begging you.” I groaned hoping she would take mercy on me.
“Ok, ok, fine.” She waved it off and began looking around the room for a new topic of conversation which may provide at least a little entertainment. “What do you want to talk about?”
“The weather?” I replied sarcastically, looking up from my hands.
“Naw look at you, all grown up and using sarcasm like it’s a language. Mamma’s proud.”
“Jules.” I begged in a pleading tone. I looked up at her and found her smiling wide, her shoulder shook a little as she tried not to laugh. I shook my head from side to side and put my head back down on the table this time.
“Oh I forgot to tell you. My brother’s going to be coming back here in a couple of months.” She beamed at the news.
With my ears picking up my head bounced off the table and I looked up at Julie wide eyed, a smile creeping its way onto my face.
“Wow that got your attention. I’m starting to think my family loves you more than me.”
“Well you know that’s probably true right?” I smiled at her.
“Shut up.” She mocked a grumpy face, resembling a two year tantrum in the supermarket.
“It was a joke”
“I know.” She took a deep breath and looked at me a little bit more seriously. “Speaking of family…” Oh god here we go.
“Jules.” I said in a rather warning tone. Don’t do it. Don’t ruin our lunch.
“When was the last time you spoke to your mother?” She did it, she ruined it.
I grimaced at the question, closing my eyes a little and shaking my head. Do I lie just to get out of this? No Jules knows all my tells, she will pick up on it and then I’ll have two lectures to deal with.
“Not long enough.” I muttered mainly to myself.
“You know you should call her every once and a while.” Well that’s a bit hard since I ripped up her number and burnt it a few years back.
“No I really shouldn’t.”
“She could have changed. It has been ten years.”
I stared at her in shock. I can’t believe she said that, she knew everything that happened and she still had the nerve to tell me to call her in hopes she’s changed! I eyed her wearily, she never pressures me about my mother, in fact she was the one who always supported my decision to have nothing to do with her. What’s changed?
“People don’t change; they only reveal their true selves.” I told her in all seriousness.
How was I supposed to be civil with that thing that was once my mother? She stormed out of the house when I was fourteen on Christmas morning without so much as a goodbye. My dad was distort and got really sick after that, passing away only a year later, broken hearted.
“Mia.”
“Julie.” I kept my voice stern.
“Fine, be like that.” She muttered and looked out the window for a moment. “What about your step dad?”
Yes, when I was forced to live with my mum after my dad died I found out she was married, and my new step father didn’t even know I existed but he did make an effort even though I made his life hell and played every prank I could possible think of on him. He didn't last more than a year after that, mum was off to the next leaving me with this strange I now called my guardian.
“What has gotten into you lately, why do you care if I haven’t talked to my mum?”
She shrugged. “I was just curious.” Yeah right.
“Well don’t be. John calls every couple of months to check up on me, make sure I’m still breathing and not on drugs.” Those were literally his opening questions. I don’t even have time to say more than hello before he asks.
“I liked him; he was the one who came to your graduation yeah?”
“Yes.” He was the only one.
“Well at least you got me, your sister and well I don’t really know if you want Mat as your brother – personally I think you can dodge that bullet.” She said proud before whispering the last part.
I laughed at her whispered comment. Little did she know that Mat would never be like a brother to me, it would be just too weird with our usual conversations or the fact that when I first meet him I did flirt my ass off – a fact he loves to remind me about. Mat was a friend and when I was in need of a brother he played that part momentarily as well.
The waiter bought over our food and I inhaled the spell of my pasta deeply. It smelt so good. My mouth began to water just at the smell of the heavenly pasta. Grabbing my silver fork I twirled it around my and brought it up to my mouth, taking in the taste of it on my tongue I closed my eyes and moaned at how good it taste. Opening my eyes I found and smiling Julie.
“What?” I asked completely confused.
“Oh honey you need so decent sex before that pasta gives you an orgasm.”
“Actually I think I’ll stick to the pasta it tastes better.” I joke and we both erupt into laughter.
The rest of the dinner ran along smoothly, Julie seemed her usual self expect she did seem a little touchy around the subject of her latest conquests so I just ditched the topic all together. After dinner we wondered over to the ice cream shop across the road and I was amazed by all of the things you could get mixed in with your ice cream.
Realizing the time I quickly said my goodbyes to Julie and made my way to my car back in front of my work. Getting to my car I quickly started it up and began driving, wasting no time.
I walked into the apartment and called out to Broody but got no answer. The lights were all off and it was almost pitch black in the room if it wasn’t for the dim street lights that floated in from the window. Sliding out of my jacket I draped it over a chair and put my keys and bag down on the table.
“Broody?” I called out again as I walked over to the bedroom. Maybe he’s asleep?
Getting to the door I gently pushed it open and saw the tangle messy sheets that were everywhere but no Broody. Sighing in annoyance I walked over and grabbed a hold of my phone, pressing call on his number. It rang and rang but he didn’t pick up.
Getting annoyed I put my phone down and walked over to take a shower. Where the hell could he be, it’s late and surely he can’t be doing that much over time.
I stepped under the spray of the high pressured warm water and tried to relax myself, the tensions and stress of work and relationships were starting to take their toll on my stiff muscles. I needed a massage. I won’t be so surprised if I walked out and found a grey hair that’s how stressed I felt lately. Finishing up in the shower I walked out and wrapped the towel around me and wrapped my hair in another. I walked out into the bedroom and realized how much of a messy it really was. God I need to clean this.
I walked over to my phone and saw a missed call from Broody and a text message. I rolled my eyes and picked up my phone, opening up the message.
One of the guys is retiring this week, we went out for drinks I’m sorry I forgot to tell you babe. Did you have a good day?
I rolled my eyes again. It’s not like you care how my day was. You usually just smile and nod. Taking a deep breath I quickly replied.
Yeah, I guess you forgot. My day was… interesting, I’ll tell you about it when you get home.
His reply took almost five minutes.
Ok, I’ll head home after the next round. Love you xo
“Next round?” I said out loud to myself. “If you end up dead around a telephone poll I am not going to your funeral” I muttered into the phone angrily. He wasn’t stupid enough to drink and drive was he? Maybe he was going to take a cab.
Sighing I quickly typed a reply;
Don’t be a dickhead.
His reply was almost instant.
What?
I smiled and typed back;
Sorry auto correct. I Love you too xoxo
I put my phone on the bedside table and quickly slipped into my shorts and singlet before climbing into bed. I wasn’t going to wait up for him. I couldn’t be bothered; I was tired and had a long day tomorrow.
