18: The Direction of Conversation
"How the hell does this even work" I grumbled as I laid there on my back, my legs in the air and my eyes, sore from what I was seeing. It would be really awkward if someone walked through my apartment car park right now and saw me like this. I wouldn't know what to say to them or how to explain it. I would probably just blush and avoid them until I moved away.
I was in the drivers' seat – well kind of. I had very awkwardly lowered myself down laid my back on the floor with my head under the steering wheel – resting on the foot pedals – and my feet up in the air losing circulation. I had my wire cutters in hand and was staring blankly at all of the wires that were in front of me. I didn't know what to do. I had seen in the movies where people had cut wires and stuck them together and different things happened but I had no idea if it actually worked – because, you know, you can't trust movies.
I took out my phone and my finger hovered over Jordan's number. He knew a lot about cars, that I knew but I haven't called or spoken to him in any way in a week and a half since I had pulled my last plot – leaving me rather stuck under the steering wheel of a car with no idea what it is I'm doing.
So naturally I started cutting any and every wire I could find. After cutting most of the wires I decided to match them up by colour, this colour looked pretty with that one and this with that one. Putting the wires together I got a little bit of sticky tape hoping it would help with keeping them in place I shoved them – rather roughly – back in behind the body of the car. Feeling proud of myself for actually doing it without the help of a man I tried to get up off of the floor and hit my head on the bottom of the wheel sending me back down on my back.
Owe.
I then tried wiggling my but back to get out but realized that the seat was there. How did I even get down here in the first place? I wiggled myself to the side and tried to climb up using the wheel and the hand break – it was great until I realized that my body wasn't meant to bend so much and my legs weren't meant to twist in the other direction.
So I did what any normal girl would do in this situation. I called a friend.
"Julie" I whined as she picked up the phone. "I'm stuck and I need your help."
"What do you mean you're stuck?" She questioned her voice heavy from sleep.
"I mean I am on my back under the steering wheel with my legs in the air and I cant get up. I think I can roll out of the door but I can't reach the handle." I complained and crossed my fingers hoping she would come and get me.
"Well that's what you get for being short."
"Hey you're short too!"
"Yeah but it looks better on me." He giggled and I felt myself calm down. "I'll be there in ten."
And eight minutes of me playing angry birds on my phone Julie knocked on the car window. She glanced down for a minute and I watched as he took in my appearance and fell backwards. Her laughter could be heard from Mars. "Julie!" I called out not wanting to stay under here any longer.
"Sorry but trust me, if you could see yourself you'd be laughing too." She giggled as she opened the door but instead of helping me out she just started taking pictures.
"Jules, help me."
"Oh yeah right." She said like it hadn't crossed her mind before.
She grabbed my hand and I used her to lift my back off the ground and pull myself over to the edge and out of the car, swinging my legs out of the car and sitting up. The rush of blood leaving my head made me a little light headed and my tummy turned for a moment.
"So let me guess. You lost an earring down there?" She asked as she leaned against the car and allowed me to try and pull myself together.
"No. I was trying to mess with the wires." I held up the wire cutters and sticky tape.
"Trying too?"
"Yeah, I probably failed but o well I tried." I shrugged and turned to go back upstairs when I walked into a car.
Another Ouch.
"O honey this is not your day." Julie said crossing her arms over her chest and shaking her head at me.
I groaned and put my hands on my stomach where the side mirror had brutally stabbed me. That hurt. I pouted and looked back at Julie for a moment. She seemed like her usual self again which I was glad of.
"Come on, I'll make you some breakfast." I told her and she beamed at me. It was the least I could for waking her up at six in the morning and asking her to come and get me out of the car. We made our way up to the apartment and I heard the shower running just as we got in. Broody was up.
I walked over to the tap and turned the hot water on full blast and started pulling out the toaster and jam for Julie. "What are you doing?" she asked me and gestured to the water.
I smiled and held up my finger indicating for her to just wait for a minute, and sure enough that's all it took. Broody screams and cruses could be heard from outside.
Julie started laughing and I quickly cut the water before making her jam toast.
"Hey did you use the water?" Broody asked as he walked out of the room with nothing but a towel on, he froze the minute he saw Julie.
"Yeah sorry, I needed a drink and forgot you were in the shower." I apologized while both Julie and Broody death stared each other. "Guys" I clapped gaining their attention and waved Broody off as I gave Julie her breakfast.
"Has Matt called you lately?" Julie asked as she took a bite of her toast.
"Yeah a couple of weeks ago but he's been texting me and stuff why?" I asked thinking maybe she was going to mention her break down. I had tried to poke around the subject but she had just shut me down.
"No reason, just wondering." She smiled but it didn't reach her ears.
Oh Julie.
Broody came back out fully dressed this time and his nose took him straight to the toaster. "Where's mine?"
"You got hands make it yourself Fabio." Julie snapped.
Broody's eyebrows rose and he looked totally surprised as did I. Broody and Julie have never been good friends, they at one stage had made it to acquaintances but they knew how to be civil with each other.
"What's up her ass?" Broody whispered to me as he kissed my cheek.
I just shrugged and tapped his shoulder saying goodbye before he left for work. Once out of the apartment Julie and I both ran to the window, tripping over the rug on the floor and jumping over the couch only to face plant into the glass.
"Look there he is." I pointed out as he walked over to his car. The lights flashed as he unlocked it and he slid inside. He started it up and waited in anticipation.
The car headlights went on and then off. His left indicator flashed and then his windshield wipers started at a fast pace. His horn started blaring and that was it for Julie to break out in laughter. I waited and watch as he banged his hand against the steering wheel – clearly frustrated. The light to the car went back on and then the boot opened on it's own accord. The final straw was the stereo blaring a one direction song that I had jammed into his stereo just because I knew he hated them.
I joined Julie on the floor, my stomach hurting and clenching as the laughter shook me. Well sometimes the movies were right.

Julie and I made our way out to do some shopping, since it was a Saturday and I had made it my mission to relax this weekend, I also figured it would be a great way to see if she really was okay. We drove for a little while until we reached DFO and found ourselves flicking through the racks of Forever New. I pulled out this beautiful teal coloured dress that was short at the front but long at the back. I ran my hand threw the light, soft material and just imagined it on my skin and how light and airy it would feel – especially on a warm night.
"Come on." Julie said tugging my arm and dragging me over towards the change rooms. "You're going to try it on." She told me before I could protest.
I shook my head as she shoved me into the room and made me put on the dress. It was priced a little higher then I would usually spend on a dress but hey if it looks good who am I do complain. I slipped on the dress and turned around in the mirror, examining it. The colour against my lightly tanned skin reminded me of a certain persons eyes they way they looked when he was staring at me in the water. A beautiful blue green right before they darkened.
Julie banged on the door and it sounded for a moment like she was using her head. I opened the door and put my arms out showing her the dress and raising an eyebrow. "What do you think."
"I love it. The colour looks great on you." She told me and made me do a spin. I smiled and quickly peeled off the dress and chucking it on the door so I could get dress without leaving it on the floor since I didn't have any time to put it on the hanger just yet. Sliding back into my jeans and lose tee I spun around to grab the dress. What the hell? Where did it go?
I opened the door and turned the corner only to find Julie at the checkout counter with the dress. I smiled and bounced over to her. "If you're buying that dress for yourself then you are so not my best friend anymore, but if you are buying it for me then I love you so much."
She turned around and gave me a look that said 'are you serious'. "Yes I'm buying it for you idiot. Think of it as an early birthday present."
"Thank-you best friend." I smiled.
"You're welcome best friend." She giggled and passed me the bag.
We started walking along the center isle of the shopping center, making general conversation and stopping at certain shops as we went past. On the surface Julie seemed to be normal but I knew her too well to believe in that façade. I wanted to try and get to the point of what it is that is up with her but I couldn't just force it out of her – so I decided to go fishing.
"So I talked to John the other day." I started with talking about myself. I figured family was a touchy subject with her at the moment so I would start a there.
"Oh yeah? How'd that go?" She asked and I could see the curiosity in her eyes.
"Good. He wants me to come and visit, meet this new girlfriend of his."
"How do you feel about that?"
"Okay I think. I mean he deserves to find happiness and he did give up his youth for me." It was the answer I had come up with after a long time of thinking about it.
"Yeah but I mean he's your dad, you're allowed to be a little, you know..." She trailed off.
"Still I should at least give her a shot I suppose."
"Yeah."
"Have you spoken to your parents lately?" I shifted the conversation and noticed the tension begin to build. I truly believe that this was something to do with family, but what?
"Mum called not too long ago but I think Dad is still pissed about our fight, the man holds a grudge like a bear holds a fish." She rolled her eyes and I couldn't help but giggle a little. I admit her father at first wasn't the warm and most kindest person you've meet but after a little while I saw his funny side and if there was one thing that I liked about that man was that he truly loved his family and would do anything for them – that was the only trait that Matty took from his father, if you exclude looks.
I giggled at her comparison. "I'm sure that he isn't that mad, he loves you."
"I know it's just, he is so frustrating and just won't listen." Yeah I know someone else like that.
"Maybe you could go for a visit." I suggested.
"No, not with work and Matt coming to stay." She shook her head at the idea and dismissed it so quickly I almost got whip lash. "That reminds me have you thought about what you're going to do when you leave Broody?" She said diverting the conversation. Nicely played Julie.
"Not really why?" Maybe I should start sorting that out.
"Well if you come back to living with me, then Matt's going to have to live on the couch until he can find a place." She mentioned and I knew that she had been sitting on this idea for a little while. I knew that with Matt's job working in a publishing firm, the money wasn't great which means moving out on his own wasn't likely to happen anytime soon – and I knew just how uncomfortable that couch can be.
"Oh yeah I forgot about that. I'll figure something out." I told her trying to get her back off the topic of me.
"Well why don't you and Matt move into a place together." She suggested.
I looked at her like she was mad. Yeah I can only imagine what will happen if we moved in together – he was the kind of guy who only wore his boxers when he was at home, a fact that I had once loved when he stayed with us one time.
"But then you'd be alone."
"That's fine. I love living alone." She said rather unconvincingly. I turned to her in surprise and saw she wasn't looking at me but at the floor as if she had found something very interesting.
"No you don't, you complain about it all the time." I said frowning my brow in my confusion.
"No I don't!" She snapped making me flinch.
"Jules what's wrong." Hey I dug myself in this deep might as well go for it.
"Nothing I'm fine okay." She took a few steps away from me and I could see her eyes watering but I knew she would never show me her tears. She turned her head around fast as if looking for a quick getaway. "Oh look a sale." She beamed, her tears forgotten as she skipped over towards Roxy.
I pouted in frustration and soon followed her, watching carefully as she went through the clothes, our previous conversation forgotten.
I took Matt's advice and didn't pressure her for an answer. Instead we continued shopping and enjoying our weekend, we talked about music and the up and coming concerts she wanted to go to. We joked around and picked up some good sales before heading home.
When I got back home I had a wide smile spread across my face and my giggles shook my body like an earthquake constantly. Walking in the apartment and I heard light sobs that I thought for a moment that they were coming from next door but as I walked closer to the bedroom they got louder and louder.
Pushing open the door I stared blankly at the scene in front of me.
