CHAPTER 2: PREDATOR AND PREY

Saad was getting concerned now.

At first, he was sure it was just another stupid misunderstanding due to incompetent law enforcers. What was new about that?

He was actually more worried about Areeb and his thick skull.

But he wasn't so sure anymore.

The people in the local thana were hellbent on believing him to be some Khan. And by the reaction on their faces, this Khan was not a normal person. All of them looked downright terrified for some reason.

And Saad wouldn't be caught dead associating with such people, that's for sure.

Saad knew some people with Khan as a last name but none of them would get mistaken for him or vice versa. At least, none of them would elicit this kind of reaction from people.

He was sure he doesn't know any Khan from Hyderabad of all places. Hell, it was his first time here in this city!

Despite that, he and his family had tried and failed to make them believe his identity. He was just plain old Saad Hussain from Karachi, for God's sake!

Maheer and Neelu had even shown them their childhood pictures. But these weird people were adamant in their claims.

So they did the only logical thing to clear up this unnecessary misunderstanding. They called this Khan or whoever he was and asked him to come to the Thana, all while looking like they would rather jump in front of an oncoming truck.

Well, Saad and his family were relieved.

As soon as that man showed up, all this mess will be sorted out and they could go back to the actual problem at hand.

Saad was sure of himself.

At least he was.....

It wasn't long before a fleet of ominous-looking jet-black cars dashed through the driveway in front of the Thana's gates. The cars moved until the only white one among them was parked right in front of the doors. From the surrounding cars, armed men dressed in black rushed out and lined up at the entrance.

Okay, this doesn't look very good, does it?

Curiously, Maheer and Neelu moved forward to take a closer look along with the rest of their family while Saad stood behind, in the corner as usual. He could see a guard walk forward and open the door to the white car. Saad could see a man getting out.

And as he got out, the whole police station went dead silent together.

....................................................................................................................................................

Maheer couldn't stop the gasp that left her mouth. She didn't know if she should believe what her eyes were seeing.

Was this an elaborate illusion?

The man that got out of the car while looking at his phone, in a clearly expensive inky suit, looked like he was straight out of the covers of some business digest. He walked inside in long and fast steps with all the surety of a lion stalking his prey.

Even from a distance, Maheer could tell the man was powerful. He oozed an aura of silent authority and promised danger.

This upcoming storm was felt by everyone in the room.

The officers around them rushed toward the man in question.

The man finally came to stand still in the middle of the room. Taking off his dark shades, he looked at the inspector.

..........................................................................................................................................................

Now it was time for Saad to gasp.

Because those eyes, the eyes that held so much rage and authority were like looking into the mirror.

This unknown man who had brazenly strode inside a police station with armed men like he owned the building, looked exactly like Saad. His face, his eyes, his build- everything looked like Saad's.

His sister was looking back and forth between her brother and the newcomer. There was no doubt. Despite their clothing, their presence, and their hairstyle or facial hair, these two men looked alike.

The newcomer, on the other hand, still hadn't noticed Saad and had completely ignored his gaping family in favor of glaring at the police inspector. He was constantly checking the time on his vintage Rolex and looked increasingly more enraged with each passing minute.

"Inspector Sahab, is this your idea of April fools or do you have a better reason for calling the Shahnewaz Haveli?" the man spoke in a deep voice with barely concealed anger, all while his eyes were trained on the poor inspector.

The inspector looked around desperately like a mouse in a trap. That's when his eyes finally landed on Saad and he remembered why exactly he had risked his job to call the Haveli.

"Why don't I show you, Khan?" He hoped to God his voice hadn't wavered too much.

The elusive Khan just raised one of his eyebrows in answer and nodded.

"It better be worth it, inspector."

The warning in his words was not lost to anyone.

Everyone held their breath as the frightened inspector raised his hand and pointed towards the bewildered Saad standing next to his equally astonished family.

As his eyes landed on Saad, all the anger left the man's eyes. Only the shock remained. He looked like he wasn't breathing.

A tirade of emotions passed through those expressive eyes until something unrecognizable flickered in them and the man walked forward.

He moved ahead with confident grace. The surety in his eyes was back as if nothing had happened. He prowled like a panther, eyes carefully observing Saad.

Under his gaze, Saad, suddenly, felt like helpless prey at the mercy of a predator. The only similarity between them was their faces and nothing else.

The man stood in front of him with his broad back straight and head held high while Saad cowered into himself. His eyes held confusion and questions while the man's held calculation and determination.

As the two men with one face stood face to face, they both came to the same conclusion.

But Saad was terrified of voicing out the thought while the man was already deciding ways to confirm it.

Just when Saad thought the man would speak to him, he looked over at his father and asked for that one answer that Saad was dreading to hear.

"Is he adopted?"

Pls, say no, dad, pls!
