Junior Year Beginnings
Trinity
Have you ever felt that feeling when starting a new chapter in your life? A new chapter that would reflect your future self? A specific part of your life where you started to grow as a person? Or how about falling in love? Ever been torn in between two decisions? Well I felt these feelings when starting my Junior year in high school.
As I sat in front of my black and gold vanity desk, looking in the mirror, I ran my comb through my thick black textured afro. The song "Dreamgirls" sang through my vocal chords. It was one of my all time favorite musical songs. Ever since I was a little girl, my voice has always sounded like gold. Just like my mother. People always told me that I resemble my mother with my dark brown eyes, my chocolate skin, my heart-shaped face, my naturally arched eyebrows, my thin build body, my small nose and full lips. I've gotten compliments like "She's a goddess", "She looks like a mini girl version of the Jackson 5 members" and "She looks like a model". It was pretty flattering.
I picked up my red lipstick and smoothly smeared it across my lips. As I was doing that, my older sister, Naomi, came into the room.
"Sis, mom wants you down for breakfast in the next two minutes."
"I won't be down for breakfast," I responded, still focused on myself in the mirror.
"Why not?"
"Felix is picking me up and getting me breakfast on the way to school."
"Oh, have fun then."
I glanced at her and smiled.
After she walked off, my other older sister, Ashley, who was literally in college at the time, strolled into my room, possibly to start drama.
"What do you want?" I asked, trying my best not to roll my eyes.
"Relax, I just wanna borrow some of your bracelets."
I eyed her suspiciously. "Why?"
"I'm going out later tonight."
"Okay? Borrow some from mom or your friends. Don't they have jewelry?"
"Yeah, but they don't have gold jewelry plus mom's jewelry is ancient so..."
I stopped what I was doing and turned around to fully face her. "So you can get out of my room. You are not borrowing anything from me."
"Trinity-"
"No, get out."
Ashley huffed, flaunted her long straight black hair, rolled her eyes, and disappeared from my room. I heaved a sigh of relief and finished getting ready.
Ashley always wanted to borrow my stuff, even without my permission. It was honestly annoying. You probably thought that it's usually the younger siblings that do this, but no. For me, it's literally the other way around. Ashley is like the most dramatic person in our household. She resents me, Naomi, and basically the whole family since she's the only human child. She's like an outcast but we never treated her as such. Our parents loved all of us equally and treated us equally except when it came to trouble. I had been "responsible" for her wrong doings on countless occasions.
After I was finished getting ready, I waited outside on the front porch, expecting my best friend, Felix, to show up within the next 5 minutes. Then I heard a car beep and noticed that Felix's car was pulling up in front of my house with his 2011 Kia Sorento. I smiled and did a little run to the car.
"Hey Felix!" I beamed as I opened the car door and got in.
"Hey! It's been so long!"
"I know right!"
"So, how was summer break?" Felix asked as he pulled off.
"It was interesting. My parents took us to meet the other half of our family."
"And how did that go?"
"Well it was weird. I was being asked so many questions, some were even embarrassing," I whined on the last part.
"Damn, did you at least have a good time?"
"Yeah I did. Mom dropped a bombshell on us saying that we were royalty and I played around in the castle, scoping things out."
"Wait a minute...you're a princess?" Felix glanced at me for a few seconds with a shocked expression before putting his focus back on the road.
"Yeah, you could say that."
We were silent for a moment before he said something else.
"Well, for me, it was the same old. Walking around the city of Sacramento and enjoying the hot weather."
I nodded my head, listening as I stared out of the window.
Felix made a quick stop at Starbucks and brought us a coffee and some cake pops then we stopped at Mickey D's for an actual breakfast sandwich. Felix and I did this routine frequently and at the time, it had been a whole year since we've been doing it.
"Can I have your other cake pop?" I asked, smiling at him.
"No."
"Please."
"No."
I reached my hand over to his nicely wrapped cake pop that was laying on the center console. He playfully smacked my hand away from it and a serious expression was clouding his face but I could see his mouth slightly forming a sly smile. I chuckled and enjoyed the ride to school.
Upon arriving on the school grounds, people just stared at us. Majority of everyone at the school would always do that when me and Felix would enter the school together. It was weird. We ignored the stares considering we had already grown accustomed to it. Felix accompanied me to my first class which didn't take very long.
I let out a sigh and said, "Well this is it. Junior year is now starting."
"Yep, same school, same people, same friends, what else?"
"Oh stop it. We'll both get more involved in things and make tons of new friends. I know it sucks that most of our friends have already graduated."
"Mhm. Tell me about it."
"But you sir, " I pressed my index finger into his chest. "This is your last year in high school so you better make the most of it."
"Yes ma'am."
We bursted out laughing and he finally walked off to find his class. Felix and I had been friends since middle school. We were closer than ever now that we were approaching our last years of high school.

"Trinity!"
My head turned towards the voice that had supposedly shouted my name in the middle of the hallway. My eyes widened with excitement as I recognized my girl best friend. Someone I knew since elementary school. Her light brown hair was in a curly, but puffy ponytail. She was running towards me with a huge smile stretched across her face.
"Harmony!" I exclaimed. I ran towards her and embraced her in a bear hug, she returned the gesture.
"Oh my god, how you been? Haven't heard from you all summer," Harmony said, pulling apart from our hug.
"I've been good and I was kinda occupied all summer."
"Occupied with who? Felix?"
"Girl, no. I was out of the country all summer and Felix was definitely not the only thing on my mind."
'Stop kidding yourself. You were definitely thinking about him all summer.'
"Mhm sure, now tell me all about your vacation."
As we walked through the halls I told Harmony about my entire vacation including the fact that I'm now considered royalty, but also telling her to keep it a secret. She was all ears and obviously excited. We ended up having the same English class that period. After class, we hung out in the library during our lunch period. We ended up seeing Felix in there looking for books. Harmony and I decided to spy on him from a different isle. He was so focused on the books that were lined up neatly on the bookshelf and I observed his face.
'His face has grown more handsome.'
My eyes lingered down to his arms–his muscles, they were roughly flexed through his t-shirt, especially when he moved one of his arms to run his hand through his brown hair, ruffling it loose at the top. He looked incredibly sexy with his Quiff haircut. I took note of the fact that he had been working out. My eyes were about to wander some more until Harmony snapped me out of it.
"Girl, are you checking him out?"
"What? No, I-I was just wondering how tall he had gotten."
"Mhm sure."
"He's just my best friend, nothing else."
"Yeah, keep telling yourself that."
"Trinity? Harmony?"
I flinched, now realizing that Felix was right in front of us, gazing at us with an unreadable expression.
"Uh hey Felix," I slowly and nervously said. Harmony basically left me standing there after a brief "hello". I felt a little small with Felix's dark brown eyes gazing at me.
"What were you doing?"
"Oh I was just looking at all of these books. It's been awhile since I've read anything good." This wasn't really a lie even though this was the only thing I could think of.
"Oh, need some help finding a book?"
"Yes, definitely."
Felix helped me find a book in the romance section. He was quite surprised by the book choice but didn't question it. Then we caught up some more. He told me that he was thinking about trying out for the soccer team again but then he told me about something new he started getting into.
"Trinity, I've been getting into cars now. Like I want to be a mechanic like my dad."
"Oh, that's new. What about soccer? I thought that was your dream."
"Soccer is still definitely my dream. I just wanted to expand to other things. I don't wanna just do soccer as a career."
"Yeah, that's understandable."
'I could really imagine him as a mechanic. He has the muscles for it.'
"What about your career? Have you decided yet?" He asked as he nudged me playfully with a smile.
"Yeah, I want to be an actress, singer and fashion model."
"That's a lot, but then again, you love acting and singing. You also come to school in high fashion. So I think you can manage very well."
I smiled at his encouragement. "Well thanks."
We left the library and split ways again. I happily walked off to my science class. When I wandered in, an energetic and pretty girl greeted me, calling me gorgeous and that she was my number one fan. I assumed she was talking about my high fashion taste. She had light brown skin, sandy brown natural hair in 2 two big puffballs, and brown eyes. She was wearing low-rise jeans with a black cropped off-the-shoulder long sleeve t-shirt. Her fur boots appeared snug on her feet.
"Uhh thanks." That's all I could manage to say.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to introduce myself," she said as she held out her hand. "I'm Carmyn."
I shook her hand and introduced myself as well. "I'm Trinity."
"Pretty name."
"Thanks."
"Of course! Would you like to sit next to me?"
"Sure!"
I followed her lead to the two seater table she was seated at. I walked around to my empty seat and we both plopped down into our chairs. We began chatting about what we love to do and what we had in common. We were actually starting to hit it off and she seemed so genuinely friendly. She made science class fun with her humorousness. It gave me a reason not to dread going to science class anymore.
