Chapter Three
Joelle
There should not have been a level of surprise when I was told that One Direction was coming in for an interview. After all, their single had just been released and they needed as much play time for it as possible. Originally, Neva was supposed to do the whole thing while I got the day off. Neva was our main DJ at Mess and she certainly had a bubbly personality; I don't think she ever shut up. The two of us were complete opposites, as I stayed on the quiet side unless I was on air. She was always happy and always talking. So I was aware that One Direction were doing an interview with the station, but it was supposed to be on the day I wasn't required to go in. But Neva called in with food poisoning, resulting in a last minute call to me. I had plenty of mixed emotions on having to now conduct this interview as I wasn't exactly sure what would happen.
I enjoy One Direction's music, but as with every celebrity I've met: the person talked about in magazines is totally different from the actual person. The thoughts, the dreams, the reality for these people aren't widely distributed. Instead, the things that would make them sell more albums was what everyone talked about. That's the way the celebrity world worked.
When I was informed that I would have to take over the One Direction interview, I wasn't sure how to feel about it. Three nights ago I had been in the company of Zayn Malik and I enjoyed every last bit of it, for the first time I didn't sit and listen to someone drone on about their life for hours. Yet I actually found myself wanting to know about him. I let a sigh pass through my lips as I adjusted my cross-body purse before entering the back of the radio station. The front was already plagued with girls all hoping for a glimpse of their favorite popstars. Plenty of people were in the building already as well - despite the clock reading 5:40AM. A few of my co-workers gave me a wave before going on with their business, each one knowing exactly what to do in order to keep the station running smoothly.
When I had first started my internship, I had been so overwhelmed with how much work needs to be done at a place like this. Honestly, I used to think that all that was needed was a mic and a DJ with some songs. There are certain procedures, though. Such as the ability to set up songs in the correct order with commercial breaks and news segments, or organizing radio parties. As time went on, I became much more comfortable: it had become my second home.
"Joelle!" Carrie, the general manager, called out as I passed by the break room. I skidded to a stop and popped my head into the room, eyes immediately latching onto her. As usual, her brown hair was swirled up in a messy bun and she had a pencil between her pointer and middle finger, occasionally chewing on the end. In a pencil skirt and floral blouse, she gave off the perfect picture of a manager.
"Yeah?" I said so she knew I was listening.
"Once you're settled, we're having a meeting in the conference room. Thank you so much for coming in last minute, you're the most reliable person ever and I love you for it!" She grinned and gave me a thumb's back before going back to a conversation she seemed to be having with the sales manager. Carrie was one of those bosses that complimented you often, trying to make you feel needed. Sometimes it was exactly what someone was desperate to hear and made them work much harder at their job. Though, whenever we had a problem occur, she'd have a hard time talking to the person who caused it as Carrie loved to encourage people, not lecture them.
I continued through the halls, giving acknowledging nods towards the few people who offered a 'hello' in my direction. Finally I reached my destination, the studio area. The place that had become my home away from home, the place where I knew I could talk as much as I wanted about music and people listened. It was quite large, with the set-up all ready for five extra bodies later. A yawn escaped as I pulled my purse over my head and tucked it into the corner where I usually left my things. I pulled my phone out and shoved it into my pocket, because I knew that I'd have to use it later for something. Whether it'd be because of Twitter or a call from Grimmy, it was always a good idea to keep it on me so I didn't get yelled at later for not having it on me. After I was sure everything was the way it needed to be set up in the studio, I started my way back towards the break room. Directly next to it was the conference room, which we used the term 'conference' very loosely. Instead of a table surrounded by chairs, we had four black leather couches and coffee tables. Right after I had gotten my internship, they decided we should have the luxury of being comfortable while discussing the day's plans. It was also a brilliant place for naps. Shrugging my arms out of my grey jacket, I hung it up on the coat rack.
"Is everyone here?" Carrie inquired, her eyes scanning the room for a headcount after I had settled onto a couch. I tried my best to keep my eyelids from sliding shut, mentally yelling at myself for not sleeping the night before. Carrie clapped her hands together twice. "Good! You guys are so awesome about being here on time, thank you for that! So today is a big day: we have One Direction coming in at ten am! I'd like to thank Joelle especially for coming in at such late notice, I don't know what we'd do without you. Once they arrive, we are letting them into the break room where we'll let them relax for a bit before shuffling them into the studio. Luke, will you give us the rundown of the interview?"
Luke nodded quickly, not moving an inch from where he was leaned back into the couch. He looked to me and smiled, because he knew that this information was most important to me. Luke was in charge of setting up and organizing interviews, such as talking to their manager and discussing what we're allowed to talk about. "We have them for twenty minutes, with two three minute commercial breaks in the mix. I already chose the Twitter questions, which is already in the folder on the desk in the studio. Along with that is the basic questions to ask, plus a short acapella version of their single. Taboo subjects are their 'bromances', their management, their personal schedules and Louis' new break-up. Try to talk up their album a lot, yeah?"
I nodded at Luke. "Won't be a problem."
"Remember to cater to their every need while here, we want them to remember us and it not be tied with a horrible experience! I know you are all brilliant people, so I want you to show them that! Before they come, we have our normal rundown of music. Joelle, when you take over for Joey, I want you to scan the list of songs that have been chosen. There will be a commercial break every four songs and we have a ten minute world news section and the pop news section for five minutes. We're also trying to play the One Direction single to get the listeners excited - make sure you talk it up! Marielle, you're so amazing at the social networking, so could you spread the word a bit there too? If anyone has questions, please stay after to talk to me. Let's have a great, upbeat day!" Carrie finished her talk, fluttering her hands as if expecting us to take off and fly.
I couldn't help but have the impending thoughts of Zayn invading my mind. Would he remember me? If so, will he be the normal popstar and pretend he doesn't? He's the one person that I've almost truly talked to about myself, not just little facts. I've never felt the comfortability before, usually when people insisted on knowing about me, I shrugged them off. Was I just having an off night? Or was there something special about him?
"Joelle! Want to go over the Twitter questions before you go on air?" Luke interrupted my thoughts and I nodded quickly, the two of us heading straight towards the studio. We were careful to avoid making noise while in there, since Jake was currently on the air. He was our midnight to seven am DJ, and I could tell that he was beyond ready to go home. Once we had grabbed the folder, we exited the studio and headed back towards the break room. Luke was a sweet guy, and for being fifteen years older than I, he was in tune with current sensations. "You can choose quite a few of these, I made they sure they were all within the allowed topics and such."
I nodded to confirm that I was listening, as I scanned the list. They were the typical questions teenage girls wanted to know about their idols. I made sure I found a few that were unique that would change up the normal questions.
"I know you're going to be brilliant, you're great with treating celebrities like real people. They're around your age too, maybe you'll walk away with a few numbers." Luke winked and I couldn't help but laugh.
"I know you all want me to get a boyfriend, but when it comes to these boys… They could get any girl they wanted." I spoke. The entire radio crew had long ago decided that I needed a boyfriend and they'd go to extreme measures. Such as the time we got a temporary sound guy so that our current person could take a two week break. They had done everything they could do to make us go out. It didn't work.
"You're an extraordinary girl, they'd be crazy if they didn't go after you." Luke said with a knowing grin. He was a sweet-talker, and I'm sure that's the reason he's married with two kids. Although, his good looks probably helped with that as well. Luke had a sturdy structure, standing at around 6'1 and had dusty brown hair that had specks of grey in it. I had told him before that if he had a son my age, there wouldn't be a boyfriend issue anymore. Unfortunately, he had a ten year old girl and a six year old girl. Wrong gender and a bit too young.
"Thanks for the help, I'm gonna go relieve Jake."
"Three hours of modern music and then we get to have trying to set you up with one of the members of One Direction!" Luke warned with a joyous laughter.
