coMing out 4!

Tape four. Decorated with a painting of a scarlet "A".

Deejay needed assistance with everything that had occurred involving Daren, his father, and Shery, but because he was aware that his family was quite fiercely homophobic, he turned to a source whose credibility he wasn't entirely certain of. The protagonist of this, the fourth cassette, is none other than Dallo, DeeJay's half brother.

No one knows of this but DeeJay's father cheated on his mother a long time ago. She herself didn't find out until he randomly brought his bastard son to the house one day. A seventeen year old boy who he gave both his first and last name. DeeJay was just entering secondary school two years ago when he found out about him along with his mother.

Because of his father's adultery, his parents fought for months after that. DeeJay, who was still a little young and had never seen his parents that angry and neglectful towards each other was torn between two worlds. Sometimes he just watched his mother as she cried in the next room, not knowing what to say or do because he felt guilty that if he took one's side he would loose connection with the other. His father kept bringing Dallo to the house for months after introducing him, and his mother didn't hide her disdain for him.

She'd give him filthy glances. Shout at him for the most insignificant things, such as not completing the food she prepared for him. Look through his belongings while he was in the shower. And he was even questioned fiercely by her on occasion.

Dallo was extremely frustrated with this. He just wanted to spend some time and get to know his father but it was like she was making it more difficult than it should've been. Especially because he had to be traveling from his home country to here every couple of months and didn't get to see his father much so he wanted to make the most of his visits. And it's not like he could talk to his mother about it because she passed away a year before that. So he was stuck going through mental abuse. But after-all he still wanted her to accept him but it was becoming hopeless. He knew what his father had done clearly hurt her and that was the root of her anger and bitterness towards him but he hoped for her to see past that one day and realize that in all of this he is the innocent one. He even gave at his father with a few strong words for what he did. He saw a lot of his mother in her and had nothing but respect for her.

DeeJay always looked at him throughly. He had dark skin, lots of hair who's length was always underestimated because of shrinkage, a broad chin and an extremely manly, hairy body. He shared their father's brown eyes and his personality was in one word, direct. He was very comfortable in speaking his mind and letting out his emotions thanks to his mother's caring and constant emotional support. It was like she was overcompensating but it made him a well rounded guy after all.

Dallo was always a bit jealous of DeeJay. He had both of his parents living and both of them loved him unconditionally, they lived in a pretty nice house and ate their meals together at the dinner table just like in the movies. Their family portraits were always decked out with their smiles and DeeJay's school work and art pieces were always put on display on the refrigerator by his mother. But Dallo never showed any of his jealousy to DeeJay and actually made a bit of a bond with him.

He was the one who fetched wood and helped DeeJay construct a model of their neighborhood for his art project. He always made DeeJay exchange chores with him so he could go to the markets with his mother to get stuff so he could try to wow her into liking him. DeeJay didn't mind it at all, he was more than happy to do the laundry instead of carrying dasheens that were the same weight as he was.

DeeJay also saw a lot of him and his life situations in Dallo. I guess thats why it was easy for him to go to him. DeeJay was always the black sheep of the family because of his slight feminine traits and his family always pestered his father to make him stop. But his father didn't care and told them to fuck off. They both were the black sheep in their own ways and were especially sympathetic towards each other.

It was a night like many others in BerkVille. The wind blew a nice tropical breeze around the place strong enough to fly away with a small child. Clouds were a bit grey indicating heavy rainfall was afoot and dogs barked from a distance. In DeeJay's parents room was a door that led to their own balcony that you could stand in and see a beach not too far away from the house. DeeJay and Dallo stood on the balcony, beers in hand laughing and talking. I think I remember this night actually because DeeJay posted a picture of the beer with the caption "we getting drunk tonight!"

As DeeJay finished laughing at a joke Dallo made about their neighbor, he took a little while to breath in and out and convince himself one last time to tell Dallo and so he did. He took one more sip then began.

"Hey... um... can I talk to you about something?"

"Um, yeah, sure, what's up?"

DeeJay took a deep breath once more and cleared his throat.

"Over the last couple of months right-"

Dallo shook his head.

"Its been a bit tough living without our father and life has been a bit harder than usual to figure out"

"Oh I know! I still can't believe your mother even let me come down and stay for a while. I think she actually is growing accustom to me!"

"I kind of made her... I don't want you feeling like you're a black sheep! And plus you have all the right to be here for our father's send off!"

"Thank you!" He said smiling.

"But that's not exactly what I meant"

Dallo wore a confused face.

"There's been some other developments with me in general"

"Like?"

"I realized after a long thought process that I am gay and I started this relationship with this guy-"

"What the fuck?!" He yelled as he put down his drink and unleaned from on the balustrade.

"What?"

"What the fuck you talking about you're gay nigga?!"

"Yes, I really am I had to dig deep-"

"Nigga shut the fuck up and stop saying that shit! Listen, I too used to think I was gay and had some urges but that's not until I found God and grew. You're not gay so stop saying that shit! You're just growing into your body so your hormones are reacting in certain fucked up ways!"

"No, no like actually I know I'm gay I've had a boyfr-"

Dallo broke the Heineken bottle against the railing and pinned DeeJay down whilst holding it to his neck.

"Nigga you ain't gay! STOP SAYING THAT SHIT! If you ever say that shit again I'll fucking kill you! You hear me?!"

DeeJay, too scared to disobey shook his head and watched in shock as Dallo got off of him slowly. He was trembling more than a broken AC unit and could feel a panic attack on the rise just by his heart's intense speed. He stood up slowly and leaned over the railing and began breathing in and out as Dallo attempted to clean up the glass. That's when his mother walked in.

"You'll good?! I heard something break!" She said in a bit of a panic.

"Yeah, we're alright ma'am! I just dropped the bottle, my bad!"

"Oh okay! Use the dustpan instead of your hands and when you're done cleaning this up, you boys come inside! I just heard on the news that there was a home invasion around here!"

"Will do!" Dallo said as he went inside with her to get the dustpan.

DeeJay was so much in shock that he didn't even turn around to acknowledge what she had said. His face was blank and his eyes were red and spotting out big clumps of tears. He didn't even want to be himself anymore. It's like he wanted to be someone else but at the same time couldn't imagine being someone else if that makes sense.

After that he rarely spoke to Dallo. Especially because he had seen Dallo fooling around with his father's gun once and saw him smoking crack in the bathroom another time. So after Dallo went back to his country to begin his community college schooling, he blocked his number and wished that he never step foot back into Saint Lucia. Coming out can be the hardest and most tragic thing for someone in the LGBTQ. So tell me, if you were in DeeJay's situation at those moments, what would you have done differently?

I couldn't get over Dallo. Was he the murderer? I thought of this as I was suspended in animation whilst handing Gob the book. He drew me back into reality and I stood there for a second not knowing where I was. Once I made the delivery I made off right away for my house as I was still nervous about being at his home while his parents was there even though it was only his father.

As I walked out of the house and lower down the street a car stopped next to me and Gob's mother assembled out of it. I said good afternoon and gave her a warm smile but she looked back at me with fury in her eyes. "I don't know what you are... but I want you to stay away from my son"

I stood there once more suspended in animation. Did she figure out my secret? I couldn't mouth a single sentence and just watched as she got back into her car and drove away. But then it hit. If she had known she would've told Gob and he would've broken up with me by now. But she definitely had her suspicions. I was on her most wanted list and could tell there was a target on my back.

But as I gripped the voice tape that was in my hands I remembered everything I had heard on the this last tape. I looked about and spotted a broken beer bottle on the ground and saw how it perfectly matches the one strew onto the front of this tape. And as I stared up into the sky it was almost like I saw DeeJay looking back at me. Then I remembered my promise. Right now wasn't about me and this silly feud with my boyfriend's mother. Right now is about figuring out who killed DeeJay and why. I hoped that the others had started listening to their assigned tapes and began the long walk back home, briefly stopping to purchase a soda.

"What could've possibly happened to DeeJay?" I asked myself once again.

But as this question lingered in my mind the sheriff was still on the prowl. He had been stalking and following us and noticed that we went into the library for a bit a few hours ago. Why were we all meeting together? He staked out until we left and made sure we wasn't coming back by concealing himself behind his tinted car windows.

He stepped into the library and demanded that he was shown the camera footage for today. He skipped to the time stamp when we entered and watched until he had seen our every move. He saw the tapes, our scared expressions and our secretive talking. What the fuck were on those tapes? Was it evidence that could link us to the murder? Why did we each take a few of the tapes? What were we talking about?

Carson also looked a little too close to Dustin. Smitten even. Like they were in some alliance. Maybe? He looked at me and saw someone with determination and almost leadership drive. Was I the leader of this all? Was his suspicions right?

Before heading back to his car, he instructed the security to deliver the camera recordings to the station. In an effort to get himself going, he surveyed BerkVille like he was on the prowl for us. He grew agitated after that. Without the search warrant, he was unable to conduct any searches of our homes. The tapes would not be admissible in court if he broke into our homes and conducted a self-search. He was limited to sitting back and watching in the shadows for the time being.

The game's on motherfuckers. The stakes are high and we haven't even gotten to the final boss yet. You ready to play ball?
