Twenty two

"I don't know how to tell him...it's going to be so weird" Jimin whispered to Doo min when they where both in the kitchen sitting down peeling some oranges.

"I don't know sir but you can start by being honest" Ahjumma Doo min said and then she gave him a knowing look. "Totally honest!"

Jimin groaned. "But he's only ten. He won't really understand something like this. It's only going to confuse him"

Ahjumma Doo min gave him a reassuring smile. "Mintae is a smart kid. I'm sure he's going to understand a lot better than you think"

Jimin gulped and looked through the window at his son who was outside the garden flying a kite. Sighing, he left the kitchen and headed to his room where he retrieved an old box tucked away inside his closet. He had never touched that box until today but after he gathered enough courage, he went to the garden where Mintae was.

The boy was immersed in flying his kite but he stopped as soon as Jimin called his name. He paused and looked at him.

"Mintae, come here. There's something i have to tell you!"he said

His voice was shaky and he wondered how he could still manage to stand through all the tension. Mintae flashed a boxy smile and ran up to him after placing his kite at a safe corner. But once they where together, the boy noticed his sad expression.

"Appa, are you okay?" he asked in a small gentle voice.

Jimin forced a smile on his face.

"I'm fine son!" He held his hand. "Can we just sit down together? There's something i need to discuss with you"

They both sat at the chairs in front of a wide table painted white. As they sat, Jimin thought deeply about what he was going to say and how he was going to go about it. He hoped and prayed that  Mintae was going to understand because truly, he was just a kid.

Gulping, he opened the box and started to spread out some pictures on the table. Mintae looked at them curiously.

"Appa, what's this?" He asked.

Jimin chewed his lower lip "There's a confession Appa has to tell you. You where probably too young to remember but a few years ago, Appa looked different"

Mintae still looked confused so Jimin picked up an old photo of him when he was Jessica leaning against a wall, two hands on her hips.

"I used to look like this person!"

Mintae scratched his head. "Appa, I don't understand!"

Jimin sighed dejectedly. This was pure torture. He wished this conversation would come to an abrupt end. How do you explain to your child that you are transgender.

He coughed out nervously, palms sweating.

"I mean that i was this person!" He said pointing to the image.

"Before i became me now"

Mintae widened his eyes. "You where a woman?"

Jimin found himself sighing in relief but at the same time, bowing his head in utter shame.

"Yes!" he responded.

Mintae looked at him with an unreadable expression.

"Sometimes you looked different!" he whispered after a few agonizingly silent seconds

"I did!" Jimin muttered. "You are still so young to understand..."

"Why?"

Jimin was taken aback by how serious Mintae suddenly looked, his dark eyes piercing his that he reminded him so much of Taehyung at that very moment. He shook vigorously. Now wasn't the time to think about that ass hole. Right now, he had to satisfy the curiosity of a ten year old so he spoke.

"Well, because i was uncomfortable in my own skin. I wasn't happy with myself. I felt suffocated and i wanted to do so many things before. Things i couldn't do as a girl"

Jimin sighed. "I know it sounds crazy but believe me baby. I didn't do it for my self interest or because i hated being female. I would have lived the rest of my life that way probably be married now, have plenty of kids, live a normal boring life but in the end, i will still be unhappy because i wouldn't be me"

"I would feel terrible and one day, people will find my body hanging from the ceiling"

Mintae gasped and Jimin smiled apologetically

"I'm sorry Mintae. I just got carried away...i shouldn't have said that but i just wanted you to understand why i decided to live as a man and not as a woman. I did it to be able to live on. Now, I'm content. I'm happy with myself. I never realized it before but now I'm most happy because i had you"

Mintae didn't say anything. It bothered Jimin a bit but he had to go on as his eyes lingered on an old photo of him and Taehyung arms linked as they smiled fully at the camera, teeth exposed. He had no idea why he still kept a picture of the two of them after all these years. Looking at the picture made his heart clench but he picked it up and showed it to Mintae.

"Do you recognize the man in the picture?"

Mintae peered closely at it and nodded. "It's Mr Taehyung!"

Jimin nodded impressed with his son's ability to remember names of people he only met once.

"But why is he with old you?"

Jimin gathered enough courage. "Because he used to be my boyfriend..."

There was an uneasy silence before Jimin continued.

"Mintae, Taehyung's your father.

Jimin watched the boy loose color to his face. This was too much news to tell a ten year old.

"I have two dads?" Mintae whispered to himself under his breath but then gazed at Jimin with accusing eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me I had another Dad. I thought it was just you and me!"

He looked pretty angry, his eyes reflecting dissapointment and Jimin couldn't bear it.

"Taehyung was away for years. He just came back. I couldn't tell him about you because he had travelled abroad and I didn't see him for a long long time"

Mintae looked heartbroken. "He doesn't know I'm his son?"

Jimin gulped. "Well, he does now!"

Mintae groaned. "But why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought he would take you away from me after he finds out about me"

Tears started falling down his eyes.

"I'm sorry Mintae. I'm sorry for not telling you about Taehyung. I'm sorry for not being a perfect parent for you. I'm sorry for not having time for you. Because of this I messed up your child hood"

He paused when he felt small hands on his face wiping his tears. He looked up and saw his son smiling at him.

"Don't cry Appa. Don't cry. I don't hate you. I don't care who you are. All I know is you are my Appa and I love you"

Then he wrapped his small arms around him. Jimin's heart was filled with so much happiness. What did he ever do to deserve a child like Mintae?

"I love you too Mintae" Jimin breathed out.

They pulled apart and Mintae wiped his cheeks some more.

"I really want to meet my other Dad but what if he doesn't like me?" he pouted and Jimin chuckled.

"You've met before haven't you? Did it seem like he didn't like you then?"

Mintae shook his head blushing.

"So there you go! besides have you seen yourself? you're so adorable, why won't anyone like you?"

He squeezed his cheek cooing after him and Mintae blushed but then looked thoughtful.

"But do you like other Dad and does other Dad like you?" he suddenly blurted.

That question hit him hard making him speechless for a while until he found his voice.

"That's between Taehyung and me" he said in a dry tone.

Mintae just shrugged and ran towards his kite.

"When will i see him?" he yelled out

"Very soon!" Jimin answered and just sat watching his bundle of joy looking happy while flying his kite. He hadn't felt it was going to be so easy but he was happy he wasn't disgusting to his son. At least not now.

That night Jimin put Mintae to bed and watched him sleep for a few minutes before he decided to leave his bedroom. He met Doo min in the living room and she smiled kindly

"That kid is such a brave child!"

"Brave but naive. He still doesn't understand. When he lives longer, he will"

Doo min stared at him "Understand what?"

Silence

"Understand what it's like to have a parent like me" Jimin finally answered.

He heaved. "I'm not ready to expose the truth about me to the world right now. It would affect my son and i don't want that!"

"Don't talk like that Jimin besides he's strong!"

Jimin scoffed. "You tend to forget the society where you live in. They don't take kindly to anything being different or far from the norm. I really don't want my child living as a total outcast because of me."

Doo min shook her head pitifully staring at the determined look in her Master's face so at that moment, she was short of words.

"If you say so sir. I'll be retiring to bed. Is there anything you need?"

"I'm fine Ahjumma. Thank you" Jimin said with a kind smile.

The old woman bowed her head and left. No sooner had she left than his phone buzzed in his pant pocket. He took it out and saw it was a message. He opened it and read it.

I'll be coming over to your place tomorrow to meet my son. We have a lot to discuss

He wished his phone was a paper so he could crumple it and throw it away. How could a single harmless text make him so mad! Oh wait, he knows why. It was because it was a text written by Kim fucking Taehyung. He sighed. He was already dreading tomorrow. Unable to sleep, he downed four bottles of soju and when he finally grew tipsy, he found himself crawling into his bed and sleeping off the minute his head hit the pillow.

Thanks for reading. I wanted to write more but I felt a bit tired so I'll just end it here. Till next time!
