[02] NEW HOME

When Brina woke, she was greeted by an extremely bright white light. A small groan escaped her at the brightness, her hand going up to cover the light. As she brought her hand up, Brina's heart nearly stopped at how her hand now looked. No longer was it covered by her slick green scales or her sharp talons or even the webs connecting all her fingers.

No, instead, creamy pale skin replaced the scales, the webs connecting her fingers were completely gone allowing her to wiggle her fingers individually, and the talons no longer grazed the edge of her fingertips.

In a state of shock, Brina wiggled her fingers around, bringing her other hand up, seeing the same result. Rubbing her hands together, the siren was amazed by the softness of her flesh. The scales that once resided along her body were rough, meant to protect her from sharp objects, this skin was soft, as if inviting sharp objects to cut her.

After a solid two minutes of admiring and playing with her fingers, the siren brought her hands to her cheeks, rubbing over the newly soft skin. Running her fingertips over her face, Brina purred at the feel of her familiar silky hair. At least that had not changed.

It was as she was running her fingers through her hair that Brina realized there was no pain. The transformation was complete. In a motion quicker than light, Brina snapped her head toward where her tail once resided.

In the place her long and sharp tail once was, there was now a pair of squishy flesh legs. Brina furrowed her eyebrows at the sight of grey pants over her legs, the siren not knowing what they were called but recognizing it as the outer layer of protection humans often wore. Rubbing her legs together, Brina let out a puff of air at the gentle feel of the sweatpants.

Trailing her fingers over the pants, Brina froze upon reaching a symbol printed onto the right pocket. The symbol was a simple rocket ship with the word Life printed inside, something that any human would have been able to read, but a true jigsaw for a creature such as Brina.

Moving away from the symbol, Brina began bringing her hands up, running them over the fabric of the black shirt. The siren stopped when she got to her breasts, frowning when she felt some sort of hard fabric constricting any movement of that area.

In Brina's mind, the pants and the shirt were okay, but not this odd piece of constricting fabric. She did not like how this made her chest feel, she would take this off as soon as she figured out exactly what it was.

Just as Brina began reaching around, trying to take it off, a movement coming from her legs swept her attention away. Glancing down, Brina gasped as toes wiggled back and forth in the spot her sharp fins used to be. Sitting up, Brina found that she was able to fold her legs in a manner which allowed her to grab and play with her toes.

'So this is what looking like a human feels like.' Brina thought to herself curiously, slowly releasing her toes, keeping her legs folded over the other.

Brina once again grasped her shirt, pulling it out, attempting to examine it fully. It was as she was doing this that the bed Brina sat upon let out a small squeak at her movement. With a surprised cry, Brina released her shirt, looking down toward the bed.

The siren's mouth popped open in shock, Brina not understanding how she did not notice this earlier. What was this thing she was on? It was soft, so tender, so lavish.

Brina was stroking the comforter of the queen-sized bed affectionately, her eyes flickering to take in every single detail. Slowly, her hand still stroking the bed, Brina allowed herself to study her surroundings, her breath catching in her throat at what she saw.

It was still odd, breathing in air instead of water, so much so Brina found herself coughing slightly as her breath caught in her throat. This was all so overwhelming, the new sensations, the new sights, the new appearance. It truly was mind-boggling.

With wide eyes, Brina looked at the bright dangling lights over her head, at the small couch just across from the bed, a door leading into a bathroom (not that Brina knew that), and finally, a small pool of water diagonal to her bed. Oddly enough, everything but the pool and her grey clothing was a piercing white color.

The pool was not very big, but it was big enough to allow Brina to swim around comfortably. Brina's eyes rested on the pool for a second longer than the other things, her nose catching the scent of salt it was giving off. This was a salt water pool.

For a second, Brina considered going to the pool, but she was not stupid enough to think it would lead out of whatever place she was undoubtedly trapped in. Ripping her eyes away from the pool, Brina finally noticed the huge glass wall at the front of the room.

Narrowing her eyes, Brina saw that outside the clear glass was some sort of human laboratory. Computers, tables, wires of all sorts, chemistry equipment, anything, and everything needed to conduct experiments lurked just outside the glass wall. Tilting her head, Brina looked at all the scary-looking equipment, her heart beginning to speed up.

What was this place? Where had the humans taken her?

In Brina's opinion, it felt like a dam had broke behind her eyes. A pressure building up in tune with her speeding heart, a pressure which was finally released. Brina recognized the feeling as crying, but in the sea, when you cried the ocean carried your tears away. Now, the tears were free to fall and wet your cheeks.

Reaching up, Brina touched her soft skin, a teardrop landing on her hand. Pulling it away so she could see, she frowned at the salty tear. This was all too new and terrifying, and she no longer had her talons, but perhaps...

Sniffling, Brina reached into her mouth, feeling around for the sharp incisors she called teeth. Unfortunately, with the transformation, her protruding teeth were no more.

Seeing as her teeth, her last form of defense was completely gone, Brina's sadness turned into raging anger. Anger that her sister was now by herself in the ocean, anger that the humans caught her, and anger that she was trapped here, in this prison.

However, that anger soon diminished as her hearing picked up on a sound. A rough dry sound of talking in a language that she was not familiar with, the language of the humans. Turning her head, Brina finally took notice of a small group of humans gathered just outside of her glass window, none of them looking at her.

Instead, they were talking to each other, no one in their group taking notice that their newest study subject was now awake.

Outside of the room holding Brina, a group of seven men and woman stood. All except one of them wore pristine white lab coats. Doctor Carlton Drake wore a dark suit, his Pakastanian heritage making him look all the better.

Carlton Drake stood with his hands folded neatly behind his back, talking with his group of scientists about the current experiment residing in the containment area to the side of them. His cocoa-colored eyes drank in the information his lead scientific group was spewing out, processing it faster than anyone would ever believe.

"The real question here is how did the subject transform herself human and can she switch back?" Dora Skirth said over the arguing, fixing her glasses.

It was true, Carlton Drake, Dora Skirth, and the other five scientists on this assignment were present when the security team arrived with the capsule holding the siren. To say everyone was shocked when Carlton Drake opened the capsule, only for everyone to be struck with the sight of a beautiful sleeping naked woman would be an understatement.

Now, after Carlton ordered for her to be clothed, they all stood around waiting for her to regain consciousness, discussing different hypothesis as to why she had legs.

Doctor Dora Skirth had noticed from the second the siren had got here, Carlton Drake had been uncharacteristically happy. After the first three hours, it was finally Doctor Skirth who forced him to stop watching the siren sleep and join the discussion. After all, Carlton Drake had the brightest mind here and, not that she would ever say it to his face, she thought it was pretty creepy for him to be watching the siren sleep.

In Dora's mind, Carlton had been watching the siren as if she was the answer to all his problems. As if she was something he had been waiting for all his life.

What Doctor Skirth did not know; however, was that she was correct. Carlton Drake had been waiting for a siren, ever since he was a boy.

Leaning back, Carlton Drake sighed. Everything was finally beginning to come together.

Tilting her head, Brina listened to their words, trying desperately to interpret what any of it meant. Unfortunately, she understood none of it, only sensing that they were arguing. Sniffing the air, Brina attempted to smell for anything familiar, but all she was able to catch was the dense smell of the containment cell and the salty pool.

Realizing she was going to get nowhere with this method, Brina hesitantly placed her right foot on the ground. Using her arms, Brina silently prepared herself to stand up, hoping that walking was as easy as the humans made it look.

From in the lab, a male scientist standing next to Dora Skirth noticed movement out of the corner of his eye. This man was named, Doctor Quinton Callahan, a formidable scientist, among the top five of the entire Life Foundation. He along with Dora Skirth were Carlton Drake's favorites, the both of them given the most opportunities by the CEO.

Quinton Callahan was a relatively young scientist, not as young as Carlton Drake, only a few years older, but still young for a scientist. He was a decent looking man, standing just over six-foot, his eyes and hair a deep brown, and a ringing Scottish accent that women simply died for.

Quinton was born and bred in Bathgate, a small town in Scotland before he moved to the U.S. in his early twenties. Despite spending over ten years in the States, Quinton's accent never wained.

Turning his head, Quinton took off his reading glasses, setting them down next to his clipboard on the counter. Carlton Drake and the other scientists were still in deep conversation, none of them noticing Quinton, whose gaze was trained on the inside of the containment center. Right where the subject was.

Quinton watched, his mind reeling at the now awake subject. Her eyes had been closed before, so no one had been able to see the brilliant blues eyes that reminded him so much of a storm. While she was unconscious, Carlton Drake, himself, and Dora Skirth had been the ones to take her vitals and give her a small checkup.

All they had gotten from that was that her heartbeat was slightly quicker than that of a human and oddly enough, she was cold-blooded. To say they were all fascinated was an understatement, especially Carlton who was now obsessed with her.

Placing his hands in the pockets of his white lab coat, Quinton slowly walking forward, his eyes unable to stray from the siren, placing her feet on the ground.

Brina breathed in deeply nodding to herself and standing up in a quick motion. From the second she was standing, it felt odd.

Why did she feel so high, why did her legs feel like... jelly?

She was standing for a total of two seconds, Brina taking a single step forward, her eyes widening as her leg shook, and before she could stop herself she went flying toward the floor. Brina braced herself with her hands, her arms breaking her fall. The siren growled in frustration from her spot on the floor, her hair spread over her body.

Doctor Callahan took another step forward his eyes wide with concern.

"Hey, Mr. Drake." He called, his voice lost in the wave of argument coming from the group of scientists.

Carlton did not hear him, rubbing his forehead with his fingers. "Okay, so she is a coldblooded animal, that much we can be sure of. The question is, does she respond more to the nature of amphibians, reptiles, or mammals?"

With a fierce growl, Brina pushed herself up, getting onto her feet once again. This time, though she was shaky, she was becoming more used to the feeling. Her legs wobbled, Brina holding her arms out as she shook back and forth.

Doctor Callahan watched as the siren bit her lip in focus, analyzing the way her legs shook as she stood. It was not quite like watching a newborn baby learning to walk, but it was very similar. When a baby was learning to walk, it was a struggle on their muscles. With this siren, her muscles were already formed and even appeared to be quite strong; however, the struggle with her was simply the fact that she had probably never walked before.

Tilting his head toward everyone, his eyes met Doctor Skirth's. "I am gettin' the sense that she has never walked before." Doctor Callahan's words not only caught the attention of Dora but of every single scientist in the room.

Carlton swiveled to face Doctor Callahan so fast, Quinton thought he had whiplash. "What makes you say that?" His voice was powerful, filled with nothing but curiosity.

Raising a brow at his boss, Quinton cleared his throat, sharing a small look with Dora. Doctor Callahan said nothing, simply pointing at the containment center. Carlton along with the rest of his scientific crew followed Quinton's finger, their gaze landing on the wobbling Brina.

With a look of fierce determination, Brina took a shaky step forward. The siren huffed, doing everything in her power to keep balance. Swallowing, Brina took another step, her arms held in front of her as she slowly but surely began walking.

Carlton was left watching the siren hobble around with wonder. Her pants were slightly too big along with her shirt, but Carlton wanted his newest subject to be as comfortable as possible.

Everyone had gone quiet, no one daring to talk as they watched the siren learn to walk. A smile ghosted over Carlton's lips, his eyes never faltering as he watched her. He couldn't believe he missed her waking up, he wanted to see what her first reaction was.

After a few minutes, Brina had successfully gotten the hang of walking, finding that when she focused it was slightly similar to swimming. Bringing her hand up, Brina rubbed her hand over her cheek, unable to believe how soft she currently was. While rubbing her cheek, the siren slowly walked around the room, taking it all in.

Carlton could not help but compare the stories his mother used to tell him about sirens to the one standing in front of him currently. If there was one thing his mother got right, it sure was the mystifying beauty. She had to be the prettiest thing he had ever seen.

Clearing his throat, Carlton crossed his arms over his chest. Carlton had never been particularly built, though he did have the body of a runner, something he was rather proud of. Slim muscles made up his body, the male not quite tall, but not short either, he was somewhere in between. Despite all of this, Carlton had always been the smartest and the most creative out of everyone growing up, and it only paid off after he discovered the gene therapy that tripled the life span of pancreatic cancer patients. Not to mention how he built the entire Life Foundation from scratch.

"Hello," Carlton said it loudly, Brina jumping and nearly losing her balance. After regaining it, the siren turned her head, her stormy eyes meeting the melted chocolate that was Carlton's gaze.

The second both people had met eyes, it was like time had stopped for them. Many people when they met gazes with Carlton Drake felt threatened, for they knew he was a dangerous man and he simply gave off a bad vibe. However, when Brina met his gaze, she felt none of this, she only felt a sense of longing, but for what, she did not know.

Carlton Drake nearly froze on the spot when he finally took account for how very blue her eyes were. Blue and stormy, and all around incredible, just like her.

In a curious manner, Brina took a few steps toward the glass, her eyes scaling the length of Carlton Drake. It was apparent that he was, as Brina understands it, the 'alpha' of everyone in the room. For sirens, anyone considered a boss was 'the alpha', the one in charge.

As Brina walked toward the glass, Carlton furrowed his brows when he saw she was making no indication of stopping before the glass. The realization that Brina did not know exactly what glass was hit him too late as before he could stop her, Brina hit the glass with a loud thud. Doctor Skirth gasped, bringing her hands to her lips as Brina hit the glass, Carlton wincing and looking at the siren worriedly.

However, his worry diminished when he saw that she was not hurt, but confused. Brina pursed her lips, her hands touching the glass, studying the material as if it were the most interesting thing in the world.

'What in the world?' Brina thought to herself, never having seen anything like this in the ocean.

Using slow steps, as not to startle the siren, Carlton found himself walking until the top of his shoes were touching the edge of the glass wall. Seemingly, on its own accord, Carlton's right hand lifted, the palm resting lightly on the glass, Brina's smaller hand touching just on the other side.

He wondered what her hand would feel like to touch, to hold. Would it be as soft as it looked? Subconsciously, Carlton could not help but think back to the silly vow he made as a child, the vow that he would marry a siren one day.

Labeling it as a ridiculous and ludacris thought, Carlton, got back to the matter at hand.

"Welcome to your new home," Carlton breathed, Brina, looking up and meeting Carlton's gaze once again.

They were so close, just separated by a piece of glass.

The two locked eyes for a few moments more, Brina not understanding what Carlton said, only knowing that she liked the lull his tone held. The scientists all watched the encounter, Callahan taking it upon himself to write down all of Brina's actions and responses.

Staring at him blankly, Brina tilted her head, blinking her eyes innocently. Carlton found himself smiling at the action, but the smile faded to a look of confusion when Brina stepped back, an irritated look resting on her face.

Reaching up her shirt, Brina grasped the piece of hard fabric that was keeping her breast locked in place. Carlton raised his eyebrows, watching the scene unfold, his eyes lingering on the hand under her shirt.

"Oh!" Dora exclaimed in surprise when Brina literally ripped the bra off her and brought it out from under the shirt.

Her along with the rest of the scientist's eye were wide, most of them unbelieving of her strength. Ripping a bra like that was not an easy thing for someone her size to do, perhaps she was much stronger than she looked. They would need to look into her strength as soon as they could.

"Well," Doctor Callahan laughed slightly. "It would also seem that she does not like to wear a bra."

Everyone's eyes were on Brina who had lost interest in gazing at the humans and was now exploring her little room more thoroughly by looking under the bed, the bra discarded on the floor by the window.

Carlton watched his siren look under the bed with a smile, taking his hands off the glass and folding them behind his back. "No," He clicked his tongue in agreement, following the siren's every movement. "She doesn't."
