Two
When I heard the word "cop", I didn't really think. I knew I had to get out of there before someone came around asking questions, questions I couldn't answer. Of course, not thinking lead to me making a mistake.
I waited for the evening rush before I headed back to the bar. It was dark and I didn't see a cop car anywhere in sight. Even still, I was nervous. I stayed outside for an hour and allowed midnight to pass by before I walked into the bar. I had changed clothes and wore my leather jacket with a hood. I had it pulled up to cover my face and my curly chocolate hair was slicked back into a braid. As long as I kept my head down, I blended in with the crowd, but my piercing blue eyes would give me away every time.
Heading for the bar, I kept my head down until Neil, my coworker, came over to me. "What can I get you?" He asked, not realizing who he was talking to.
"My bag," I said softly as I glanced up.
Neil was cute if you were into the rugged, biker type, but the shocked and confused look on his face really spoke to how air-headed he was. "Liv?" He asked shaking his head before leaning in. "You can't be here, the cops are looking for you."
I nodded and sighed, "I know, which is why I need my bag. My life is in there." Or the life I had created for myself was.
"A cop took it..." He said slowly and when I was about to ask what he meant, he added in, "I'm sorry Liv," before turning away.
Cursing under my breath, I shook my head and pushed off the bar. "Great," I hissed as I headed for the door. My mind was racing a mile a minute as I struggled to figure out what I would do now. That bag had my entire life in it: every penny I earned, backup IDs, and the work I had done in trying to get home.
Shoving the door open, I reached into my pocket to grab the keys to my motorcycle as I headed that way. What I wasn't expecting was to see a man in a suit, leaning against it. "Who the fuck do you think you are?" I snapped.
The man's gaze rose from the black leather book he had in his hands. "I could ask you the same question," he said as he raised the book - my book - into the air.
"That is not yours, give it back," I growled as I walked closer to him.
"Technically, it's the State's. It was seized at a crime scene." I was so blinded by rage, I never considered how he had gotten it. "Detective Ethan Kane, I have some questions for you." Crossing my arms over my chest, I glared at him, not saying a word. "So, what should I call you? Liv Donin, Laiken Herwitz, Lily Gouse, Lana Bergson?" At each name, he threw one of my fake IDs on the dirt in front of my feet. When I still didn't reply, he stood up straight to his full height just over 6ft. "And those are just the ones in the bag. I also know you by Lynna Baptista, Lainey Rosser, and Liddy Rheil."
Closing my eyes, I sighed as I pinched the bridge of my nose and looked down. "Leena," I sighed as I heard the three lives I had already had to run from for one reason or another.
Detective Kane nodded once before taking a step closer, "Should I even pretend like that's your name?"
"Believe what you want, it was the name I was given at birth."
"And where was that? I'm assuming not around here with that accent of yours."
My eyes narrowed as I clenched my hand into a fist. "How dare you! Do not speak to me like that. Ever realize you are the one who has the accent to me." I spat as I pushed my hood down. "Can we just get this over with? Are you going to try to arrest me, or let me go?"
"Try?" Detective Kane almost sounded amused. "If I wanted you arrested, you'd be behind bars. I've been looking for you for far too long not to get a minute alone with you." I frowned and he continued to talk. "You don't recognize me, do you?"
I huffed, "Should I?"
He sighed, almost as if he was disappointed. "I guess I shouldn't hold it against you. I was an Officer then, the one you ran from in the hospital." I tilted my head to the side as I studied him. I barely remembered that day, but he had changed over the last year. His hair had grown longer, unkempt, and he had a 5 o'clock shadow. "I should thank you. With your little crime spree, I was promoted and assigned to your case. You sure have kept things interesting Leena." He chuckled as he added in, "Leena what, by the way?"
"Nothing."
"Leena Nothing? Doesn't really roll off the tongue, does it?"
Agent Kane must have thought he was so clever. I rolled my eyes and sighed, "I do not have a last name. Not one you kind could pronounce anyways."
"My kind?" He echoed.
A third voice joined the conversation, this one a deep, unnatural moan. "Human."
Chills ran down my spine as I slowly began to observe the empty parking lot around us. "Get out of here, Agent Kane," I warned, my eyes constantly scanning.
"Not happening. Tell your partner to step out here." Agent Kane sighed, sounding annoyed instead of terrified like he should be.
There was a soft tapping sound, almost like heels on concrete, but more thunderous. "Lady Asix'Corrah-ha..." Out from the shadows stepped out an insect-like creature standing almost 9 feet tall on four legs. His lower half was covered in a hard exoskeleton which lead to his four, spike-covered arms. His torso was covered by lava rock armour which gave off a red glow. "I have looked forward to killing your kind for a very long time."
My gaze raised to the towering creature and I sighed, "And here I was trying to avoid yours."
"What the fuck is that?" Agent Kane protested from behind me as he took out his weapon.
Raising my hand, black claws slowly started to grow from my nails. "A Torik demon." I said as I glanced back to Agent Kane. He gasped as my iris' shifted into slits and teeth sharpened into fangs. "Get out of here Kane. There's a location in the book, page 36, meet me there tomorrow morning." Kane reached for his gun and I shook my head, "I said go!" I shouted and he jumped. "I will be fine," I added in softer a moment later.
There was a pause, but Kane nodded, keeping his gun out as he slowly backed up and my attention was back on the Torik demon. "Shall we dance?"
