Five
"You sure this is it?" Kane asked as he carried my backpack and duffle bag to the car. I nodded as I managed to get myself into the front seat of the black SVU. "How do you have so little?" He objected as he tossed it into the trunk before closing it.
I shrugged as I did up my seat belt. "There is not much I need from this world," I explained to him, speaking louder than I needed to, not realizing he had come around to my side to check up on me.
"All set?" He asked his voice in my ear which made me jump. "Sorry," he chuckled, "Just want to make sure you're okay."
I motioned him away as I rolled my eyes. "I told you that I was fine. I even could have carried my bag."
Kane shut my door before walking around to the driver's side. "I am not letting someone who fought a demon yesterday, carry her own bags. You should be resting anyways." I opened my mouth to protest, but he motioned me to stop as he said what I had told him a million times now. "Ya, ya, ya, you heal fast. I don't care." He huffed as he started the car. "You never did explain that."
"Correct," I agreed, not saying more.
Kane started to drive as he continued to protest, "You don't explain a lot, do you?"
I didn't know if that was completely true, but there were some things better left unsaid. "It is a long drive. If you have questions, it is a good time to ask. I will answer what I can," and what I wanted to.
The beginning of the drive was quiet, though I had offered to answer questions, he seemed unsure what to even ask. It made sense, he was about to visit a new world, completely different than the one he knew, and speaking from experience, it wasn't easy to do. "Do you care if I turn on the radio?" Kane finally asked to break the silence.
Shrugging, I glanced from the window to him. "Does not matter to me."
He paused for a second before laughing a bit, "I don't even know if there is music where you're from. I don't even know what to call your world."
His nerves were finally starting to show. "There is music, beautiful music," I told him in a soft tone. "It is all live, all different depending on where you go. The Elves always play lively wind-instrument music that enchants you, where the dwarves... It brings you peace. It is deep and slow and sometimes there are no instruments at all."
Kane finally smiled a bit, continuing to focus on the road. "It sounds wonderful, as long as you forget there is also mermaids who can sing you to your death."
"There are dangers in your world too." I said gently before adding in, "Our world has no a name really, but we are going to the continent of Prozox, which is basically North America. If we are able to get to my world, we should be just outside of Aken. It is a large coastal city and I may have a connection or two there who can help us out." I explained to him.
Kane went quiet again for the next few kilometres as he debated asking his next question. Every once and a while he would glance at me, open his mouth before deciding to close it again. He finally got the courage after a turn onto a different road. "How are we getting to Pro-z-in-?"
"Prozox," I corrected him first which made him frown. "Simply put, I am going to try to use magic and really just hope it works. I know I was found around Portland where I arrived here, I am hoping there is still a thin spot between the worlds and that I can control for us to pass back through."
Kane nodded his head skeptically. "That sounds like a lot of hoping."
"Magic is not a science and after a year and a half, it may not be possible to get home." I would be the first to admit that this was a long shot.
Kane was quiet as he went to pass a slow moving minivan before he spoke again, "I know exactly where you were found. You weren't in Portland, you were found on the bank of the Columbia River, just outside of a small town. We're going to pull over soon for gas, I'll pull out the map then." Kane said before leaning forward and turning the radio on. I guess we were done talking for now.
