Fifty-Three

Her words haunted me as the sun finally brightened our tent, the darkness was over. I attempted to slide out of bed without waking up Mylo but failed. "Leena?" He groaned, his voice revealing how tired he was as he reached out for my hand. "Where are you going?" He mumbled as he noticed I was sitting up, already dressed.

"The sorcerer, she's coming for me in a day."

"She? It's a woman? How do you know?" Mylo dwelled on the unimportant details.

That wasn't an easy question to answer, but my aching body was my proof that it was real. "We need to talk to Ethan before it's too late."

Mylo was quickly awake and sitting up, asking for me to pass him his pants, his eyes locking onto the large bruise on my shoulder. "What are you going to do? What are you going to tell Ethan?"

"The truth," I said seriously as I stood up and offered him my hand, "Are you coming with me?"

He nodded, taking my hand as he finished pulling his shirt over his head. "You know I'd go anywhere with you. Just tell me what I need to do."

With him standing, I sighed as I glanced up at Mylo and squeezed his hand, "I need you to get me back to Earth, back to that other world where I'm powerless."

Kane stared at me from across the table, his elbows resting on it as he finally let out a sigh and rested his face in his hands. "What if it doesn't work? You said you think she'd be weak if you left. How do you know?" Glancing to Mylo, he slowly nodded and I sighed as I pulled back the shoulder of my shirt. I cringed as the fabric of my shirt brushed against the bruise and Kane stood up straight, "What happened, are you alright? Let me get a healer."

I shook my head and waved him off, "It's just a bruise, it happened in my sleep." Kane frowned and I knew I had to explain myself more. "I had a dream, the more vivid I had ever experienced. I heard a woman calling for me, I knew her voice. I was surrounded by guards, humans with swords. They were yelling and I remember her telling me to save her. I-I killed them, all of them. They had managed to get a few attacks in, but it didn't matter. I woke up with this, right where one hit me before I ripped his throat out." Kane stared at me with wide, horrified eyes. "She thanked me for saving her and promised she would come tomorrow and do the same for me. She thinks she's protecting me, saving me from this life. If I don't leave, she'll kill everyone here. I can only hope without our connection, she'll be weak enough for someone else to take down."

We stood in silence for a moment before Kane motioned for me to cover back up. Mylo helped me and ran a hand along my back, whispering sweet nothings into my ear in attempts to get me to relax. "What if we make a trap, lure her here and then try to kill her? We have to try something else before just shipping you back to Earth, alone."

Glancing to Mylo, I smiled faintly, "I won't be going alone. Mylo's already agreed to come with me. The only thing here now for him is his sister and we both know you'll look after her. My immortality doesn't work the same on Earth, we can be normal there."

"We?" Kane rolled his eyes, "Mylo, you're going to go to another world, give up everything you have here for a girl?"

Mylo's jaw set and he shook his head, "Didn't you do the same, Ethan? You followed her here, I'm following her back. She can't go alone."

"You realize how insane this all is, right?"

I nodded and sighed, leaning against Mylo. "I do, but until you have a better idea?"

"I do, we get you out of here, set up a trap. Use you as bait and when she shows up, we kill her, together. Once that problem is solved, things go back to normal and we start abolishing slavery again." He nodded as if he was thinking through his plan, "Easy, let's get a team working on this. Get Cora and the rest of the council." Kane was quick to bark out orders, not wanting to hear what we had to say. If he thought this worked, there was no point in arguing with him. I didn't want to leave my home, but it was better than getting everyone I cared about killed.

Despite what Mylo and I both said, Kane took his time and told everyone their job and responsibility for the ambush. Thankfully, Mylo managed to convince Kane to allow Cora to come in and get some updates for the mages. If Kane's plan failed, then Mylo and I wouldn't have time for goodbyes.

We kept Plan B a secret. While Kane and Thalian met for the elves roll, Mylo and I took some time for ourselves. The reality of the situation was sinking in for the both of us. While we could talk and pretend that there was nothing here for us, there was everything. Our lives, family, and a place where we could be ourselves.

Magic didn't exist on Earth, we would be leaving behind our identities. New ones were easy enough to come by, but knowing I wouldn't be coming back would be harder. I would need a job, a home. I couldn't be on the run from the law this time.

Things were so quickly changing and I didn't know how I felt about it; at least I had Mylo.
