Chapter 4

Several hours passed, with Sasuke again sitting alone in the cold room. The quietness and constant throbbing of his leg was starting to get to him.

His leg hadn't been treated at all, only tightly wrapped in a bandage. The gash was open and inflamed underneath. Left like this, it would likely get infected, and he might lose his entire leg.

He knew now that he had a large open cut on his forehead, and it stung badly, though he hadn't felt it before.

Sasuke tapped his good foot on the floor, trying to create some new type of noise to keep him from going mad. He contemplated ways to escape, though none were very practical. He tried to keep from thinking about Kaydee, though he wasn't very successful.

When the door finally opened, he was actually relieved for a change, though he knew he might be facing more torment.

Sakura, Naruto, and the masked man entered the room. They lined up in an orderly fashion in front of him.

Naruto stepped forward. "You'll be coming with us. We need a few questions answered." He cut the ropes binding him to the chair, leaving on the ones tying his hands behind his back. "Kakashi, help me lift him."

Both Naruto and Kakashi grabbed his arms and hauled Sasuke up, his left leg dangling uselessly. They dragged him through the hallway, leading him to a room at the very end. Sakura followed a few paces behind.

Upon entering, Sasuke was pushed into yet another wooden chair. He looked about the room. It was plain, with silver metal walls. There were no furnishings other than a large metal table in the center and a few chairs. An object draped with a white sheet lay in the center of it, but he couldn't make out what it was.

At the head of the table stood a woman, dressed imposingly in her impeccable police uniform, with her long blond hair tied in two pigtails at the nape of her neck. A diamond like mark adorned her forehead.

The woman assessed him with her honey brown eyes. "So, you're the famous criminal of the underground, Uchiha Sasuke. Don't look like much to me. You look pretty pitiful, actually, with that useless leg of yours. I'm surprised it's taken us so long to catch you."

"He's quite difficult though." Kakashi muttered. "I swear, this one doesn't know when he's lost. You should have seen the fight he put up yesterday. He probably would have gotten away, too, if someone hadn't gone to...ahh...more drastic measures." He glanced at Sakura, who ignored him.

Sasuke kept his face blank and emotionless, staring cooly at the woman in front of him.

She stared right back. "Well, it looks like you won't break easily, if you haven't broken already. However, we do have a trump card to play, if it comes to it. Anyhow, let's get started with the interrogation. Ibiki!"

A man dressed in a black trench coat entered the room. Two long scars ran down his face. He slowly walked to stand in front of Sasuke. Pulling up a chair from the corner, he sat down in front of him. "Hello there, Mr. Uchiha. Pleased to meet you. My name is Ibiki Morino. This lovely woman here is Lady Tsunade, chief policewoman, and these three are the exceptional team of officers who captured you: Sakura Haruno, Naruto Uzumaki, and Kakashi Hatake. I'll be asking you a few questions today, and I'd like you to answer them as honestly as possible."

Sasuke stared at him boredly, slouching in his seat. "Shoot."

Ibiki grinned. "I like you. I think we'll get along well, eh?"

Sasuke blatantly ignored him. "Get on with it."

"Well...why don't we start off with some of the offenses you've committed. The robbery of Zen Bank, of about 500,000 yen. About two years ago. That was you?"

There was no point in lying, Sasyke thought. They obviously knew exactly who was behind each crime, and were just testing him. "Uh-huh."

"The fire set at the loan office, almost a year ago."

"That was me."

"The assault on two officers, during which you broke both of their arms, stole their weapons, and used them illegally? Three years ago?"

"Yep."

"The arson in the weaponry unit for the Konoha above ground police force that destroyed a whole arsenal seven months ago?"

"I'm kinda proud of that one."

"The vandalization of our government building about five months ago?"

"That was fun."

Then it came. "The murder of Kushina Uzumaki four years ago, on April 19?"

Sasuke shook his head. "Wasn't me. Never heard of her."

Ibiki pulled a picture out of his pocket. Shoving it in front of Sasuke's face, he questioned, "Never seen her?"

Sasuke studied the picture. A smiling, beautiful woman stared back at him. Her natural red hair fell in an unbroken sheet to her waist, and her blue eyes peered out inquisitively. He had absolutely no clue who she was. "Nope."

"I see," Ibiki said, stowing the picture away. "However, we have eyewitnesses reporting to have seen you at the scene of the crime."

"First of all," Sasuke said monotonously. "Why are you only just confronting me about this?"

Ibiki's face hardened. "Because we've only just managed to catch you. It is surprising that at fourteen, however, you were able to take down an armed, fully trained policewoman, but that all goes to show how infamous you really are."

"That's all you're basing your conviction on?" Sasuke asked. "A few eyewitnesses?"

"Our eyewitnesses," Ibiki stressed. "Are people we trust unconditionally. Naruto himself is one of them. He attacked you soon after. You mean to tell me you've never seen him before this?"

Sasuke looked at Naruto in confusion. "How could he have seen me? I've never seen him before this. And I've never killed a person, much less the one you showed me."

Naruto glowered at him. "Shut up, scum. I know exactly what I saw."

"You saw me?" Sasuke asked. "Or a guy who looked like me? Or are you just trying to use me as an excuse?"

Naruto's eye twitched. "It was dark. But I'm positive it was you."

"Ha!" Sasuke shook his head. "Some police force you are. Incompetent officers who rely blindly on their senses rather than actual investigation."

Unexpectedly, Sakura kicked his left leg, causing him cry out, doubling over. Black spots danced in front of his vision, and he took deep breaths as so not to black out.

Sakura grabbed his chin, forcing his face up to hers. "Do you have a death wish? Do you want to end up like your little friend? I can arrange that, you know. I doubt anyone would protest."

"Shut up about Kaydee." Sasuke spoke through ground teeth.

"Do you miss her? Do you? I can show her to you! You can feel exactly how Naruto felt when he saw what had happened to his mother!" Sakura was shouting now. "Here she is! Look at her!" She yanked the cover off the table.

Sasuke stared in horror. It was...she was...

"Blrgh!" He leaned over and threw up. Her face, bloody and still, stared back at him through glassy eyes. Her white dress was now red.

Just like in my dream, he thought. He felt as though he was no longer attached to his body, like he was someone else watching the scene unfold from above.

Someone was speaking, and he forced himself to listen. "Now do you see? Do you feel it? His pain? My pain?"

Sasuke opened his mouth, but no words came out. Clenching his teeth, he forced himself to speak in a harsh whisper. "You--to a little girl--you! You monster! TO GET TO ME YOU KILLED HER! I'LL KILL YOU! JUST YOU WAIT!"

Ibiki stared at him coldly. "Get him out of here."

Kakashi and Naruto grabbed him by the arms, jerking him to his feet.

"And put him in one of my isolation cells. We'll deal with him later."

Sasuke thrashed in the grasp of his captors, but their grip was too strong. His leg protested his violent movements with spasms of pain that hit him one after the other. But he wasn't done speaking. "I swear I'll make each and every one of you pay. You'll regret every single choice you've made up to this point. I'll--"

"You won't be doing much of anything in your condition," Sakura said mockingly. She approached him and cupped his face. He retaliated by trying to bite her fingers.

She snorted, drawing back her hand and punching him in the face. "You're pathetic. Quit trying. Your days of being on top of the world are over. Just give up fighting, and give us the answers we want. You'll make life easier for all of us."

"The answers you want," Sasuke snapped. "Are the ones that aren't true."

"Well, have fun rotting away in a stinking cell, Uchiha," Tsunade said. "Naruto, don't feed him or give him anything to drink. Let him suffer."

"What about his leg, my lady?" Kakashi asked. "We won't want him dying of infection before we get anything out of him. He does have useful information on the underground."

Tsunade thought for a few moments. "I'll look at it tomorrow. Get going now."

"Yes ma'am," Naruto replied. "We'll take care of everything.
