Part 18: Panic Attacks and Surprises
(Shuichi's POV)
I wake up next to Kokichi, who is still sleeping. I stroke his hair while he sleeps. He really is adorable. "I'm sorry I couldn't..." Kokichi says. I freeze before realizing he's talking in his sleep. "It's my fault, goodbye." He keeps flinching in his sleep. "Ow!" He starts sweating profusely. He goes limp before hyperventilating. I start shaking him. "Sh-Shuichi!" Tears stream down his face.
"Kokichi!" I finally shake him awake. He jumps up and pulls me into a hug. He sobs and says my name over and over again. "Kokichi?" I ask concerned.
"I-I'm sorry, I just... had a bad dream." He wipes the tears from his eyes.
"Wanna tell me about it?"
"Not... Really..."
I hold him in my arms. "Are you okay now?"
"Y-Yeah, it was just so... real."
"I wasn't... hurting you in your dream, was I?"
"No, of course not, what makes you think that?"
"You kind of talk in your sleep."
"Oh." He looks at the floor. "I might tell you my dream later but we should head over to breakfast. You're probably starving."
"Yeah, okay." We walk to breakfast together. When we enter the room everybody freezes in shock. They start asking what happened. I stay silent, not wanting to tell them what happened.
"Monokuma kept him in his room against his will and made that rule as the new motive, but nothing happened so everything is okay." Kokichi lies.
"Y-Yeah." Everyone keeps staring at us. "Hey Kokichi, wanna eat at my room?"
"Okay." He agrees.
When we get to my room we start eating while sitting on the bed. Kokichi stares st his food, his eyes empty. "Kokichi?"
He blinks before looking up. "Um, Yeah?"
"You okay?" I ask.
"Yeah."
"Okay," I say. Kokichi goes back to eating. He looks at his plate of food as if thinking hard. Unexpectedly, he drops his fork. Kokichi?" He starts crying. "Kokichi! What's wrong?" He doesn't answer. Instead, he sobs into my chest.
"Is it about that dream?" He nods. "Can you tell me about it? If it's affecting you that badly, I need to know what it was about." He looks at the floor. "It's really bad, isn't it?" He nods. "You don't have to tell me everything if you don't want to."
He finally looks up and speaks shakily. "I don't actually remember it that well... All I remember is fear, then pain... then blood. Everywhere. And in the middle of it all... was you, with a pole through your stomach coughing up blood and..." He starts shaking.
I pull him close. "It's all right, It was just a dream."
"But it felt so real, and it was all my fault..." His voice cracks at the end.
"Kokichi. Look at me. I'm safe. You haven't done anything wrong, everything's all right."
"I know. I'm just so afraid of losing you." I stroke his hair in an attempt to soothe him. "Am I doing something wrong?" Kokichi whispers. "Does the universe hate me just like everybody else?"
"Kokichi-"
"You're the only good thing in my life and the universe wants to take you away. I thought there could finally be something good in my life. I should have known happiness doesn't last."
"Kokichi, it was just a dream."
He dips his head so I can't see his face. "I know that... But I also know nothing good has ever happened to me that lasted. We're in a killing game! I could turn my back for a second and when I turn around you could be dead. "He stays silent for a while. "I wish I could just lay with you forever and forget the killing game. Forget everything. I don't want to think about anything at all except you. Your familiar scent, the warmth from your body."
"But we can't stay like his forever."
"I know." We lay together in silence for a couple minutes.
Eventually, we get up. "What do you want to do?"
"I might have an idea." He smiles mischievously.
"Okay."
"But it's a surprise. You'll find out tomorrow. I need to set it up. So I'll see you tomorrow."
"What do I do?" I ask.
"I don't know, hang out with everyone else, I guess."
"Okay then." Kokichi leaves to do who knows what. While of walking around I spot Kiibo and decide to hang out with him. When we're done talking, I head back to my room and fall asleep.
The next day I wake up and head over to Kokichi's room and knock on the door. When I get no reply I assume he's already at the dining hall. I walk in the dining hall and sit down next to Kokichi. He smiles. "Good, now everyone's here." Kokichi grabs some things from under the table.
"What's he doing?" Kaito looks at Kokichi. In reply, Kokichi throws confetti in his face. He then precedes to throw the confetti everywhere. He places a paper crown on his head.
"What in the world are you doing?" I ask. He doesn't answer but instead blows a kazoo. He lifts a blanket of a dozen balloons and spreads them out across the room. He puts a cake on the counter then puts up a banner. The banner reads, "Happy Birthday" Then it hits me. Today is Kokichi's birthday. I do the math. Sure enough, today is June 21st. How had I not noticed? Then again, I haven't exactly been keeping track of the date.
"What is going on?" Gonta asks.
"I'm throwing a funeral, what do you think I'm doing? It's my birthday."
"Oh! Happy Birthday, Kokichi!" Gonta smiles.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I ask.
"I wanted to see your reaction." He smiles.
"It's your birthday?" Kaito asks surprised.
"Yup!"
"Oh, okay." Kaito starts to stand up but doesn't.
"Oh, by the way, I put glue on all of your seats."
"What the hell Kokichi?" Kaito says angrily.
"I figured some of you would try to leave so I took some precautions." Everyone tries to stand and sure enough, everyone is glued to their seats. I try to stand as well and am surprised when I manage to stand up. Kokichi smiles. "Oops, I toootally forgot to put glue on your seat. I sit back down and smile. Only Kokichi would glue everyone to their seats to force them to come to his birthday party.
"You didn't have to glue us down." Maki glares at Kokichi.
"Hey, stop complaining. I even made cake for you all."
"How do we know it's not poisoned?" Kiibo asks.
"Shuichi, tell them it's not poisoned," Kokichi demands.
"It's not poisoned?" I say unsure.
"See, a detective said it's not poisoned. Now eat up." Kokichi passes out cake to everybody. Everybody eats the cake except for Maki, who refuses to touch it, and Kiibo, who can't. If Kiruma I were here she'd lecture us all about eating cake for breakfast. Twenty minutes later Kokichi announces that the glue should have worn off by now. Everyone stand up except Kaito.
"Hey, how come my glue hasn't worn off yet?" Kaito asks.
"Oh, I accidentally put the stronger glue on your seat. Your's still has another thirty minutes."
"Danm you Kokichi!" Kaito tries to hit him even though Kokichi is five feet away.
Everyone leaves except for Kaito. Kokichi and I head to my room. "Happy Birthday Kokichi." We sit together on my bed. "If you knew, then how come you didn't remind me?"
"Well, I originally wasn't even gonna celebrate. I just happened to notice it was coming up."
"Have you had a good birthday so far?" I ask.
"This has been the funnest birthday I've ever had!"
"Really?"
"Hey, for one of my birthdays I was splattered with cake ingredients and set on fire, so I'd say this is an improvement." Kokichi laughs.
"You were set on fire?!"
"Well, they kept throwing lit candles at me. It didn't leave any marks though, I was able to put it out quickly."
"Have all your birthdays been like that?
"More or less." He shrugs like it's nothing.
"That's pretty serious Kokichi."
"Not really, They were just paying little pranks on me like friends do. Get this, one time they stabbed me and locked me in a supply closet, I found that hilarious." He laughs. "My point is, this day was amazing."
"Well, I'm glad that you're happy." I hug him and kiss the top of his head. "Happy Birthday."
