*Zella's POV*
Today was turning out to be a really depressing day.
I was getting late for school and there was a very heavy downpour outside, so even though I was just in front of the school building, stuck in the morning traffic, my mum wouldn't let me get down and walk the last few yards. I was debating in my head on whether to just disobey her and get down, or to just accept the detention letter I would receive tomorrow for being late more than three times. I decided on just getting down- who wanted detention seven days before school closed? Not me.
I unlocked the door, and heard my mum shouting at me as I shut it and made my way to school.
Don't worry. She would eventually forget about it.
Fortunately, I walked under trees which provided semi-cover from the rain and I wasn't as wet as I could've been when I got to school. I took the front gate where there was a roof thing for when it rains, and stood watching kids going in and out, admiring the full view of the outdoors.
But, I was not as safe as I thought.
Before I could realize what had happened, I was bombarded with water sprays and squirts coming from all around me like it was a planned ambush. While I shrieked, I heard boys guffawing through the water dripping from my ears and sliding down my face. When I looked around I also saw Kiley and Tira, two of my friends, soaking wet with water, but not as badly attacked as me.
It was then that I realized who had done it. Scott Camrin and his gang were still encircled around me, still laughing. I gritted my teeth in anger (and the cold).
"What is wrong with you people?! What sort of guy sprays a girl with water?!! And it's raining, too!!" I shouted above the sound of the heavy rain. "Urgh, I'm drenched!!"
"Firstly, there's nothing wrong with me or my friends! Secondly, the kind of guy who wins a bet against that girl does!!" He shouted, then they all laughed, and started to squirt me with water again.
I'm guessing they had this whole thing planned out for when I came since all their bottles seemed to be so full of water. Damn boys and their water-spraying water bottles! Those things should be banned!
I ran away screaming, and they still wouldn't stop! I was running through the rain getting squirted and attacked with water, and I was already freaking drenched!! If the security had bothered to unlock the gates to the school building, maybe I could have ran away indoors, but noooo.
Finally, a teacher (thankfully the head of the disciplinary committee), snapped at us and they all stopped, some of them running away, but Scott and Max were left behind along with Matt, who were caught spraying me at that moment.
"All of you, principle's office, now!" He demanded in a low, threatening voice that never failed to make me shiver. Technically I was already shivering in the cold and the wetness of my clothes, but hey, why not let another fearful shiver join the club?
------------------------Time Leap------------------------------
I'd never been to the principle's office before. I knew it was scary, though. Most of the guys, being the guys they were, joked around saying that the principle was really nice. Scott was always sent there for not concentrating in class, flirting with the young female teachers, arguing with the male ones, and messing about with other people's stuff. He once said, "Oh, yeah, I went to the principle's office yesterday. He was really nice. We even had tea with him, Max and I."
I could never stop laughing at the way he said that, but now, I couldn't even crack a smile at the memory. The principle was old and British, but apparently really, really strict. As we stood inside his office, waiting for him to finish his call, his back was turned to us while we mouthed insults at each other.
"I fudgin' hate you, Scott!" I mouthed as quietly as I could. I knew he understood what I had said because his mouth spread into a wide grin.
I glared back at his smug face.
"Since when did anyone say fudge instead of fuck?" He mouthed back and snickered with mockery.
"Will you both just shut the fuck up?" Max half-mouthed, half-breathed from in between us. I have to admit, he sounded pretty hot when he swore.
No, Zella, no. This guy sprayed you with water. He's an asshole!
And a hot one at that. I stared at his blue eyes glaring at Scott, mouthing more cuss words at his best friend. Seriously, it sounded really sexy when cuss words rolled off of his tongue, I'm not sure why. All I knew was, if he didn't swear, I wouldn't have found him that hot. He wasn't exactly on a Level Sexy when it came to outward appearance, not to be mean or anything.
"At least we get tea." Matt whispered bluntly, poking his head between Max and Scott. I mentally laughed at that, a smile creeping onto my face.
"Yeah. But we should tell him to put more sugar, it tasted really blunt last time." Scott dead-panned.
"Wait, you guys actually drank tea?" I whisper-asked in shock.
They looked at each other knowingly, recalling a fixed memory, all of them saying, "Yeah," and starting to snicker quietly. I didn't get what was so funny, but I had to laugh as well. They were so hilarious sometimes.
Ew, c'mon, Zella. They don't deserve that compliment.
Even if it was just in your head.
At that exact moment, the principle cleared his throat, and I was pulled back into reality. I was in the principle's office, and I was probably going to get busted for running in the rain. Ya know, cuz I'm a girl. And I shouldn't run in the rain.
I'm just going to hope that you get what I mean and move on.
"Zella, from what I was told by Mr. Harrison, you did nothing wrong and I'm sure you are very cold right now. Would you like to go home, or are you fit to continue the school day?" The principle asked kindly with his thick, British accent. I was shocked. I did nothing wrong! Yes!
"Uh, I'd like to go home, Mr. Stone." I said solemnly, wrapping myself with my arms in an attempt to show my shivering and discomfort.
"Alright, just hang on for a minute and you can go call your mother." He said before turning to the three boys next to me. Surprisingly, they all looked calm, though very sad like they were in a state of mourning.
Actors.
"Gentlemen, what do you have to say?" He asked them, as if he had said it a million times before. Which he probably had, though.
"I'm sorry." Matt mumbled with a bored look on his face.
"We're very, very sorry, Zella." Scott exaggerated and scrunched up his face in an act of feeling guilty.
"Sorry, Zella." Max said quietly, in a way that made me feel like he genuinely meant it. Stop it, Zella. You're too naïve.
"It's..." I was about to say 'okay', but I just couldn't tell the lie. So I ended it with, "really cold, can I go now?"
Unfortunately, though the principle let me go just then, I still had to listen to my mum's enraged outburst as we drove back home in the car. Things were not going well so far.
I half-listened to my mum as she ranted on and on while also daydreaming about Max... and basketball.
I imagined myself dribbling a ball on a deserted street court with a broken down board and a ripped net. It was raining softly, and I was a little soaked. But I wasn't alone, I was playing one-on-one with Max, and his body was close to mine as he defended me, keeping me warm in a way. Okay, what? I dribbled faster and dodged him several times before I sprinted forward and went for a layup...
"Zella!" Mum snapped me out of my daydream, crashing a wave of reality on me.
"Yah, mum?" I said tiredly.
I was actually really tired, and cold.
"Oh my, you have a cold!" She said, looking worried. I then realized the car was stopped and we were in front of a supermarket called Keells. My voice was all thick and I had a nose-block, it was so bad I could barely breathe. "Wait here, I'm going to get some eggs, do you want anything?"
"Uh," I said uncomfortably, now that I think about it, it would be nice to have a snack, "Some chocolate-chip cookies, maybe?"
"Okay, sure, darling." She said sympathetically, giving me a pat on the shoulder before getting out. I locked the car after her and sat back, moaning miserably.
This sucked.
At least, I got the chocolate-chip cookies.
I heard a buzzing in my skirt pocket and found a message for me from Marcie.
Marcie: Why aren't you at school? :( 7:56
She must have sent the message discreetly while inside the classroom. I replied to her;
Me: Got a cold. Explain later. :/ 8:03
That's when I realized that now that I wasn't going to go to school, I was going to miss practice. Oh, crap. They're going to tell me off like I did something horrible and blame me for losing the match, as well. My team hated me for some reason, and they never really liked to listen to me, though occasionally they did - duh, I was their captain.
They had to obey me, or coach Su will sue them.
Get it?
Su, sue?
Yah, well, I thought that was really funny.
Coach Su is the basketball coach at Farland High. He was super-nice to the girls, but super-snappy and loud, too, with a cursing habit. He was seriously scary. There was a rumour that he used to hit the boys' team from his last school on the legs with a big pipe when they lost a match, I heard that it hurt a lot, too. I haven't seen him do it, but I don't doubt the fact that he did it. Most of the guys who played on the school teams had abs, so every time he wanted to punish them, he'd pinch them really hard, just below the belly button. It caused me pain to see their agonized faces all scrunched up in pain. He did it very often, though. It didn't look very pretty.
Just to give the team a heads-up, I decided to send a text to my basketball team in order to tell them I couldn't come for practice today.
Me: Sorry, guys, can't come to school or practice. Got a really bad cold. 8:04
I saw mum walking out of Keells just as I switched off my phone and I leaned over to unlock the door.
"Here you go, love." Mum tweeted and handed me the shopping bag.
I fished out my chocolate-chip cookies and also noted that mum had bought a few other things, along with the eggs. She never really stuck to her shopping list; no matter what she planned to buy, there was always something she hadn't realized she needed once she went in.
I stopped munching and looked up at her with my mouth full of cookie mush (yum), "You bought a towel?"
"I can't expect you to freeze to death like that, can I?" She exclaimed as if it was meant to be totally expected of her while wrapping the towel around me. Well, I guess it was. I was just touched that she cared so much - I actually felt so much warmer now.
"Thanks, mum." I said, smiling at her.
Let me just say, those cookies tasted so much better than the last time I had them.
-------------------------Time Leap--------------------------
It was 8:15 in the night and I was very, very ill. My nose was continuously running and my head was aching like a hurricane was inside. A very... big... hurricane. I will spare you a bigger description of my remaining agony. I was lying in bed with a mug of tea my mum made sitting on the bedside table. I didn't feel like drinking anything. All I wanted was something tasty to eat. Like comfort food. Cookies, a chicken rap, sushi, a Big Mac maybe...
Pizza.
Yum.
To worsen things, Mint had called and told me off about missing practice. Apparently they all knew about what had happened with the water-spray ambush. Chase had told them, obviously, him being Mint's boyfriend and all, but he must have added some touches to the truth. Mint kept saying I was a 'desperate little bitch' and mentioning something about 'messing with Jazzy's guy' and 'being an indecent slut'. I just pretended to listen and ignored most of what she was saying until she said farewell. I didn't really care.
But, I had to do something to regain control of my team. The final match was coming up next Tuesday, against Gibston High, a preferably good team. If I didn't get these girls to go by my orders soon, we would lose the match... and the whole tournement.
If only Kiley and Tira were in the team. Well, Kiley would never even consider trying out since she was a solid anti-sports girl, maintaining an all A*s and As report card with that one D for Sports. It was remarkable though, she was super slim without all the physical exercise, apparently she had 'very good mental fitness'.
Whatever you say, Kiley. Whatever.
Tira went for tennis, badminton and swimming. She claimed to have no ability to dribble or hold or pass or shoot a ball without a racket of some sort, therefore keeping her a fair distance away from basketball and netball.
If they were not in the team, and not in Mint and Jazz's circle of friends, the team will never believe them.
If only Marcie saw... but, being my best friend, they wouldn't believe her either.
I heard the familiar tweet of my phone signalling a new WhatsApp message. I leaned over with some effort and grabbed it off the bedside table.
Marcie: You home? 20:38
Me: Yea. *_* 20:38
Marcie: How r u feeling? 20:38
Me: Sick. *_* 20:38
I felt a tickle in my nose, and a few seconds later, I had sneezed onto my phone. Yuck, I know. I wiped the screen on my sleeve reluctantly.
"Eww..." I mumbled, grimacing at the state of my phone.
Marcie: How sick? 20:39
Me: Sick enuf to hav just sneezed all over my iPhone 6S?? 20:39
Marcie: AHAHAHAHA lol. ew. 20:39
~ Are u in the mood for food? 20:39
Me: Definitely. how'd u kno? 20:40
And she left me hanging. She always did that. Whenever she was texting me, if she had to do something or simply needed to pee, she would just leave her phone aside without really giving a warning and go off to do whatever she needed to do. Sometimes I understood, sometimes it was just annoying.
I kept my phone aside and laid my head back. Suddenly, there was a loud ringing throughout the house as our doorbell was rung. Must have been our irritating neighbour complaining about our garden lights.
You see, we had this old man named Mr. Hemton who lived next-door to our house, and he seemed to despise our garden lights, and anything else that radiated a message of happiness. He also went to bed really early, so he'd almost always tell us to switch off our lights so that him and his pet poodle could sleep. Apparently his dog couldn't sleep inside his dog-mansion when all these lights were on.
The lights were actually these really adorable, ceramic gnomes with a bulb fixed into their hollow insides. My dad had bought them from Scotland when he had gone on a trip with his team of engineers to test out their new ship, and I absolutely adored all of them, they looked especially mesmerizing in the night when they were glowing among the flowers and the pot plants.
But, of course, we had to switch them off most nights because of Mr. Hemton. And we tried to be very nice, humble people, so we didn't put up a fight to keep them on.
But, what shocked me was when I saw Marcie standing at the door, holding about three, large boxes of Pizza Hut take-outs and two smaller boxes which I guessed were potato wedges and garlic bread.
"Honey, there's someone here to see you!" My mum called from downstairs, naturally singing since she knew I loved Pizza Hut more than anything else in the world.
"I know..." I called back, forgetting about my cold.
"I was going to eat it by myself, but then I decided to share some with you, too. I mean, considering the fact that you're in such a state of misery." She said casually, walking into my room and seating herself on a bean bag.
"Gimme..." I growled, pretending to lose control over pizza.
"Down, dog, down." Marcie snapped jokingly and moved herself down onto the green, fur rug lying beside my bed, laying out the pizzas and snacks. At that same time, mum came in holding two plastic plates.
"Here you go, my loves." She beamed, handing us both a plate each. Before she left, she stole a wedge and pizza slice, which caused me to glare at her like an animal stolen of its lunch.
"So," Marcie began, placing two slices, a handful of potato wedges and a garlic bread slice on my plate. My mouth watered as I eyed the food.
"So, if I plan on getting a boyfriend," I said with my mouth full, "I'll first have to run a test on him."
"Really? What test is that?" She asked in curiosity, taking a large bite of her pepperoni pizza slice. There were three kinds; pepperoni, spicy chicken, and my personal favourite, triple-layered mozzarella cheese.
"I'll have to get you to plan a major food fest at Pizza Hut with almost all my personal favourites," I said, my eyes concentrated on the pizza in my hand, "On the same day and same time that I have my date with my potential boyfriend."
"And then?" She asked, although I'm pretty sure she knew what I was about to say next.
"If I choose food fest over potential boyfriend, he's not worth crap of my time. And if I choose potential boyfriend over food fest, I'm 100% sure he's the one." I finished, savoring the delicious crust that only Pizza Hut could offer. No other pizza from any other place had good, golden, crunchy crusts except for Pizza Hut. It was the only type of pizza I actually finished without leaving anything behind.
"Good theory. I'm pretty sure that's the perfect test." Marcie said matter-of-factly, taking another slice off of her pepperoni pizza while I took one off the mozzarella.
"What about you?" I questioned.
"Well," She said uncertainly, "I'm not really sure yet. I guess I'll know when I come across someone worth it. I won't need a test, haha."
"Wise." I stated.
We had been eating for about an hour, until we got down to the last slice of pizza... a spicy chicken.
I was stuffed, but I was determined to eat that slice, too. Marcie looked just as pumped up with carbs as I did, but just as determined, too.
"Let's talk. Forget about the last slice, we'll deal with it later." I said out of nowhere. I wanted to discuss what happened with Scott, Max and Matt. Also what was going on with Scott, as well as my attraction towards Max, "Scott gave me a bet yesterday."
"Okay, I'm listening." She said, bringing her attention back to me.
"He said if his team lost against North-East High, I would get something I wanted, and if they won, I would have to prepare the victory party. So, in the morning-"
"They squirted you with water just to make fun of the fact that you lost the bet?" Marcie finished for me, an understanding look in her eyes, "No wonder Mint's description was a bit off."
"Huh, they told you?" I asked quietly.
"Yeah, no big deal. I'm Matt's love interest, of course they'd have to tell me." She explained.
"Well, I know, but that's so weird. They don't even talk to you, but they tell you crap just because Matt likes you? That's just wrong, if you ask me." I said. I didn't know if it was my jealousy speaking or my actual logic.
"Kind of, I guess. But at least then, you also get to know the stuff going on." She said positively, smiling at me.
"So, what am I going to do about the party?" I asked, looking down at the empty plate sitting on my lap.
"Well, I'll help you organize it if you want." She suggested. Yeah, that would actually be a huge help.
"Okay, thanks." I said gratefully, "He wants it on Saturday. Oh, and can you ask Mint and Jazz to come help, too? Try explaining the real story to the team for me."
"Sure." She said.
There was a small pause before we both returned our gazes to the pizza slice. It was probably cold now, and besides, Marcie was helping me. She should have it.
"You can have it." We both said at the same time, making us both laugh lightly.
"Actually. You're helping me a lot, it's best if you had it." I reasoned.
"Alright, I agree." She said before happily finishing off the last slice while I sat silently.
"I'm guessing you should get going?" I asked.
"Yeah, see ya." She replied, standing up and walking over to the door.
"Hey, Mar?" I called, making her turn, "Thank you for everything. You're the best friend I've ever had, and I'm serious."
"You, too Zel. Bye." She said, smiling before she walked out of my room.
Once she left, I realized that I hadn't gotten around to the bit where I had feelings for Max, but I was sure we would talk about it later. At least we got the Scott thing over with.
I snuggled into my pillow and fell into a deep sleep, faintly hearing my mum come into the room and kiss me goodnight.
-----------------------------------END OF CHAPTER ---------------------------------
