Chapter 13: Do-Over

Your body aches and feels stiff, you feel heavy, like a ton of bricks floating to the bottom of a lake. You groan as you open your eyes, seeing nothing but yellow, green and dark blue in your hazy state. You're barely able to sit up before you feel a stitch in your side, you wince as you sit bringing your hand under your shirt to your side, bringing it back out you see dull grey blood smeared on your palm.

Blood? Grey? Isn't your blood supposed to be red?

You lift your shirt to make sure it was in fact yours, a large open wound is your answer. Great. You feel a bandage on your cheek, you have a feeling that it was dirty by now, and you see a stick at your side. They aren't the best of items to have but at least you had something, right? You look up seeing the stars out of a small opening, did you fall down here? You don't remember but you do remember tripping on something. . .you look around you and see you were sitting on a bed of yellow flowers. They must've broken your fall, they look so familiar but you can't remember why. Like you know what they are but the name won't come to you.

You pick up the stick and try to stand up, feeling a sharp pain in your leg but you manage to stand nonetheless, you look around seeing a dark hallway in front of you, should you go through? Well it's either that or waiting for help to come, whenever that may be, it could take hours, days, months. You don't have the proper supplies in the first place so it's a no-brainer. You limp towards the hallway, holding your side to keep whatever 'blood' you had from oozing out.

Pressing your other hand against the wall's smooth surface as a prop and also a guide into the dark passage, you continue down the hallway, slowly but surely. You wonder what happened to you, why you are hurt in this way, some of the bruises are obvious but some others aren't, those are weird scratches on your wrists and arms. Especially this weird flower that is wrapped around your left wrist and won't come off, it's glowing orange and looks like a trumpet, you decide to call it a Bugle flower until you know it's real name. The name really toots it.

*The corniness of the bad pun oddly fills you with determination.

Travelling further, a light cascades down on a small green patch of grass that holds a small yellow flower, since the wall has a sharp turn you realized that you are in another room so you can't use it as a prop or guide anymore, you use the stick to help you walk instead. Curiosity gets the better of you and you limp closer to the patch of grass, as you get closer you realize that the flower has a face, it's odd to you but what has your attention the most is the fact that its eyes are pitch black. Almost soulless. It's a little unsettling but you decide to ignore it for now. The flower seems to smile wider the closer you get but you could see a slight shiver in its stem, you wonder why it's shaking.

"Howdy!" It says in a high pitched voice, "I'm Flowey, Flowey the flower."

The moment it says that something triggers in your mind, a sharp pain appears out of nowhere, it's so severe that it causes you to fall to your knees, clutching your head and gasping in pain. Your mouth opens to scream but a staticy sound comes out instead, you can't speak. Could you even speak? A scene starts to play in your mind, a memory perhaps?

Grey coated his green, viney hands and dripped from his mouth, grey specks were scattered all over his body, and a menacing smile on his face. His eyes soulless as he forced himself into me again, I screamed for help. . .but no one came. No one ever comes. My back hurt more each time he came back, his 'interrogations' always ended the same way no matter what happened, and no matter how hard I fought he would always come back more brutal than ever. And each time I could feel my determination to fight back dwindle more and more.

You came back to reality, gasping hard to level your breathing, the flower shivers with a 'worried' gaze, looking to see if you are alright. The memory is so graphic, so detailed, and so embedded in your brain now. You want it to go away but it won't no matter how hard you try to forget it.

"Flowey!! Please stop!!!"

'Flowey'? Didn't the flower just say his name is Flowey? Was he the one that did that to you? Those awful things that shouldn't happen to anyone?

"I won't stop until you admit it!" It was definitely him, the voice can't be mistaken for any one else.

"Uh, are you okay? W-Why were you screaming?" Flowey asks.

You look up to him slowly, a scowl on your face, rage boiling in your veins. How dare this. . .this. . .monster do that to you! You clutch the stick in your hand, it whines in your grip from your strength even though you are still weak. You rise to your knees, inching closer to the yellow plant. He shivers more the closer you are, his petals droop slightly.

"H-Hey, that w-was some f-fall back th-there," he stutters, somehow it sounds so rehearsed, like you've heard it before, "you m-must be so c-confus-OW! HEY."

*The desire to kill the demon plant fills you with determination.

You whack him with your stick, each time harder than the last. He tries to get away from you but you grab his stem before he got too far and continue to hit him.

"Hey!*whack* Ow, Hey! *whack**whack* Stop! *whack**cough*Ow!*whack that came back from Albuquerque*HEY!"

You only stop because your shoulders started to stiffen, most likely from your fall, by the time you're done he is battered and bruised. His left eye is swollen, his lip is cut, his stalk is bent and crooked and some of his petals are torn. One is completely off. You expect him to be angry or show at least a hint of frustration but he doesn't, not even a scowl. At least at first.

"Heh, I guess I deserved that, huh?" You huff and cross your arms, "Yeah, I knew you were going to do that."

There is a short silence between you two.

"Heh, it doesn't matter if you hate me anyway, you won't be able to save them," he says, his smile growing wickedly, "no matter how many times you reset they'll just end up back here. You'll never be able to get away from me, Y/N."

How did he know your name- oh yeah. . .You growl at him, not knowing what he is talking about but still feeling rather pissed off.

"And to think you almost had him." He mumbles.

Him? Who's that?

You start to feel angry anyway and raise the stick welding hand again, before you could resume your onslaught on him he gasps and sinks into the ground. You sigh heavily, feeling fatigue weigh on your fragile body and your hair fall before your face. What was that all about? Who was he talking about?. . .why did he do those things to you?

Amongst those horrifying flashbacks was another memory, of the same flower but mangled and half dead, scared and in pain, in the flashback you had a rather sharp and rather dusty knife in your hand. You had no idea why you had the knife in your hand or where you got that or the memory from but you didn't like it, sure you hated the flower but you don't want to kill him, right. . ? You couldn't hear anything he was saying although his mouth was moving, the memory ended just as he screamed loudly and tears poured down his cheeks. What the hell?

A soft angel-like voice interrupts your thoughts, making you look up from your crouched state.

"Oh my," it came from a woman, or rather a goat(?) woman, "a fallen child. My name is Toriel, caretaker of the ruins."

That name, why did it sound so familiar?

She's tall, way taller than you as you are probably to her chest, she has white but slightly pink fur that looks soft to the touch, her ears are long, slender and rest on her shoulders, her hair is styled in such a way that it looks slick back and points up. Like a cockatoo. She has a pair of pointy fangs that hang over her bottom lip, deep red eyes and large curved horns. She's wearing a long dark purple tunic that reaches just above her ankles with long white sleeves that stretch to her wrists, her tunic has a strange symbol on her chest, it looks so familiar. In fact everything about her feels familiar to you but you can't place why.

"What's a monster boy doing in the ruins? How did you get here, my child?"

Monster? You aren't a monster, you were human. . .or so you think. When she reaches to touch you she pats your head, slightly shifting a pair of fluffy ears that had drooped. You jolt in surprise, you have. . .cat ears? You touch the side of your head to confirm, you do have cat ears! And boy are they fluffy.

"My my, what a strange child, and a big one at that," she giggles, "oh no you're hurt. Here let me heal you."

A white mist surrounds one of her hands, it looks like fire, you retreat a little when she comes closer but her warm smile calms you down. She cups your cheek and shoulder, the fire mist spreading over your wounds, you feel a lot better. Your wounds are gone completely and you can move freely. You want to thank her but remember you can't speak so you hug her instead, she was a lot slimmer than the tunic made her appear. She's taken aback at first but returns the favor.

"Come my child," she says while helping you stand, "let us go home and see if I can help you. Your parents must be worried sick."

Parents. . .parents? You can't remember anything about having parents, visually anyway. You hear two voices a man with a baritone voice and a woman with an energetic one talking to each other, they sound happy.

Yes! He's finally woken up!

What a relief, I thought he was gone forever, I don't want to lose my baby again!

It's okay love, now he can try again.

Are they talking about you? Why were you guys separated in the first place? How did it happen? As you walk hand in hand you notice other creatures hiding in the shadows, they're scared of you two, but why? Could they just be shy? After a while, Toriel lets you walk on your own, close behind you so you would stay safe of course. The creatures from before jump out the shadows, preparing to FIGHT you. You don't want to FIGHT them. You don't want to hurt anyone but why are they trying to hurt you?

Toriel told you how to FIGHT and SPARE, SPAREing seems to suit you more. You ACT towards the creatures, or monsters as they were called, differently until they decide to SPARE you. There were Froggits, Whimsums Vegetoids, Looxen(?) and many others whose names you can't remember.

There's also a depressed ghost named Napstablook, he thinks he is in your way (which he is) but you feel sorry for him, he uses his tears as attacks. It just hurts your soul, so you try to lift his spirits. He ends up showing you a new style of him called 'Dapperblook', he looks so adorable you couldn't help but freak out a little, he blushes a dark grey and a small smile replaces his frown. Eventually he disappears out of the way, after you hugged him of course, and you and Toriel continue on your journey.

After about an hour of ACTing, SPAREing and having a few laughs here and there, you finally reach Toriel's home, it looks like a small cabin built into a digout in the wall.

*The sight of a cozy little house in such a desolate area fills you with determination.

She opens the door and ushers you inside, reluctantly you do as asked and walk in, the smell of butterscotch and cinnamon fills your nose and brings a smile to your face. She smiles seeing you happy and takes your hand again, leading you down a hallway with more yellow flowers in vases on small tables and large rugs on the floor until you two stop at a door.

"I have prepared a room for you, I hope it's to your liking. There
are some clothes you can try that might fit you, if you'd like to wear them that is," she says while rubbing your head, "oh! Is something burning?"

She dashes away from you to the other hallway that leads to another part of the house, you giggle slightly at her, somehow you find it amusing. You open the door and realize it is a bedroom, a teenager's one judging by the size of everything, which was 'not Toriel-sized'. It's clean, not an ounce of dust. There's a dresser, wardrobe, desk and chair, and a bed to the side. You decide to take up on her offer and go to the wardrobe for clothes finding sweaters galore, all in the same design and color and cargo shorts in light purple, black and one particular one in dark orange.

You decide to wear one of the sweaters (which was blue with purple horizontal stripes) and the orange cargo pants to match Bugle, tucking your tail in the back of the pants. Wait. . .your tail?? You looked behind you and there was indeed a scaly (f/c) tail behind you. Cat ears and a lizard tail, wow you're one weird monster kid.

You start to yawn, tiredness has finally caught up with you after all the excitement, you decide to take a nap hoping whoever was the teen that lives here won't mind. You lay down on the bed under the covers, the bed feels so warm that you fall asleep pretty fast.

You wake up a while after, yawning and stretching as you sat up, you smell a familiar aroma wafting to your nose, a pie is left on the table for you. You expect it came from Toriel, you smile at her kindness, like a mother taking care of her child. Now that you think about it you wonder where the owner of this room had gone and if they were coming back. You swing your legs over the edge, putting on your boots whose dust won't come off, where did it come from in the first place?

You walk over to the table, picking up the pie on the plate, you feel no desire to eat it at the moment, you aren't hungry. As if hearing your dilemma, the pie poofs into gold twinkles and disappears, you feel a buzz in your pocket. You reach in and find a phone(a rather old one at that), on the screen it read:

1 item collected.

What the hell does that mean?

The pie triggers another memory.

Toriel was standing in front of you, her eyes were wide and bright, there was a scratch on her face and a gash on her side, she looked heartbroken. The same knife in your hand, she exploded into dust before you and you walked through her remains without a care in the world.

That memory sends a pang through your heart- no, your soul. How could you do that to goat mom? Goat mom. . .you wonder if she'll let you call her that.

You shake your head to forget that memory and walk out the room, hopefully Toriel won't mind you having the phone or could explain what just happened but you need to ask her how to get out of the ruins. You can't stay there forever, you need to know why and how you were separated from your parents, you need to know why the flower did that to you, you need to find out who this 'he' person was. Walking down the hall into a different part of the house, you find Toriel sitting in a chair wearing glasses and reading a book. She looks up to with a smile as you walk up to her and sit on the ground.

"Hello, my child, I see you had a nice rest," you nod, "that's good to hear, and the clothes suit you well," you smile, "but you look troubled, is there something you want to ask me?"

You want to ask her how to get out but you can't speak, so how were you going to ask her? You sigh and slump your shoulders, you don't realize you did something until she speaks again.

"Oh? Sign language? I haven't seen that in years!" She smiles.

Sign language? From you? You don't remember learning it but as you continue it was as simple as speaking.

"Y-you want to leave?" She's in shock, like she doesn't want you to leave.

*You tell her you can't stay here.

"B-but you can, you can stay here and I can take care of you-"

*You tell her you would love to stay but you just can't.

The conversation seems all to familiar, like you can predict what's going to happen.

*you tell her you don't want to FIGHT her either.

She's shocked, she didn't expect you to say that, was that her plan after all? To FIGHT you to see if you are worthy or ready enough to leave? You definitely don't want that memory to happen again.

"Come with me." She stands up quickly, disappearing down the hall before you could get up, you quickly follow her down a set of steps into what you assume to be the basement, the walls are a rich purple and the air seems cold. When you reach the bottom, she takes your hand again and you two walk down the hall together.

"Ever since I saw you I knew you were different, you look more human than monster even your soul too, that's why the ruin monsters attacked you, but even when they tried to kill you you seemed so calm towards them. Unlike the humans that put us here you're kind and have a warm heart," you reach a door with the same symbol as the one on her clothes, "though you look somewhat like a hybrid monster you must be careful for others may still attack you because you sensed as a human, my child. If you are here for the same reason as the other humans then you want to reach the barrier to go home, I trust that you will be safe and share your love to those you come across as you did with everyone here, and that little ghost." She giggles at the last part.

*You call her 'Goat Mom' and tell her you will be fine with a smile, you tell her there's nothing to worry about and that everything will be okay. You tell her you'll set everyone free and undo what the humans have done and that you would like her number.

She smiles and giggles slightly at the nickname.

"Oh! Of course!" She gives you her number (although it was already in the phone) and gives you a hug. As expected you are only to her chest so when she hugs while you both are standing you are smothered between two rather large and firm. . .watermelons, barely able to breath but you don't complain.

You aren't a pervert, you just let her hug you for her to show her affection. It does make your cheeks grow slightly warm though.

You hug her back and after a while you both let go, she smiles at you once more and waves goodbye as you leave through the door, waving behind you as well. The door shut abruptly, its dull metal clang echoing off the walls, you sigh heavily, another part of your journey was beginning. You walk down yet another hall this one seems to get lighter in shades the more you walk, until you went through a doorway, the room was dark and the yellow flower appears again. He looks healed and has a sly smile on his face.

"You think you're so clever don't you?" He seems ticked, "you SPAREd the life of a single person and for what? Just so you could see them again?" Is he talking about Toriel? "In this world it's kill or be killed."

That sentence, you've had this conversation before, 'kill or be killed' huh?

You walk towards him, head low and your hair falling before your face again, Flowey doesn't notice you've come forward for he is absentmindedly saying words.

"So what if you went by your own rules? Because of your will to save everyone you won't gain any LOVE and you'll stay weak, you'll just die over and over and over again and what'll happen after that? Will you just kill out of frustrati-mph!"

You stamp on him violently, you are still pissed about the memory, you don't think you'll ever forgive him. You hate his guts right now and that's all that matters at the moment. Several angry stomps and muffled cries of pain later, you walk towards another door huffing and puffing, beating the crap out of that flower is a real workout. You push against the door, the light on the other side is bright and blinds you but you continue through, you manage to get through the heavy doors and they shut behind you with a resounding clang.

Your eyes adjust to the brightness of outside, the temperature change makes you shiver, it is cold and snow fell from the sky. Wait, you're underground, how the hell is snow falling underground? You think logic must've quit its job here. You take a deep breath, a puff of white cloud forming in front of you when exhaling, another part of your journey has now come into affect.

*The desire to find answers about your past, fills you with DETERMINATION!
