Chapter 4. Locked In

In the morning, Lana, drove Zhan to work. Today she needed his car again, but Zhan hopes that this was the last time, since he himself is dependent on his car.

The evening before, Zhan had actually written and sent off two applications, but had little hope that he would even get a response from one of the two publishing houses. Afterwards, he had dinner with Lana and they watched a movie on Netflix before they wished each other good night and each went to his own room to sleep.

Zhan loved such evenings with Lana. They would sit in the living room relaxing, drinking a glass of wine, eating some snacks and talking. Because of her, he also felt more energized this morning. And after a quiet night, Zhan was also more relaxed when he thought about work. Besides, today wasn't Monday anymore.

When Zhan finally arrived at the office and greeted his colleagues who were already there, he sat down at his desk and immediately started his work. He searched the Internet for companies, which he called in turn and offered them insurance. After nearly 20 phone calls, he had actually sold two insurance policies.

Yesterday, as Zhan sat at his desk in his room at home, thinking again about the conversation with Yibo, he had to agree with him in a way. Zhan hadn't been doing enough to sell insurance lately. Mostly he just went through the customer lists and looked to see whose insurance policies were about to expire.

He told himself that from now on, he was going to try harder again. Especially since he never wants to have another conversation like the one he had yesterday, with Yibo in his office.

By breakfast break, Zhan had then already sold three insurance policies. Even though it's not his dream job, he's still good at it and had already been praised for it several times. And Zhan wants to be that employee again. At least until he finds a new job. Because one thing has become clear to him during all the thinking, sooner or later he will have to find a new job so that he doesn't have to keep running into Yibo.

When Zhan read on the Internet that several doctors' practices would be opening soon, he decided to skip his breakfast break and rather get in touch with the doctors. He didn't have much hope, because most of the time doctors were looking for insurance long before practices opened, but he still wanted to try.

And immediately during his first conversation, the doctor asked him to come to him after all and show him his insurance policies and explain them on the spot. Zhan was very happy, especially because the doctor promised that the other doctors would also be present.

He packed several insurance policies into his briefcase, which he only took when he had outside appointments, and put on his jacket. Then he went to Yibo's office; he knocked on the door and waited, but received no answer. After knocking a second time and then looking at the clock, Zhan shook his head because he forgot that everyone was on breakfast break.

So he put the documents for the three insurance policies sold so far in the mailbox by Yibo's door so that he could check them, and stuck a note on the door informing him that he was at an outside appointment.

Zhan then immediately made his way to the new doctor's practices. He took a cab there, annoyed that he now had to spend extra money on a cab because Lana still didn't have her car back. He was now anxious to see the reaction of the car mechanics when he and Lana told them they were going to pick up the car and take it to another garage.

After Zhan rang the doorbell to the doctor's office he had talked to on the phone, they opened the door for him. And just as the doctor had promised, his four other colleagues were also present. And much to Zhan's delight, none of them had taken any insurance yet.

Zhan explained to them what insurance he could offer them and at what prices. Fortunately, his insurance agency is one of the cheapest in the city, so it was not difficult for the doctors to decide on several of Zhan's insurance policies.

In total, Zhan sold 13 insurance policies to the 5 doctors. With his hands almost flying over the keyboard, Zhan entered all the data and then had the doctors sign the documents one after the other. For this he had bought the hardware for his laptop. So he didn't have to prepare everything, send it for signing and then finish it.

Now, he could directly finish the insurance policies as they were and email them to the doctors. Later, he would still have to print them out so that Yibo could check and approve them. But that was mostly just a formality in which, the department head merely checked the creditworthiness of the insured.

Proud of himself for selling 16 insurance policies in one day, and it was just noon, Zhan took a cab back to the office. He sat down at his desk, pulled all the data onto his company computer and printed out all the documents.

Then Zhan went to Yibo's office again, knocked and this time he got an answer. Zhan entered the office and put the documents on Yibo's desk. Actually, Zhan had wanted to go right back to his desk, but Yibo told him to sit down and then started looking at the documents.

"Mhm, very good. And the three from this morning are good too. I already checked the credit rating and everything is great. And these are doctors?" Asked Yibo.

"Yes sir. Five doctors and 13 insurance policies." Replied Zhan.

Yibo obviously winced when Zhan called him sir, but Zhan pretended not to register it. "Very well. Then, purely for our records, I'll do the credit check now, and then you can finish the insurance papers and send them to them later."

"Um, they're already done."

"Yeah I know. But we still print out the paperwork for our customers. That's what I meant by that."

"Oh, I see. Yeah okay. I'll do that then sir."

"Good, I'll let you know right then." Replied Yibo. Zhan nodded, bowed and left the office. Inside, Zhan was agitated, but he knew outside he appeared calm and collected.

Back at his desk, Zhan made several more phone calls. However, had no further luck. Then, after an hour, Zhan got the OK from Yibo for the insurance policies he had sold so far, and then began to finalize all the paperwork.

Again and again he looked at the clock and slowly he was getting hungry, because he hadn't eaten all day. So he went to the snack machine and got a pre-packed sandwich, which he ate immediately. "You must be really hungry if you like this." He heard someone say from the side.

Zhan turned to him, he didn't really have to, to know it was Yibo, and nodded. "Yes, it's my first meal today." He replied.

"You really shouldn't skip meals just because of work."

"Well, that was just today."

"I hope so. I don't want you to fall out here."

"That's not going to happen."

"You say that now Zhan. But you can never be sure."

"Uh never mind. I need to move on so I can get the paperwork out today."

"You can finish it tomorrow, too."

"What you can get done today, don't put off until tomorrow. No, I'll finish it now. I just need to make a quick call to Lana so she can drive to the garage by herself later."

"Do you love her?"

"Who? Lana?"

"Yes."

"Why are you asking me that? I'm not asking you if you love your wife, either."

"Then ask me."

"No thanks. No need, and none of my business. So I'll get back to my work then."

"Hey Zhan, wait a minute."

"What is it?"

"Do you want me to order you something to eat?"

"Food is not allowed in the office. Besides, I just ate. So, see you then." Replied Zhan and went back to his office.

He called Lana and told her that he would be working late. She replied that it was okay and that she and her girlfriend would pick up the car from the garage. Zhan wondered with a smile when he will finally meet Lana's girlfriend, because it seemed to be serious between them.

Zhan worked intently, not even noticing how time passed in the process. Only when he had finished everything, stretched and looked at the window, he noticed that it was already dark and looked at the clock. It was already shortly after 9 pm. Shocked, Zhan quickly got dressed and put the finished documents in envelopes on the pile for the mail department to send out tomorrow.

Then Zhan went to the door and tried to open it, but it wouldn't open. "Oh don't! Really now? Can't they check to see if there's no one left in the office before they lock up?" He wondered aloud.

He was about to pick up his cell phone and call the security to have someone come and unlock the door when the door to Yibo's office opened and Yibo came out. "What's wrong?" He asked.

"Why are you still here?" Asked Zhan, confused.

"I was waiting for a call and I guess I fell asleep. So what's going on?"

"The door is locked. Do you happen to have a key?"

"No, I don't. I won't get it until the next few days."

"Great. I'll call security to have someone come and unlock it."

"Yeah do that." Replied Yibo and briefly went back to his office where he retrieved his jacket and bag. When he returned, he looked questioningly at Zhan, "So, is anyone coming?"

"No one's answering the phone."

"Really? I'll give it a try." Yibo now tried to reach the security guard as well, but no one answered his phone either.

"Well, I guess no one wants to talk to you either." Said Zhan sarcastically as he saw Yibo take his phone off his ear and look disbelieving.

"What are we supposed to do now?"

"Well sir, there's not much we can do. We're locked in. All we can do is keep trying to call security or wait for them to make their rounds and then knock on the door so they can hear us."

"Could you please not do that with the sir?"

"No sorry. We're on the job here. And work is work. Don't forget that."

"Are you still mad at me about that?"

"No. I just wanted to remind you of what you said."

"Mhm, alright Zhan."

Zhan sat back down at his desk and tried to call security from the duty phone, but as before, no one picked up. "Is that idiot sleeping on duty again?" Zhan asked himself.

"Well Zhan, nobody wants to talk to you either huh? But seriously, now that we're both here and can't do anything but wait anyway, we could talk, right?"

"I don't know how many times I have to or should say this. But I'm happy to repeat myself again. I don't want to talk about the past. That's what the whole thing is about, isn't it?"

"Yeah, but there are things I wanted to talk to you about."

"Let the past be the past okay? That was seven years ago. Why bring it up again now? We've both moved on. We're both married and you even have a child. So why dredge up the past again and talk about things that nobody cares about now anyway?"

"Because there are things I need to tell you."

"Yes Okay. But not now and not today. Not tomorrow or the day after tomorrow either. First give me time to process that you're back in the country and now working above me."

"You do realize who's sitting on the board of this insurance agency, don't you?"

"What does the board have to do with this?"

"Pretty much. It was more like I was surprised you were working here."

"What? I don't understand a word you're saying. But I'm also too tired now to talk about the board or my work."

"That's why I was hoping you'd have time to talk this weekend."

"Yes, but I don't have time. And I won't next weekend either, if you get the idea to ask. You see, I have to work on Saturday, and after that I'm going to a concert with my wife."

"It would be quite important if you and I talked, though."

"Phew Mr. Wang, you're getting on my nerves sir. I can only tell you repeatedly, I'm not ready to talk to you yet." Replied Zhan. Then, before Yibo could say anything else, Zhan tried calling security again and finally reached someone. "We'll be out of here in five minutes." Said Zhan to Yibo afterwards.

"Do you want me to drive you home?"

"No thanks. You better go home to your family. I'll take a cab."

"But you don't have to. I have to go that way anyway."

"You're not giving up, are you?"

"No."

"All right. But don't you dare to start wanting to talk again. Then I'll get really mad."

"I promise I won't start that again. Not tonight, anyway."

"Um, yeah. Whatever." Replied Zhan.

A few minutes later, someone from security finally came and unlocked the door for them. They took the elevator down and went into the parking garage. Zhan wanted to sit in the back seat and Yibo looked at him confused and asked him if he was afraid to sit in the front. Zhan shook his head and sat in the passenger seat and buckled his seat belt.

As Yibo started the engine, Lana called Zhan and asked him anxiously where he was. "I'm on my way home now, don't worry." He said. He wondered why Yibo's wife didn't call him. They are married and have a child together after all, shouldn't she be worried if her husband and father of her child doesn't come home or contact her?

This question was on Zhan's mind almost the whole way home. But he didn't dare to ask Yibo about it. If only for fear that Yibo would then say again that he wanted to talk to Zhan. So he kept silent until they arrived at Zhan's house.

Zhan got out of the car and saw the front door open. Lana waved at him and Zhan returned it. "She looks really pretty." Said Yibo from the driver's seat.

"Mhm, she's very pretty." Replied Zhan. What else could he say? It was the truth, after all. "Okay, I'll be off then. Thanks for driving. I'll see you tomorrow." Said Zhan, closing the car door and running up to the house to Lana. He hugged Lana and they both waited until Yibo drove away before going into the house.

Without wasting time with explanations, Zhan ran upstairs to his bathroom, showered and then ate what Lana had cooked for them both for dinner. And then he told her about his 16 sold insurance policies and why he came home so late. Lana listened to him intently and wondered why Zhan wasn't ranting about Yibo today. Has Zhan come to terms with the fact that they are working together now?
