Chapter 17: Back to the beginning
This was the last update for now. Because I have to go to bed first. But don't worry, I'll continue later.
After clearing Yibo's belongings into Lana's room, which is Yibo's room from now on and the room right next to Zhan's room, the two sat down in the living room, where Zhan opened a bottle of wines to toast Yibo's new job and his moving in.
And Yibo had something else to announce that Zhan was already expecting, "I'm getting a divorce."
"It'll be quick. Anyway, that's how it was with me. Not even five minutes we sat with the lady at the counter." Replied Zhan sarcastically.
"So you guys are already divorced?"
"In a few days, the one month of waiting will be over and then we'll be officially divorced."
"I don't think my wife will make it that easy, though."
"Don't worry about that now. Tomorrow I'll call my father-in-law and then I'll talk to him about the lawyer. And he can take care of your divorce then, too."
"I don't think I've been as happy as I am today for a long time. I feel so incredibly relieved. And it's all thanks to you, Zhan."
"In a way, I owed you something, too. Because without me, your life would have been different."
"Don't say that."
"What?"
"Without you."
"Well, I mean, because of me, we got caught."
"I hope that's all you mean. Because I've never regretted being with you."
"I see it that way again now. And I'm glad we're friends now."
"Friends, yeah, haha. Say, you're not even wearing that necklace I gave you. I'm just seeing that now."
"So it was from you after all? I didn't know that because there was no card or anything. I was honestly afraid it was from He Peng."
"Pah, like he'd be able to afford it. To be honest, I bought this with my first real paycheck back then and I always wanted to give it to you."
"Wow, thanks. It's really pretty and the panda pendant is cute."
"I immediately thought it would suit you. Can I put it on you?"
"Oh yeah sure." Replied Zhan. He gave Yibo the necklace and he stood behind Zhan who was sitting in the armchair and put the necklace on him. Zhan got goosebumps when Yibo's fingers stroked the back of his neck. But again, he fought down the rising feeling.
"Can I tell you something Zhan? Something I noticed?"
"Yes, of course."
"I thought you were cute back then. You with your big glasses and cuddly cheeks. But you've topped yourself once more, and now you're not only cute, but you look really handsome."
"Oh haha, thanks. You've changed visually too though. I mean sure, that's still you, but even more handsome. Kind of, anyway. So, you know what I mean."
"Mmm, you seem nervous Zhan."
"No, well, maybe a little. Tell me, then the other gifts were from you too or?"
"Sure. What did you think?"
"I thought it was He Peng. He's been so weird the last few days. So overly friendly and he kept grinning at me."
"Well, probably because he noticed every time I put something on your desk. Imagine that. A few days ago he told me to hold on and that maybe I had a chance with you."
"What?"
"Yeah, he seems to be noticing a lot more than we think. He also asked me how long we've known each other and if we've been a couple before because we're so familiar with each other."
"He's really weird. I mean sure, he has a nice side in him somewhere too. But mostly he gives me the creeps."
"You know what I'm looking forward to the most?"
"What?"
"To see my mother's face when I tell her I'm quitting and getting divorced. Luckily, I'm still on probation and can quit at any time without giving a reason. So she can't hold me to a contract or a notice period."
"That's very good. And I bet her look will be historical."
"I think so, too. Oh, you know, when I found out you worked at the insurance agency, I really had wondered. At that time my father knew who you were and so did my mother. But neither of them seemed to mind that you worked for them."
"I have never met your father. But your grandfather and he was really cool. He praised me a lot and always told me I should really meet his grandson."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I just didn't know who his grandson was. I didn't realize that until now, after you told me everything."
"Maybe I should have asked him for help then. Instead of going to the musical with you, we should have gone to him."
"I don't know if that would have done any good. It's hard to say."
"Mhm right again. Oh Zhan, what about your parents now?"
"Oh, yeah. I want to try to reconcile with them. After all, they broke off contact with me when I married Lana. Maybe they'll take me back into their family when they find out that Lana and I are divorced. And I also plan to tell them the truth about the real reasons behind the marriage."
"So you want to out yourself?"
"I think it's long overdue. There was a time when I thought they already knew."
"Oh really?"
"Mmm, that was just after I moved to Shanghai for university. They kept asking me if I wasn't afraid if my boyfriend came back and couldn't find me here."
"Who did they think your boyfriend was?"
"I think they thought of you. I mean, you were the only one I ever brought home."
"That's right. Your parents had once told me you had never brought home a friend before. And I remember once your mother asked me how far along we were. I just didn't know how she meant it."
"It's possible they both knew it already."
"Speaking of that, because of what my wife said at the Christmas party, about my manhood. I hope you don't believe that."
"What, exactly? That you would be incapable of pleasuring her?"
"Yeah right."
"Phew, I don't see why I should believe that. I remember it differently."
"Mhhh, those were good times."
"Hey, keep your mind on the juvenile side."
"I'm still allowed to reminisce, aren't I?"
"Uh yeah sure. But can you do that without talking about it?"
"Why? Didn't you like it then?"
"I did, but it's not appropriate right now. I mean we just reached friendship status."
"Yeah, for who knows how long." Murmured Yibo.
"What?"
"Nothing. I said it took a long time, after all."
"Yeah right."
"So Zhan, all back to the beginning with us?"
"Back to the beginning? We're already past that."
"Good, then it's not such a long way to go."
"Which way?"
"You'll find out soon enough. But for now, let's toast. After all, we have today to celebrate."
"Okay." Replied Zhan, confused. What kind of way was Yibo talking about?
The two spent the rest of the evening together, drinking the wine, watching a movie, and then each went to their room to sleep.
They both lay awake in their beds for quite a while, watching their room doors. As if they were waiting for the other to join them in their room.
Zhan felt the returning feelings for Yibo more and more inside him. Rather, he had felt all day as if Cheng had been right and Zhan had simply hidden the feelings for Yibo somewhere inside himself and protected them with the marriage shield.
But it also made Zhan think. Because, he had already disappointed and hurt Yibo once, therefore making his life harder. He was afraid that his feelings for Yibo would fully erupt again, that he would get involved with Yibo again, if Yibo would still want him at all, and then hurt Yibo again.
Although he told himself all along that he would put everything at the beginning with Yibo. But the more time he spends with him, the more he realizes that this is not possible. If he had really already gotten over his feelings for Yibo, he might have been able to fall in love again in the meantime. Then he could have built up a friendship with Yibo and wouldn't have to constantly put his heart back to calm now.
But before he can and wants to even think about how he feels about Yibo and what he really still feels for him, he first wants to help Yibo out of his crisis. That also means helping him with his divorce and contesting his father's will.
And then Zhan also first wants to re-establish the contact with his parents, to reconcile with them. Before that, he did not allow himself to even let out his own feelings and even think about something like love happiness.
Although it was already night and Zhan was just about to fall asleep, Zhan received a call that did not allow him to sleep. It was Cheng, asking Zhan anxiously if he knew where Yibo was. Apparently, Yibo's mother was driving everyone and everything crazy because she couldn't find Yibo.
Not knowing if Yibo wanted his mother to know where he was, Zhan crawled out of his bed and went to Yibo's room. To Cheng, he had said before that he would try to call him and then call back. He knocked on Yibo's door and he responded immediately.
Zhan went into Yibo's room and told him about Cheng's call. Yibo was less than thrilled to hear that his mother was looking for him. And he clearly said that he didn't want his mother to know where he was living now.
So Zhan called Cheng and said, "I'm sorry. I did reach him, but he didn't tell me where he is now either. He wants to rest for a few days and then he will contact his mother." Yibo nodded.
Zhan sat down on the edge of Yibo's bed and talked for a moment more with Cheng, who complained that Yibo's mother was annoying. When Zhan suddenly felt Yibo stroking his back with his fingers, he had to pull himself together to keep from suddenly laughing out loud because it tickled so much.
With a suppressed laugh, Zhan said to Cheng, "Well, there's been a lot going on these past few days, and I can understand why Yibo just needs space and rest." He almost bit his tongue when Yibo suddenly knelt behind him on the bed and gave Zhan a kiss on the back of his neck.
Zhan turned around to Yibo, who smiled at him before grabbing Zhan and pulling him into the bed beside him. Zhan almost revealed himself to Cheng when he nearly accidentally squealed in shock as Yibo pulled him to him.
Cheng continued to scold around while Zhan and Yibo lay side by side in bed, looking into each other's eyes. Yibo pulled Zhan closer to him and caressed his cheek. Almost soundlessly, he whispered, "You are beautiful."
Zhan felt his cheeks redden and heat up. His heart raced and the tingling in his stomach, spread throughout his body, just as it had then. "Cheng? It's already 2:30 am and I'm really tired. Let's talk again later, okay?" Said Zhan, who had almost forgotten that he was still on the phone with Cheng.
And as if Cheng knew exactly what was going on with Zhan, he said, "Have fun, both of you." And laughingly ended the phone call.
Zhan was still holding his cell phone tightly to his ear, even though the call had already ended. Yibo carefully took the phone from his hand, put it on the nightstand, and stroked Zhan's cheek again. "I would never have willingly broken up with you Zhan." Yibo whispered before he kissed Zhan.
