prologue - chased
Ariella Mermada breathed quietly as she crouched in the Dumpster. The three men were walking around, trying to find her. They had com links in their ears and were talking noisily, showing off their unprofessionalism. She peeked out of the tiny crack from the lid and noticed each of them had at least two guns. Damn...They walked around cautiously. She pulled up her brown hair into a ponytail as softly as she could.
But then a wrapper crackled under her shifting foot.
"What was that?" one of them said, perking up. Ari scolded herself for making the miniscule sound sound. She stood up slowly.
"I think it's from that Dumpster," the other commented. They nodded at each other, and two walked over while the third stayed behind to guard. Ari readied herself.
Once the men were close, she burst open the lid, hitting one in the chin. He fell in pain, blood dripping from his split lip. The other raised his gun at her, but she yanked it out of his hands, jumping down to the ground and shooting his legs. He yelled out obscenities as he hopped around like a rabbit. Ari tucked the gun in her hand, aimed at the startled third guard, and shot him in the chest. He stumbled back, slowly bleeding out, and she bolted.
As she ran, she heard more men shouting after her. Ari grinned and ran harder, backpack full of money and clothes hitting her back. She held the gun with ease, ready to shoot anyone who tried to attack her. She heard people's footsteps behind her, and she twisted the corner into an empty lot. Her pursuers continued to run.
They started shooting at her, and Ari had to duck and dodge bullets. One came close to her leg, and she ran even harder. Her legs were burning like hell, but the adrenaline was burning more. She saw some men coming at her on the street in front of her, and she shot at their general direction. They were distracted for a few seconds, enough for her to run near an apartment building and onto a crowded New York sidewalk.
Now, civilians were staring at them in fear and awe. Some mothers steered their children away from the running girl who had a gun, but most people seemed frozen in place. Ari used this to her advantage, ducking and going around the various figures. Since she was smaller than the men, she was able to slide through the crowd, snake-like. Her pursers resorted to roughly pushing people out of the way as they chased her.
Ari ran into another alleyway and cursed quietly as she hit a tall fence. She looked up t the metal links that reached at least three feet above her head. She took off her backpack and debated about climbing the rusted silver.
"She's in here!" a voice yelled. Too late for climbing, she thought. Plan B. Ari turned and faced the men as they reached the closed off alley. Her hand was heavy with the dark weapon. She fiddled around the trigger with her deft fingers.
"Freeze, freak!" a man said. He held up a large gun aimed right at her head. Ari tilted her head.
"Be careful!" another said. "I heard she's crazy." Ari mentally rolled her eyes.
"How can she be crazy?" the man with the large gun laughed. He sauntered closer to her, something she didn't like at all. "She's like thirteen!" His associate put his hands up.
"Whatever you say," he said. The man turned his attention back on Ari.
"Ok, freak, you can come with us by yourself or you can get knocked out by this taser gun. I'd advise the first one." He charged up the gun, and it glowed bright blue. Ari was unimpressed. This was the best team the business could hire? There must have been a budget cut or something.
I'll go with my own option, she thought, smiling. They all stepped back in anticipation. She counted six fingers hovering over high-tech gun triggers like anxious ghosts. Ari concentrated, silencing her pounding heart.
BANG!
Another day, another kill.
