Chapter 6

Chaeyoung buries her face deep in the pillow and it takes all her might not to cringe at herself. She had grasped her phone too quick the moment she saw Jungkook's name on the screen of her phone and the word 'Hi' had flown out of her mouth in haste.

"Wow, have you really been expecting me to call?" he chuckles on the other line.

Chaeyoung scoffs. "Not at all."

"I'm certain that I heard an excitement just now."

She gulps, clears her throat a second later. "Well, I'm certain that you heard it all wrong," she counters.

"Fine," he says, and she can imagine him grinning. "Whatever you say, charity girl."

"Don't call me that," she sighs, feeling regretful about how she spoke to him earlier in the day.

She doesn't mean to speak to him that way. She pushes the offer to him not just because she wants to help him get out of his misery, but she also is desperate herself. She doesn't think she has time to find another person to help her for the wedding. Maybe he's right, that she can easily get anyone to go with her. But how many guys out there that she can trust not to screw things up? It's not that she trusts him with her whole heart, but his action on the night she was drunk tells her a lot about him already.

And maybe, another reason why the offer still stands for him is because he's attractive, but no one has to know that.

"What do you want me to call you, then? Babe?"

"What?" she almost chokes on the air she breathes on. "Why would you call me that?"

"You told me to call you if I changed my mind," he says. "Since I'm calling you, which means, I have changed my mind which means I have accepted your offer, so technically we're dating now. Aren't we?"

Chaeyoung feels heat rising on her cheeks. Her heart pounds hard and she can listen to them clearly. "Fake dating," she corrects. "We're fake dating."

"I can't call you babe, then?"

"No."

"Baby girl?"

"What on earth-"

"Love?"

"No!" she firmly says, blushing further. "Okay, since you accepted the offer, send me your bank account number and the amount you need. I'll transfer you the money," she says everything quickly and ends the call.

Damn it. Why is he being so flirty? It has been too long since she has faced a flirty person that she doesn't know how to respond properly without getting too flustered.

Her phone dings, Jungkook's sent her the details and she does the transaction immediately, informs him when the confirmation has been sent to her and she expects to see him reply to her, but his response is in a form of a phone call, which makes her halt her breathing. She squeezes her eyes shut momentarily.

"What?"

"Are you busy?" he asks.

"Um. No. Why?

"Great. I called to say thank you."

"That's all? You could just text me," she rolls her eyes.

"Not just that," he chuckles. "Since you're not busy, don't you think we should discuss on this whole thing? You know, the details. You don't actually expect me to show up only on the wedding day, right?"

"Is it necessary?" she asks, forehead creasing.

"It is, if we're really going to be 'fake-dating'. I think it's still important to know about each other. So, everything can go smoothly. So, this whole fake thing will seem real to that Chan-whatever-his-name-is dude."

"Chanyeol," she corrects with a sigh. "His name is Chanyeol."

"Yeah, Chanweol."

"It's not Chanweol, it's Chanyeol," Chaeyoung grins.

"Chanheol. Okay. So-"

"Chan. Yeol," she chuckles.

"Chan. Eol. So, what do-"

"It's yeol. Chan with a 'yeol' at the back," she collapses to the bed and smiles wider.

"Right, charcoal. Whatever. I don't really care," Jungkook says flatly, and she finds herself laughing. "It doesn't matter if I know how to pronounce his name or not. I'm not going to be in a fake relationship with him. Let's get over the details on us."

Chaeyoung bites her lips and stares at the ceiling. "I don't think people will be too nosy to know the details on us. Maybe we should just get to know the basic things."

There's silence and Chaeyoung wonders if she has said something wrong.

"Chaeyoung," he says after a few seconds and she hums in response, finding herself focusing on his voice expectantly. "I don't do things half-assed. I'm going to attend the wedding with you, and I can't afford to be awkward around people I've never met before. Things have to go naturally between us. I have to be able to answer stuff about you. I can't risk myself being exposed as a fake boyfriend who fakes dating for money."

Her expression falls. He's right. Why hasn't she thought about it before?

"Imagine, when someone asks me, imagine charcoal asks me what I like about you and my answer is 'I like when she snores in her sleep' when you don't actually snore. Man, how weird that would be," he says. "Do you snore in your sleep?"

Her brows furrow as a smile begins to pull at her face again. "I don't know."

"I guess that's for me to find out."

"What?" she swallows, blush creeps on her face.

"Nothing," he says. "So, what do you like? What do you dislike? I need to know what my girlfriend-" he pauses and corrects himself, "fake girlfriend's fetish and pet peeves are, and she needs to know mine. Favorite colors, hobbies, favorite TV shows, favorite singer, favorite actor, favorite cousin. All those things matter, you know. So that we can act more naturally around people. Also, are you right-handed or left-handed?"

She pauses, takes her time to take a breather. "That's a lot of questions. Left."

"Left-handed. Okay. Well, don't worry, we'll go over everything slowly. I have all night to spend getting to know you," he says more softly on the other line and Chaeyoung ignores the way her guts twirl. "I hope you'll have all night to spend getting to know me too. I'm right-handed, by the way."

Chaeyoung wets her lips and swallows the lump of nervousness in her throat. "Okay."

"Okay, before I forgot, I want to put a condition on this whole agreement."

Her brows knit, thinking of any possible amount of money he may be asking. "Is it something hard to fulfill? Do you want more money?"

Jungkook chuckles softly. "I want to take you out on dates."

"What?" she breathes. "Um. Why?"

"So I can get to know you better?"

"Um. Why?"

"For this whole thing to be a success? For it to be believable?" She silences herself and Jungkook exhales softly. "I don't think I can get to know you more just by phone calls. We need to get our story straight, yeah, but we also need to be comfortable enough with each other for the act to look natural."

"Um..."

"Any experience acting in movies or dramas or CFs?"

"What? Um... No?"

"Me too," he chuckles. "But that's not an excuse for us to not being able to act naturally, you know? How about acting degree? Do you have one?" he asks.

"Um, no..."

"More reason for us to practice it," he says. "Practice makes perfect, am I right?"

She hums before saying a soft 'okay'.

He has a really good point there. She can't imagine not seeing him at all for days and weeks and then suddenly they are meeting each other during the wedding where they have to act like people who have been together for some time yet they're both awkward around each other.

She, too, can't risk being exposed hiring someone to be her boyfriend just so that she doesn't look like a loser in front of Chanyeol and his fiancée. She can't show to him that she has not moved on from their relationship that has been long over. If she's so obviously awkward around Jungkook during the wedding, it's going to be another embarrassing day for her.

"Is that like your habit?" he asks.

"What's like my habit?"

"Um."

Chaeyoung rolls on her bed, face creases in confusion. "Um, what?"

"You're doing it again."

"What am I doing again?"

"You say 'um' a lot. Is that your habit?"

"Um... I don't know, never realized."

"That's another one." Jungkook's soft laugh through the phone travels to her ear and resides in her head. "It really is your habit," he says. "That's cute."

Maybe Chaeyoung will wake up with a natural blush in the morning.
