Emergence

Jules ran out of the shed towards the truck as it sped up the drive. Findlay stepped into the morning sunlight, wiped his hands on a rag and tossed it on the ground, his face perplexed as the four-wheel drive pulled up.

"What the fuck?" Findlay ran.

The driver's side door slamming made Fin focus on Cody. A sudden fear for her father pounded in her head. When he opened her door, she slid across the seat but he took her by the upper arm and pulled her out of the vehicle.

"No! Dad! Stop!"

"Fin!" Findlay yelled as he covered the distance between them. "What the hell have you done to my daughter? You bastard! I'll fucking kill you!"

Cody scoffed, "Yeah... I'd like that." He nudged Fin in the back to make her step towards her father.

Findlay threw his arms around her and then lifted her face. Fin's jaw was red and inflamed. Her eyes were puffy and bloodshot. He held her at arm's length and ran his gaze over her. She wore nothing but a man's mud-stained t-shirt. Her knees were torn and bleeding.

"You cunt! You fucking cunt!" Findlay released her and then threw himself on the man who had taken his daughter. His fist landed hard on the younger man's mouth splitting his lip. A trickle of blood ran from the tear.

"Is that the best you can do old man?" Cody sneered as he held his arms wide and dropped to his knees.

Findlay went at him again.

"No! Dad! Don't!" Fin slumped to the ground as she pleaded, "He's... he's... not Cody! I don't want him to hurt you!"

Pulling his barrage of punches Findlay looked with love at his daughter. She sat huddled against the front tyre of the LandCruiser. "I need to, Fin, to take care of you," he said then lunged again.

When Roy and Ben pulled into the Hamilton driveway, they saw two men fighting.

"Jesus, Ben! Hit it before they kill each other!" Roy yelled.

"You got it, boss." Ben punched the accelerator and skidded to a halt beside the mud-encrusted Toyota. He dived out of the police vehicle and grabbed hold of the larger man's forearm as it was being lifted in the air to pound into Findlay Hamilton's stomach. "Stop! Stop right there!"

Ben gave them a quizzical look. This wasn't right. The man was on his knees. Findlay's face was unmarked but this man's leaked blood like a broken tap.

He looked at Ben in a daze and wiped blood from his nose with the back of his free hand.

"Are you, Cody Compton?" Ben asked as he peered into the face of the man, whose image he had in his pocket.

"No."
