Chapter 4
Third person pov
Naruto looked around the room curiously. After finally getting the nurses to release the boy, Minato had brought him straight to the T&I headquarters for questioning. It had been confirmed that, no, he most definitely wasn't registered as a Konoha shinobi. He gnawed on the inside of his cheeks. They'd taken his Konoha headband, and it made his forehead feel uncomfortably bare. He was just so used to it being there...
Naruto's eyes shifted to the far wall of the interrogation room. He could feel four chakra signatures behind it. His eyes moved to each one. He'd always been an excellent sensor, and during the war his sensed had most definitely sharpened. He could almost see their bodies through the one way glass.
Minato took a step to the right, and Naruto's eyes followed. He was a sensor, which was rare in Konoha for one reason or another. It was odd, and astonishing. These walls should have blocked him from feeling anything outside the room he was currently situated in. And yet they didn't. His eyes continued to dart from person to person, his body shifting uncomfortably as the seconds ticked by.
"Interesting." The Third Hokage noted. A much younger Inoichi Yamanaka nodded, along with the head interrogator of that time, who went by the name Daisuku. He was a tall, lean man with sharp features and a long nose that made him look far more intimidating. His cheek bones were sharp and narrow, and his expression seemed to be locked in a deadly grimace.
"A sensory type." Minato noted. "But if he were an enemy, why would he reveal a skill like that?"
"To throw us off, maybe." Daisuku clicked his tongue. "He's not from Konoha; that much we know. Yet he has a forehead proctor. For all we know, his injuries could have come from a fight with some of our own." The man made a fair point, but the odd feeling into Minato's stomach told him that was far from true. He didn't know why, but every nerve in his body told him to trust this boy. This boy whom they knew nothing about, and who looked freakishly similar to Minato himself.
"Hokage-sama, may we begin questioning him?" Inoichi was eager and curious. Anyone would be after taking a glance at the odd boy. The circumstances he'd arrived here under were far from normal, and his hiate was unrecorded. He bore a striking resemblance to the famous Yellow Flash of Konoha, and had amazing healing abilities unlike any any they'd ever seen before.
"Of course." The Hokage said, pulling open the door. He and Inoichi were going to go in fora softer approach, but if the boy resisted or refused, they'd be forced to send in Daisuku, who was currently in charge of recording everything the blonde in the interrogation room said.
Naruto looked startled when The Third Hokage stepped into the room, his blue eyes widening. The Third watched several emotions. Shock, guilt, maybe a little shame, and overall, love. Not the combination he was expecting. It nearly made the elder man flinch as the blonde forced his eyes away as though it were painful to do so. The Hokage took a whiff from his pipe. This boy, Naruto, was either a very excellent actor, or he was hiding something deeper than simply being a 'spy.'
Inoichi stepped in next. Naruto looked even more emotional than before, eyes widening, and face going pale as a sheet as he stared at him. He'd looked at the Third the same way, but this was stronger. Inoichi twitched at the emotion-filled gaze. "Are you okay, Naruto? You look like you've seen a ghost." Inoichi said lightheartedly as he and the Hokage took a seat across from him. Naruto's eyes followed Inoichi in absolute horror.
"Naruto?" The Third asked carefully. "Are you alright, son?"
Naruto flinched, but continued to stare at Inoichi. Images of not only his death, but his daughter's too, flashed through his mind. Like a broken record, they replayed. The horror he felt when he realized where that tailed beast bomb was going. The way Sakura screamed when he had to forcibly drag her away from the body of their dear friend. Of their dear sister.
"Get a hold of yourself." Kurama hissed. "Naruto-"
"I'm sorry." Naruto lowered his head. "I'm so, so sorry."
"What are you sorry for, Naruto? Did you do something?" Inoichi asked softly. This boy was clearly more traumatized than they thought. Behind the glass, Minato frowned, his heart clenching. He'd seen that look before, but never on someone as young as Naruto. It made his chest tighten, and his lungs suddenly felt small and inadequate. He took a few deep breaths in an attempt to get the feeling to go away. This was no his friend, and this certainly wasn't his kid. He didn't need to feel this way.
"She died before I could get there." Naruto shook his head, forcing a smile onto his face that made Hiruzen and Inoichi both flinch back. It was pained, but almost convincing. "Sorry about that! I'll... it'll be alright. What are your questions? I'm ready to go, believe it!" He grinned, blinking away his tears. He could stop everyone from dying. He could stop it all. He would stop it all.
"What's your full name, Naruto?" Inoichi finally asked, clearing his throat and looking down at his clipboard. Naruto's grin turned real, a fire alighting in his eyes. His name was his pride. It was something his parents and dearly departed sensei, Pervy Sage, had given to him.
"Naruto Uzumaki, believe it!" Naruto brightened considerably as he said it. Every time he did, he felt empowered. Confident. He didn't know why, but his name felt like proof that he could get through everything. Even this.
Inoichi smiled at the boy's burst of enthusiasm, writing something down. "And where were you born, Naruto?"
"Well, here in Konoha, of course!" Naruto paused, eyebrows furrowing. "Actually, I guess I was just outside the village. Sorry about that." His thoughtful expression vanished, and he was smiling again. The Third Hokage smiled.
"Who are your parents, Naruto?" The Hokage asked. "And where are they?"
"I'm an orphan." Naruto frowned, and it was true. He was an orphan. "They're dead. I... I never really knew them. A few people told me some things about them, but..." He trailed back. Again, not a lie. He'd been told some things about his parents, but nobody told him just who his parents. They'd told him themselves when they appeared in his mindscape.
"I'm sorry to hear that, Naruto." Inoichi said. Orphaned children weren't uncommon, and as far as he could tell, Naruto hadn't lied. "Where did you get your headband?"
"My sensei!" Naruto answered immediately, eyes shining. "He gave it to me when I finally graduated the academy!"
"We don't have you on record." The Third Hokage said. Naruto paused, blinking. Ah, that's right. He wasn't... alive... nor would Iruka-sensei's headband be registered yet. He was probably still in the academy, or maybe not entered in it at all. It was actually quite possible he'd just now been born! The thought was weird, but...
"Hey, I don't do the record thing, believe it." Naruto shook his head. "Why's it my fault I'm not registered?"
Minato blinked. That was an... an oddly fair point. Although, they were quite thorough in their documenting. Especially in war time. It was rare that anyone ever slid through the cracks, but if this kid really grew up with no one, Minato supposed it was possible. It would have been far better if someone could confirm that they knew him.
"Naruto-kun, I'm afraid we can't simply brush it off as a mistake. You could be a spy." The Hokage said kindly. Naruto huffed a little, but nodded anyway. Technically he sort of... was a spy. Only he wasn't here to spy! He was just here to gain residency and kill one of their important council members, apprehend one of their sannin, and bring about world peace!
All of which are very noble.
"How old are you, Naruto?" Inoichi shifted back to some easier questions.
"Nineteen." Naruto said proudly. "I'll be twenty next October!"
"What date?" The Hokage smiled at the boy's exuberance. He was either a really good spy, or a really dumb one, if he was a spy at all.
"The tenth, believe it." Naruto answered smoothly. Kurama watched on in silence, ready to scream at Naruto to stop what he was saying at any moment. He would have preferred it if the boy had lied, but he seemed to lack the ability to do it without looking completely and totally guilty. He was too good and honest to be a ninja, honestly. Kurama scoffed and shook his head.
"Who was your academy sensei, Naruto?" Inoichi asked.
Naruto got a faraway look in his eye, but answered anyway. "I-I- uh... Iruk...u-sensei." He sputtered out the false name with nothing but guilt and apology in his eyes, and he forced a grin. Kurama groaned, his previous point proven. There was a reason Naruto seldom ever went on infiltration missions that required him to go undercover. And the one he had gone on, to that damned prison, he hadn't even known about.
Inoichi and the Hokage shared a look. Minato bit his lip behind the glass. A very clear lie, without a doubt. Inoichi sighed and set his clipboard down on the table.
"Naruto, I'm going to request access to your memories. It would clear a lot up." Inoichi stood up. The Blonde didn't have a choice, but being let in willingly was easier than not. Naruto began to sputter and squirm as Inoichi approached him, leaning back from his hand.
"I-I don't think that's a good idea, believe it!" Naruto ducked under Inoichi's hand. Hiruzen's eyebrows raised at the desperation of the move. "I'm totally not lying, but isn't it illegal to e-"
Kurama groaned again as Inoichi's hand found its way onto his forehead, and just like that, the two blondes were sucked into Naruto's mind.
