Chapter 2

He hasn't even asked me one question on this drive so far. Just silence. Why is this so awkward? Guess I will break the silence.

"Fox?"

"Yes Gemma?

"Why did you choose to be on the X-Files?"

"The truth."

"Yes I want to know the truth."

"No, that's why." He says laughing a little.

"Oh." I shy away looking out the window.

"It would seem, out of everyone who works for the FBI. I'm the only one who believes, or cares, about these cases. Seeking the truth as to what happened during these cases, is my drive. It's why I choose to be on the X-Files, as well as finding out what happened to my sister."

"Oh. Well I hope we figure out the truth on this case."

"We will. You'll see working with me isn't what others make it out to be."

"The others say you're a nut job. Except for agent Scully of course."

"Oh I know what they call me, I trust that you will see me differently."

"I hopefully will." I say touching his hand as it rests on the arm rest.

Turning off the exit from the highway, we stop and get some gas.

"Here, go pay the clerk." Fox hands me some cash.

"Okay." Taking the cash I go into pay.

"Are you's here about the missing teens?"

"What makes you think that we are?" I say handing over the cash.

"You both look like important people."

"Oh. Well yes we are as a matter of fact. I'm special agent Montgomery and that's my partner special agent Mulder."

"Those teens shouldn't have been out in the forest at night."

"Lots of people go to Allegheny and camp at night. Why would those particular nights be any different?"

"Just be careful out there in the forest. Things aren't always what they seem."

"We will." I tell the clerk with a puzzling look before leaving.

"What took you so long?" Fox asks.

"Sorry, the clerk asked me if we were here about the missing teens."

"Did you tell him we were? Did he give you any information besides what's in the file?"

"I told him we were and not really. He said those teens shouldn't have been out at night in Allegheny. He also said to be careful out in the forest and that things aren't always what they seem."

"Hmm, kind of ominous. Well let's head into town and find a place for the night."

I keep thinking about what the clerk said. He has to know something. Maybe he is in on whatever is happening to these teens. We get one of the inns in Marienville, Pennsylvania and park for the night.

Fox grabs both his and my bag and we head in.

"Hello, how can I help you folks tonight?" A chipper young lady asks us at the front desk.

"Yeah we would like a room with two beds."

"Um, Fox, I.."

"What?"

"I would like some privacy." I whisper to him.

"I'll look away." He says back to me smiling his coy smile.

"We do have a room with two beds left if you want it sir."

"Yes, thank you. Here's my information and how much?"

I start looking around the lobby of the inn while Fox finishes up. Nothing seems to be unusual, but there's still time.

"Okay, here's your keys. You two have a lovely night."

"Montgomery, let's go."

"Coming." We head up the elevator to our floor and go the room.

"I will take the bed closest to the bathroom." I say stepping into the room after Fox.

"Why?" He says turning around to face me.

"I'm not getting killed first." I say looking up at him.

Fox starts to laugh. "So you want me to get killed first? Or do you want me to protect you?"

I slip by him. "It's just something I've always done."

"Ah. Well I'm going to go take a shower. Read up on the case file and see if you can spot anything similar. Other than the fact that they were all teens."

"Okay." I sit on the bed as he walks in the bathroom.

MARSHA WALKER - 17yr old female
