19. Caught
" Are you sure we are at the right place? " Anika asked Prinku, worry clear in her tone.
Prinku shrugged " Well that's what google Maps says" Anika squinted trying to get a clear view.
After driving about two hours, the civilization slowly getting scantier by every mile, they had ended up on the outskirts of the city. The sun beat down on them, as they parked their car under a tree.
" Here try these" Prinku said shoving a binoculars into her hand " You'll see better "
Anika blinked at the binoculars " You brought this? "
Prinku frowned as if she were offended " Obviously because we are going to catch some criminals "
Anika was already shaking her head " No we ain't catching anyone. This is purely a observe and report missions" She fixed Prinku with a stern look "observe and report Prinku. We watch what they are doing, grab some evidence and head back to the cops cause that's their job"
Priyanka rolled her eyes " Am dead serious Prinku " Anika glared at her "It's my job to keep you safe and am no-"
" Wait a minute your job? Really ? "
Anika shrugged " You think Shivaay would let me live if anything happened to you on my watch? "
" God!" She snorted "When will you stop treating me like a little girl ! "
Anika folded her hands " Am only worried about you"
" Well am fine, thanks for babysitting me, but am fine"
Anika groaned " It's no-"
" Duck! " Prinku suddenly hissed slamming Anika's head down. A truck zoomed past them.
" They look big enough to carry girls " Prinku muttered peeking out.
Anika threw a worried look to what lay ahead if them. Tall trees and coarse bushes covered the ground, about a mile away there were glimpses of few buildings surrounded by a massive concert wall.
" How are we going to get through? " Anika whispered more to herself
"Climbing that is not even an option" Prinku sighed eyeing the huge wall.
" It looks like it's put up to keep whatever is in the inside from coming out, rather than the other way around "
" Like imprisoned girls? "
They both fell silent, the reality of the situation slowly settling upon them.
" Wait... A minute" Anika squinted in the binoculars, " This isn't just one building " She whispered, zooming in on something
" What is it?" Prinku leaned forward anxiously.
Anika pursed her lips " That wall right there is running for miles"
Prinku blinked " Which means... "
" We aren't just looking at one building, for all I could guess there might be some acres of land beyond that wall"
" Well what are we waiting for? "Prinku asked
Anika rubbed her forehead worriedly "this feels so wrong Priyanka"
" Listen, did you see that truck? Just imagine how many girls are in there right now, probably drugged with no idea what's going on"
" Exactly! It's just an imagination, we are here by a bunch of hunches, none of it is a fact! We are here because some chick gave us the address and because we are assuming that this is a kidnapping racket"
Prinku frowned " Lakshmi's death is a fact, the attacks on me are a fact, the accident that happened to me is a fact. These missing girls and the list of names, and the same area where they all disappeared from and the negligence of the cops in this issue are all facts! Anika don't you see!? " Her voice rose in volume in the end.
Anika held her head " What if something bad happens in there Prinku, these people, those attacks. Something terrible has happened here I can just feel it" Her fingers trembled as she ran them through her hair.
" Hey" Prinku caught her hand tightly " I can't assure you about what's going to happen in there, but whatever happens you'll have me and I'll get you out, but those girls in there don't have anybody and we can't walk away from this knowing we are just a mile away from saving them"
Anika nodded slowly " You're acting like me" She said softly " Usually am the one convincing you to do stupid shit"
Prinku grinned " I know. You're being a pussy like me right now" She slapped her arm " Common get out your big guns, and act like the hero you are"
Anika snorted " If anything happens to any of us, am so gonna kill you"
Prinku saluted her " Aye captain, now let's go"
" Ok" Anika straightened, " Here's the plan..."
Minutes later both the girls were plastered against the walls, hidden among the shadows, gripping each other's hands.
Acres of land stretched before them, a world set aside in a sharp contrast to the outside world.
The ground was a rough gravel, the one you'd be too scared to trip and scrape your skin till the bones, without a single leaf in site. Crows flew above them, cawing, as if to warn them of the intruders.
Hundreds of men, large and muscled with sweaty faces, walked around, carrying shovels and hammers.
Some seemed to be inludged
in manual labor where they were welding iron, or repairing large musty trucks, while some just sat in groups with bottles in their hands, hooting loudly.
No matter what work they did all of them had one thing in common, a large rifle strapped across their bodies.
" Are you getting all this? " Priyanka asked, quieter than a whisper.
" I think I so" Anika had a hard time holding her phone up, as her hands seemd to tremble endlessly.
" Who the hell are all these people? "
Suddenly a loud siren bellowed, the girls rammed their backs hard into the wall, hoping it would swallow them.
Their hearts pounded as they watched the men with the bottles rushed forward. The large iron gates groaned, about twenty men came, rounding up the truck.
The girls watched, too terrified to even breathe, as the truck slowly rolled forward, all the while with the men walking beside it.
It stopped at a grey building, which towered among the rest of the buildings, and was soon out of sight.
" We need to get with the truck" Prinku rasped.
" Are you crazy!? "
" We've come so far, we have to get evidence, I could release it on my news channel and we could get people's attention" She inhaled determined " Girls or no girls these men are not upto something good"
Anika exhaled sharply " Fine. Just stay close to me alright? "
Prinku gave a stiff nod and tiptoed carefully behind Anika. For the first time that day she wished they had bought some weapons, even a stick. But she didn't dare say it aloud. Saying it aloud would make both of them feel vulnerable.
They crept along the side of the wall, trying to blend into the shadows and make as little movement as they could.
" We just gotta get a look inside that truck " Anika rasped.
They had taken the long side of the wall, to avoid the gate.
It felt like a year when " There it is!" Prinku yelped suddenly pointing at the truck they had seen before " Shut up! " Anika hissed.
The truck was parked not a few miles away from them, just a few more tip toes and they could get out of there.
Their legs ached and sweat dribbled down their faces as the afternoon sun slowly set down.
Anika stopped ten feet away from the truck.
The area strangely looked vacant. Anika stilled, her gut twisting uneasily. Her eyes darted nervously around. None of the men were around.
" Let's go" Prinku nudged her back " What are we waiting for? "
Anika shook her head " Why aren't we caught yet? " She asked suddenly.
" What? "
" Acres of land, gaurded by over a hundred men. Yet we managed to walk across the whole arena without getting caught "
" Doesn't that mean we are pretty good? "
Anika's throat went dry " No. It's because they let us" She nodded above their heads.. And Prinku slowly followed her gaze.
She gasped. " They were watching us" The words were quieter than a whisper as they stared into a cctv camera aimed right at them.
" Took you long enough" A voice boomed out of a speaker somewhere.
Prinku jumped, pressing against Anika.
A spotlight flashed on their faces and they shielded their eyes. From between her fingers Anika watched men surrounded them, watching them with gleamy eyes, like a predator watches it's prey.
