12. Mr Selfish Omkara
Krishna’s head jerked up when someone rapped their knuckles against her desk “hey” she smiled looking up at the Mrs. Neeta “we got another one” she grumbled dropping a file onto her desk. She gave a disappointed glare towards a closed door “I’ll let him know” Krishna told her gently. Mrs. Neeta shrugged “as if that will make a difference.”
Krishna sighed, watching her walk away and slumping down in her seat to pick up her novel. She picked up the file and walked slowly to the closed door. She knocked hard and stepped in. Om peeked once from his book and continued to read.
Krishna cleared her throat “we got another one”
“Put it in the bin” he mumbled “I’ll take a look later”
She looked at the bin filled with files like the one in her hand. She pursed her lips “ok, how long are you going to keep doing this?” silence answered her “am talking to you”
“Really?” he mumbled without lifting his head “I thought you were talking to someone else cause you weren’t addressing me as sir”. Her lips pressed into a thin line “maybe I will when you start acting like a boss” she snapped.
Om peeked over his book “what is your problem now?” he groaned “Can’t we do this some other time?”
Krishna could feel fumes hissing out of her ear “you’ve been doing this for three weeks by now” she slapped the file on his table loudly “So no. we can’t do this later.”
He sighed putting down his book “alright. You have my undivided attention” he twined his fingers together placing his chin on them.
“It’s been three weeks since you come here and you haven’t even considered taking up projects, we get them literally every alternate day, but you dint even bother to take a look at them! You just let them rot in that bin”
“I know you are here against your will but that doesn’t mean you have to get the rest of us down too”
“Rest of you down? Am not even giving any work!”
“Exactly!” Krishna threw up her hands “while you are here for vacation some of us are here to work. Every day we come here laze around doing nothing! Then go home without the satisfaction of doing anything.” Om opened his mouth but Krishna beat him to it “I don’t expect you to understand how good the satisfaction of doing your salary’s worth and returning home feels like”
She took a deep breath, her cheeks flushed red “I understand you are just wanting the days to end so that you can go back doing what you like, but you were sent here to do a job, a job for which millions work their asses off to get where you are sitting right now, you have a team, those talents are just being wasted because Mr. selfish Omkara is too busy pitying his own life to step out of his shell and take a look at the world around him.”
She turned away ready to storm out when her phone slipped, clattering onto the floor, she cursed bending down to pick it up, she stood up fast and THHUMP! Her head bashed onto the overlying glass table. Her head reeled, and she hissed in pain slumping down she cupped her head.
She squeezed her eyes shut, wanting the room to stop spinning. “lemme see” a cool voice sounded dangerously close. Krishna opened her eyes finding Om crouched beside her. “no juts-“
He moved his big hand, placing it below hers “here?” his warm breath fanned against her face, her protests died in her throat.
He shuffled closer, his other hand cupped her face while the other gently rubbed her sore head. Krishna’s tummy dropped, blood rushing to her cheeks, her legs gave away and she plopped down, landing on her butt. She gasped, looking at Om with wide eyes, he started back at her startled. A beat passed and he burst out laughing. Krishna’s lips tugged at the corners.
He sat down leaning against the desk “you looked really mad a few seconds ago, now look at you” he grinned, Krishna’s smile simmered.
“You could’ve just told me, you know” he said softly “ you didn’t have to slam my desk and yell and all”
“I didn’t think you would listen” she shrugged.
“ you didn’t even try” Om pointed out. Krishna stayed quiet staring at her feet “sorry I lost it”
“yeah. I kinda deserved it. I guess I was being a selfish jerk eh?”
She looked at him. “ I mean all I was thinking was how to spend the days, just to show my dad. I never thought about the others, that they actually came here to do a job”
Guilt twisted her gut, she shouldn’t have yelled at him that way. No matter how mean he was to her she knew he had heart of gold, he could never hurt or do any injustice to anyone. Even though she had known him for a few months she felt he knew him inside out.
She watched him run a hand through his long locks “but am so scared to start anything, I have like no clue what to do”
“it’s ok, why do you think am here for?”
He looked at her. “I’ll help you out” she promised, her hands twitched to reach out for his, but she didn’t.
He exhaled and nodded “alright then. Go gather everyone for a meeting then” her eyes lit up and she grinned “aye aye sir” she leapt to her feet and held out her hand “common” she motioned him.
He paused before taking her hand gingerly “carful, you’ll hit yourself again”
“Am gonna be fine” she smiled.
