Being Me
"Beth! Get the hell out of bed!" My mom called from downstairs. I groaned and put my pillow over my ear. I heard someone stomp up the stairs and then my blanket got ripped off my body. "Bethany Nicole Hall! You are not going to be late on your first day of your senior year!" My mom grabbed my hand and pulled me out if bed, pulling me down the stairs.
"Okay, I get it." I said, wrenching myself out of her grip and standing up. My mother gave me a smirk and walked into the kitchen. I followed her and got down a bowl.
"What kind if cereal?" My mom asked. I looked at the choices and pointed at Lucky Charms. She passed it to me and I poured myself some.
"You know I don't like it when you call me Beth right?" I asked. It was Bethany or nothing at all.
"Well, I'm your mother and I endured seven long hours of child birth so I'll call you whatever I want." My mom smiled at me and I glared at her. "You know smiling is a better look for you." She told me, which caused my glare to deepen. I finished my Lucky Charms and went upstairs. I stared at my closet and thought of something to wear. I finally decided on my ripped shorts, a grey "dream on boys" muscle tee, and my turquoise Vans. I was straightening my hair when the doorbell rang. "I got it!" My mom shouted. I wasn't gonna get it anyway.
"Hey lady!" I looked in the doorway and my best friend Lindsey gave me a huge smile. I returned it and went back to my hair. Lindsey was my only friend who was a girl...the rest were boys.
"Nice outfit, rich kid." I teased her, as I looked at her yellow strapless hi-lo dress, and her white wedges. You couldn't forget her long curled blonde hair. Lindsey was the most popular girl in school and people told me often that it was luck that we were best friends.
"Shut up. At least I have the decency to try." She shot back. I raised my eyebrow at her and she rolled her eyes. Lindsey walked over and snatched the flat iron out of my hand. Within seconds she was finishing my long black hair. I pulled back a piece in the front and grabbed my phone.
"Time to go." I said walking out the door.
"Wait!" Lindsey shouted. I looked at her. "I got you a back to school present." She pulled out a white box out of her black Coach purse. I opened it and smiled at the contents in the box: the same purse she was wearing in grey.
"Thanks Lin." I hugged her and shouldered the bag after putting my stuff in it. We walked out to my hunter green Jeep Wrangler and got in.
"That top is staying up." Lindsey warned as I reached to open it. I stopped and lowered my hand. "Thank you." She added, smoothing down her hair. I turned the radio to B98.5 and was listening to some good old 80's music when Lindsey switched the station to Q100. She turned up the song and started singing:
Your hand fits in mine like its made just for me
But bear this in mind it was meant to be
"Oh hell no." I said changing it back to B98.5. Even though Lin and I were best friends we were very different. She was a preppy, girly, popular girl and, in case you haven't noticed, I'm a tomboy who would much rather spend my time playing sports than shopping.
"Are you ever gonna tell me why you don't like them?" Lindsey pouted.
"I told you, their music sucks and I'm pretty sure they are all gay." I answered. I could see Lindsey's mouth fall open.
"Over half of them have girlfriends!" She exclaimed.
"Okay well I'm pretty sure that the blonde one and the one who needs a haircut have a thing." I told her.
"You mean Niall and Harry?" I could see her purse her lips out of the corner of my eye. I started laughing uncontrollably and Lindsey looked at me like I was insane. "Hey can you stop at Starbucks?" I nodded and pulled into the lot. We pulled up to the drivethru.
"Hi welcome to Starbucks what can I get for you today?" A southern voice asked.
"One Venti Mocha Cookie Crumble and one Venti Cotton Candy Frap." Lindsey said.
"That'll be $7.34 at the second window." I pulled up and paid and she handed us the 2 drinks. I passed the Mocha Cookie Crumble to Lindsey and took a sip of my favorite Starbucks order.
"Thanks Linds." I said. She smiled.
"That'll be one day of no One Direction teasing." She giggled. I frowned and drove to the school.
"Who do you have for first?" I asked Lindsey as we walked up to our lockers.
"AP English with Lucas." She winced.
"Oh. I have Math with Reid." I replied we waved and walked to our classes. The pain was about to begin.

*FLASHBACK*
"Beth sweetheart your dad is on the phone." Ms. Watkins called. I stood up and told Lindsey that I would be right back.
"Hi daddy." I giggled into the receiver.
"Hey pumpkin! Are you and Lindsey having fun?" My dad replied, his voice sounded so happy.
"Yes sir. Lindsey's Barbie just met Ken. They are gonna get married." I told him. I heard his loud laugh on the other end.
"That's great kiddo!" He exclaimed.
"Are you going to pick me up?" I asked him. After all, I was only 4 and it was late for me.
"Of course Beth. Just let me pick you up a little surprise." My dad responded.
"I surprise? For me?" I gasped.
"Of course! Your birthday is tomorrow, so I thought I could give you an early gift." I smiled at his giving nature.
"Thank you daddy. I love you." I said. I gave the phone back to Ms. Watkins and walked back into Lindsey's bedroom. We played until my dad came.
"Sorry kiddo, but mom is waiting." My dad rubbed my head and I said good bye to Lindsey. We got in the car and out jumped a little Puggle puppy.
"Daddy! There's a puppy in the car!" I yelped.
"I know he's for you." He replied. I beamed and hugged his leg.
"Thank you so much daddy!" I yelled as I hugged the puppy.
"I'm gonna name her Dot!" I hopped in the back and we drove along the road. I was playing with Dot when the car jolted and I shut my eyes. I heard a huge crash and I opened my eyes: Dot was in my arms shivering and my dad had blood coming from his head. "Daddy?" I asked. "Daddy!" I shouted. I grabbed his cell phone and dialed the number I was told to dial in emergencies: 911.
"Don't worry sweetie, we'll be there soon." The dispatcher said. I just kept my eyes closed and cuddled Dot.
"Beth? Bethany?" I heard my mom call.
"Mommy?" I cried. She opened the car door and I hugged her and burst into tears. She carried me and Dot to her car and set us down. It wasn't too long after that when I was told my daddy was dead.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
"Ms. Hall?" I looked up at an expectant teacher.
"Um, 43?" I answered. The class giggled.
"The answer to who won the Civil War is 43?" The teacher asked. I shrugged my shoulders and the bell rang. "Study chapter 12 in your books." She called. I walked into the hallway and met Lindsey.
"43?" Lindsey asked me.
"I wasn't exactly paying attention." I replied. We got our stuff and walked to my car. I allowed Lindsey to listen to Q100 on our way back home.
"Are you a huge One Direction fan?" The radio asked. Lindsey nodded.
"Would you like a chance to meet all of the boys and possibly compete for them?" Lindsey nodded again. "Then go online to www.meetonedirection.com/show, and fill out your application to compete on a new game show. 25 lucky girls get chosen. One could be you." The commercial ended and Lindsey went online.
"Will you enter with me?" Lindsey whined. I raised my eyebrows at her. "Come on! The chances of you being chosen is like 1 in a million." She told me. I reluctantly nodded and she clapped.
"Say that I can ride the unicycle...and juggle." I laughed. Linds nodded and typed it in.
"And sent." She told me.
"If I get chosen I'm quitting." I answered.
"Well it says the contestants will be listed on the website in a week." Lindsey said.
"Okay. But until then I'm going to play as many sports as I can." I replied, pulling into the parking lot of the basketball court.
"No!" Lindsey whined.
"I'll be back in a sec. I promised Caleb that I would play a quick round with him." I responded and jumped out of the car. I was gonna kick his ass...he didn't stand a chance.
