Splice

Months passed for Kevin and Barbara. Their romantic relationship blossomed as their personal lives went about their daily business. Barbara continued to co-lead The Team as Batgirl. Kevin was a senior at Gotham University, and he had come to the conclusion that he wanted a career in the culinary arts because he liked to cook. Andrea even met Barbara, and she was happy to know Kevin found a love of his own. During Kevin and Barbara's romantic relationship, a new body modification trend called "Splicing," which combines human DNA with that of animals, was starting to take Gotham's fashion world by storm. It was a popular trend. Kevin even saw some of his classmates get "Spliced." Kevin didn't understand why anyone would do something so unnatural like that. This "Splicing" almost made plastic cosmetic surgery sound reasonable.

It was now the Friday night before spring break was to start. Kevin was out in the Batcave, putting on a stealth suit not dissimilar to the suits that The Team wore when on stealth missions. Barbara had decided to visit the cave, just to give her boyfriend a sendoff. She wandered down the upstairs, seeing him get ready. Kevin heard the sound of footsteps coming downstairs and assumed it was Alfred or his father. He turned around and saw it was his girlfriend. "Oh hey babe," he said while smiling at her, "I bet you're wondering about the stealth suit, eh?" Barbara nodded. "Yeah. Bruce mentioned you had a mission so I came to say goodbye," she told him, "but the suit's amazing."  Kevin smiled and blushed as he said, "Thanks. Us Waynes sure know how to look good in black. But yeah, Dad wants me to investigate Moreau Cosmetics, the company that's responsible for that Splicing trend. Dad suspects that they're using chemicals similar to the ones Kirk Langstrom used to become Man-Bat, and with that one werewolf that might have had something to do with the disappearance of Anthony Romulus and Dr. Achilles Milo. I'm the most inconspicuous, so I'll be able to do this mission, no fuss no muss." Barbara nodded in agreement. "You certainly look good in black," she said while adding, "be safe. I mean it. Come back to me in one piece." She placed a hand on his cheek. "I will," promised Kevin, "I swear to it. Cross my heart and hope to die, I'll even poke out my own eye. I love you Barbara." He gently hugged her. Barbara hugged him back, a small smile on her face with a giggle before she pulled away and kissed his cheek. "I love you too, Kevin. I'll be waiting for you when you return," she tells him. "I'll be looking forward to that," said Kevin as he smiled and kissed Barbara on the lips, "once this is done, it'll be you and me all spring break." He then put on his stealth mask and left the Batcave. Barbara kissed him back before watching him leave. However, there was something pulling in the pit of her stomach. Something didn't feel right...

Hours later, Kevin was inside Moreau Cosmetics; during closing hours, investigating everything. Kevin was smart like his father, and he was also an expert chemist. He learned everything about the chemicals Dr. Kirk Langstrom used when he unintentionally became Man-Bat. It was quite ironic that Dr Langstrom was attempting to use bat DNA as a means to cure his deafness, unintentionally creating a monster that would impact him, his wife Francine, and their children. And allegedly Anthony Romulus. Kevin studied the chemicals that Moreau Cosmetics used for Splicing, and its side effects. These people were as mad as Doctor Moreau himself! Kevin then went into a back corner and started a recording, "Batman, this is Kevin. Your deductions were correct. The base ingredients used for Splicing are the exact same chemicals that Kirk Langstrom used when he became Man-Bat. It's basically the Man-Bat formula mixed with any animal DNA, so it's a lot more advanced than the previous formula... and these people fail to mention the negative side effects. Side effects include increased aggression, some cases of decrease in intelligence, some worse cases where they act like a mindless animal, unable to speak, think, or reason like a human being. So the likelihood of losing your humanity when Spliced is extremely high... I wouldn't be surprised if this company had something to do with the Metahuman trafficking Nightwing and Weapon have been talking about..." Suddenly, a sharp needle stabbed into the back of Kevin's neck, and something was inserting inside him. Could have been a knockout juice. Kevin screamed in pain, and he did his best to fight unconsciousness. He was losing the fight to keep his consciousness. He then pressed send, the recorded message ensured to end up in the Batcomputer. Kevin then succumbed to unconsciousness.
