Seeing Andrea Again

The drive from Gotham to Bellevue took Bruce and Alfred less than two days to get there. Soon they made it to Bellevue. As they looked around the City in a Garden, Alfred said, "I must say, this city is far cleaner than Gotham City. Seems like a far more pleasant place to raise a child, wouldn't you agree Master Bruce?"

"It does have its perks," said Bruce. Soon Alfred drove to The Crossroads Mall, which was where the Half Price Bookstore that Andrea worked at resided in. "If you need me, I will be dozing off in the car, Master Bruce," yawned Alfred. "You've earned your rest Alfred," said Bruce, "I should talk to Andrea on my own." Bruce then went inside the bookstore, looking for Andrea. He went to the cash register and asked the cashier in his billionaire playboy voice, "pardon me, is Andrea Beaumont available to speak to?" The cashier looked at Bruce with surprise and asked, "Bruce Wayne? I'm quite surprised to see you here. If you wish to speak with our manager Miss Beaumont, I'll be happy to contact her right now." Bruce was surprised to find that Andrea was now a manager of a bookstore. The cashier then got out a phone and after dialing a number, said on the phone, "Miss Beaumont, we have a customer that would personally like to speak to you. Please come to the cash register." The cashier gave an encouraging thumbs up. A minute later, a woman came in. Bruce knew it was Andrea Beaumont. She looked older, and her light brown hair was starting to grey a little. But Bruce recognized her face. "Alright Bob, tell me which customer that would like to speak to me," said Andrea. Bruce casually said, "Hello Andrea."

Andrea gave a look of shock when she saw Bruce. She hadn't seen him in nearly 18 years! "Bruce??" she asked in shock, seeing how much older he'd gotten. Andrea soon regained her composure and said in a calm and professional voice, "Bob, if you don't mind, I'll speak to Mr. Wayne privately. Mr. Wayne, would you care to join me in my office?" Bruce nodded and said, "of course." Bruce then followed Andrea into her private manager's office. Andrea shut the door behind her, looking at Bruce. "Alright, how did you find me, Bruce?" Andrea asked in her serious tone of voice, "why are you here?" Bruce then spoke in his gruff voice, "how I found you were living in Bellevue doesn't matter Andrea. It's why I'm here that's more important." He looked around her office. "If you're here because of everything I did as The Phantasm, please... leave me be," begged Andrea, "I know what I did was wrong. I was so consumed with hate and anger, and I thought revenge was the only answer... but I'm a different person now, Bruce. I've changed, for the better." Just seeing Bruce brought back many memories for Andrea, memories she tried to block. "Andrea, I'm not here because of that," said Bruce, "your motives are understandable. If things were different, I probably would have ended up like you, especially with Jason gone..." Andrea tenderly touched Bruce's face. "Jason was one of your other sons?" she asked sympathetically, earning a nod from Bruce. She could see his pain and vulnerability. "I'm so sorry you lost him..." she said with genuine sympathy. Bruce allowed himself to shed tears. Andrea's motherly instincts kicked in, and she wiped his tears. "I won't lie Bruce... I've missed you," she admitted, "my feelings for you haven't changed."

"I do think of you every now and then," said Bruce, "speaking of children... is it true that we... have a son...?" Andrea sighed, "I've wanted to tell you for many years Bruce, but I didn't have the courage... You were so angry with me after what I did, and I was so scared... I was afraid you wouldn't want anything to do with me, or Kevin..." Bruce placed his hand on Andrea's shoulder and said, "Andrea, if I'd known you were pregnant with our son, I would have helped make ends meet for you and Kevin." Andrea smiled a little. "Well I appreciate that Bruce," said Andrea. "What's Kevin like?" Bruce asked. "He's brilliant, smart, brave, and stubborn, just like you," said Andrea, "but he's also kind and compassionate. He likes playing basketball and baseball. He's also a really good cook. I think his cooking skills could be a run for Alfred's money." Bruce smirked and said, "Alfred and I will be the judge of that. I notice Kevin will be 17 soon. And he's a senior at 16?"

"Well, Kevin turned out to be way smarter than I thought," explained Andrea, "by three, he was able to memorize a vocabulary that normally a six year old could recognize. He could read just about anything with ease, and he was always learning new words. The caretaker at Kevin's daycare saw how intelligent he was, and so we had him start kindergarten at age four. He is really smart and brilliant. I told him about you when he was starting high school. But you can trust Kevin with your secret, Bruce. He's very trustworthy." Bruce was amazed at what his son was like. "Another reason I'm here regards something my company is doing," explained Bruce, "you see, we gave an opportunity to high school students to enter for a chance to win a scholarship to Gotham University with tuition personally financed by Wayne Enterprises. Kevin has won that scholarship to Gotham University." Andrea gave a gasp of surprise. "I remember Kevin entering for that," said Andrea, "he actually wanted to go to University of Washington, but I knew I couldn't afford that for Kevin. It's not easy being both a manager for a bookstore and a single mom. He just did it because he wanted to take a shot. We knew it was a one in a million shot, but still..." Andrea couldn't help but laugh at the sheer dumb luck. It was like Bilbo Baggins managing to find The Ring and escape with his life. "I'm just as dumbfounded and amazed as you are Andrea," said Bruce, "perhaps fate decided it was time to meet our son. Someone as intelligent and brilliant as Kevin deserves this opportunity." Andrea smiled and said, "I'm so proud of him..." Bruce held her hand and offered, "how about I pick Kevin up and personally tell him the good news?"
