A Lion Talks To A Canary

Kevin was now used to a routine for the past month. He'd feed and take care of Wilbur and take him to his college. Gotham University was a pet friendly college, and were fine with Wilbur being Kevin's therapy cat. Wilbur would keep Kevin company and always make him happy. Kevin also discovered that he had the strength and speed of a lion, and he could leap 36 feet forward like a lion as well. His strength meant he could lift anything beyond 350 pounds. But Kevin chose to use his powers not to be a big show-offy jerk, but to be responsible.

Another thing Kevin was used to doing was talking to Dinah Lance, AKA Black Canary. Dinah was a mother figure to many of The Team, and was always there to talk to them and listen if they needed help or guidance with a problem. They were sitting in a room, Wilbur sitting on Kevin's lap. "I see you're getting along with your therapy cat," said Dinah as she pet Wilbur. "Yeah, he's helping me get through a lot," said Kevin, "taking care of Wilbur really gives me something to do and helps with my emotions. I'm glad I found him. He was a blessing in disguise." Wilbur meowed in agreement. "He helps make it easy to go on living as a Splicer," said Kevin, "when I'm with Wilbur, he doesn't see me as a monster or a freak... It's like I'm normal again. And knowing he's with me makes it easy when I visit Barbara."

"Well it's nice to see your cat is positively helping with your self esteem," said Dinah, "that's very good. How are you sleeping so far? Experiencing nightmares?" Kevin shrugged and admitted, "I used to have nightmares about my transformation or the thought of Barbara hating me... I don't have those nightmares as often as I used to... but there's been one dream I've had that's stuck with me..." He fidgeted with his mane a little. "What kind of dream is it?" Dinah asked. "Do you promise not to tell anyone?" Kevin cautiously asked. Dinah held Kevin's paw and promised, "this conversation will not leave this room." Kevin sighed and recollected the dream.

"In my dream, Joker escapes Arkham Asylum yet again. But this time, I go berserk and take justice into my own hands... I hunt Joker down as if he were prey. I chase him into a church. As he runs like a coward, I roar, "GET BACK HERE, JOKER!!!!" He runs up the stairs and I roar, "JOKER!!!!!" He tries to go into the other room as I threaten, "YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM ME!!!!! I'LL HUNT YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH, JOKER!!!!!" I then leap into the air and corner him like a rat. I lift him by the neck, slamming him to a wall. I see Barbara's face as she cries in agony, and my grip on Joker's neck tightens. I glare at Joker as he struggles to breathe and I taunt, "can't breathe? Good. This is for Barbara..." Then I rip Joker's head out of his body and throw it into the moon, and I roar triumphantly."

"That's basically my dream," concluded Kevin, "pretty messed up, huh?" Dinah shrugged and said, "well, it's not THE most brutal dream I've ever heard. And even I'll admit, Joker deserves much worse. We've all had fantasies about wanting revenge, and some of those fantasies can be justified. But we can't act out on our fantasies. Revenge doesn't accomplish anything, Kevin..." Kevin nodded and said, "my mom would agree with ya... She got her revenge on the men who murdered her father, and she was still unhappy. All it did was make her feel empty inside, because before she found out she was pregnant, she had nothing left. She even considered killing herself before I came along." Dinah nodded and said, "exactly. We understand your anger. You're a young man Kevin, it's alright to have these thoughts every now and then. But you need to choose to resist enacting these thoughts. You're not a bad person Kevin. Remember that. And remember, you have to not kill Joker, for your parents, and for Barbara. But if you see him, you do not have to go easy on him." Kevin nodded and said, "I will." Much later, Kevin was at the hospital, visiting Barbara. He saw Jim was there. "Hey Jim," said Kevin as he took his usual spot. "Hey there Kevin," said Jim, "is that your cat?" Wilbur meowed. "Yep," said Kevin, "you could say he's my therapy cat. His name is Wilbur." Jim chuckled and pet Wilbur, saying, "well hello Mr. Wilbur. Aren't you a cute little guy?" Wilbur purred. Wilbur noticed Barbara sleeping, and then leapt over to her bed. He noticed her feet were covered in a blanket, and the kitten walked over to Barbara's feet, thinking they were a person. "What are you doing, Wilbur?" Kevin chuckled. Wilbur then pawed at Barbara's left foot, thinking it was something else. Jim couldn't help but chuckle. "You silly cat," laughed Kevin, "that's Barbara's foot." Wilbur stopped pawing at Barbara's foot and then walked on over to Barbara's belly, snuggling onto it, purring. "Well, he definitely likes Babs," chuckled Kevin. "I know he'll keep her safe," said Jim as he smiled. And so they stayed with Barbara until their time was up.
