Chapter 30

Spencer had trouble sleeping on the plane home from the most recent case. Everyone else had managed to dose off pretty quickly after the events that had just happened, yet Spencer's mind was elsewhere. He kept running over what had happened with Grace; how they'd managed to save her, how he'd kept in contact with her, how they had met when she was feeling particularly down one day. All that time, all those messages and phone calls, may have all been tracked by one of Tony's accomplices. He had thought they'd solved that case completely. Gregory in the phone shop had confessed to helping and had helped them track Tony down, he was only doing it because Tony had threatened to hurt his wife. Tony was locked up, he was going to be in jail for a very long time because of his body count and the way he calculated every kidnapping, drugging and murder. Yet there was someone else. Someone who had tracked Grace's phone and had monitored her location and somehow knew they met. How did they know? Purely by the messages they'd sent each other? Or did it go deeper than this?
Spencer's mind whirred with possibilities: a tracker added to Grace's phone whilst she was drugged, someone following her and keeping an eye on her? Grace had mentioned that they were going to get married, apparently it had all been secured. Was the person who was due to marry them the person who was now stalking her? Was the person who supplied the bag of food to Tony that same person, or did he have more help than we initially thought?

"Reid?" JJ had stirred awake at a slight bit of turbulence and had noticed Spencer in deep thought. JJ loved him dearly and she knew when something was wrong. He slouched in his chair, his hair messed up from the amount of times he run his hands through it, his face had a slight scowl as his brows knitted together while he tried to fix Grace's problems all by himself. Maybe that was his problem, he needed more help. He offered JJ a smile and she got up and headed over to him at the back of the plane, hoping they could chat without waking up any of the team members.

Spencer let out a sigh as JJ perched on the edge of the chair beside him, eagerly waiting for him to begin expressing the thoughts that had kept him up. "For once, I am at a loss for words." He said as he shifted his weight and rested his head on his hand. "Grace's mission... I thought we had solved it, but we haven't. It's frustrating because I can't pinpoint exactly what we have missed." JJ offered a sorry smile. She had a feeling it was going to be about Grace and the note the team had received because Spencer had gone to see her. JJ had promised Hotch that they were going to keep a close eye on Spencer, making sure he didn't close himself off again like he did with Maeve should this end in any way but a positive one. Maeve's case was complex and sadly didn't end in the way they had all hoped. All they could do was hope and pray that Grace's would not be the same.

"Right." JJ said carefully, knowing there was no point trying to get him to think about anything else. "What's troubling you?" Spencer sat up a little more excitedly as he began to use JJ as a sounding board for this thoughts. He ran through the story from beginning to end, finally stopping at who they had missed.

"I just think we've missed something. Something so small but so crucial. Did we get any results on those plastic bags that Grace had mentioned?" Spencer's eyes moved straight to JJ as he awaited her answer, however her facial expression told him all he needed to know. Her eyes moved to the ground as she let out a quick sigh.

"Nothing yet. We pulled so many bags from that house, all similar, just small white ones. We will have to test every one of them. It is going to take a long time I'm afraid." She offered him ab apologetic smile, but to Spencer that was just a cop out. Time was of the essence and he didn't have time to wait for them to find the right bag. By this time, Grace could have been kidnapped, or killed.

"Have we swabbed the insides for drugs? Ones with drug traces on the inside will be the ones we need to focus on. For now anyway." Spencer asked, but it came out more like an order. JJ nodded as she pulled her phone out of her pocket and sent a quick message to Garcia who would be able to feed it to the team. "I feel like the person who was going to marry them is key. But we have no idea who that is. Is it the same guy who gave him the drugs? Or are there two more people, at least, who were involved with this plot? What if Tony had threatened more people with their families and made them do work for him?" JJ could see Spencer was getting worked up by the idea of something else happening to Grace whilst they were away. His mind was working at a hundred miles an hour to try and solve something whilst they were midair. Even if he did solve everything, he couldn't even implement it until they hit the tarmac again. JJ quickly snuck a look at the time, they still had an hour left of this flight. Spencer would definitely work himself into a state by this time. She only had one suggestion that would work right now.

"Message her." JJ suddenly said, catching Spencer off guard as his mind whirred with possibilities of accomplices. He stopped as if he had been switched off at the plug, suddenly falling into a silent state as he stared back at JJ. "It will calm your nerves. I'm sure she would like to hear from you too. Didn't she mention the memorial was happening today?" Right now, arguing with Reid or telling him to stop thinking were pointless ideas. He just needed the distraction, and JJ knew that Grace was the only person who would calm his nerves right now.
