Chapter 2
"Hotch, get everyone into the room asap." JJ burst through his door clutching another FBI buff coloured folder. He called down to the cluster of tables and Reid, Morgan and Prentiss jumped up, rushing towards the room they loved and dreaded at the same time. It was the room that brought them all together, the one that let them all sit there, figure out a case and solve it. It had brought many happy memories of figuring out who the UnSub finally was and catching them but also remained a dreaded place in the back of their minds because it was a place of horrible pictures, terrifying stories and death. Lots of death.
"What is it JJ?" Reid said as he sat down next to Morgan who already had a coffee in his hands. She handed each of them a small bundle of papers with sympathy on her face.
"They found Keeley's body in Princeton Heights." JJ said regrettably as the team ran through the documents in their hands. Prentiss shook her head. Rossi put his head in his hands and sighed. Hotch got up paced around the room. This was not what they wanted – or needed – to hear.
"The UnSub obviously doesn't feel he needs to spend that much time with them anymore." Morgan said, throwing the papers down in front of him. They all glanced at each other, frustrated that they were no closer to catching this person and another poor innocent life had just been taken. This was the fifth one this month so far and the amount of time these girls were missing was getting less and less. An eerie silence fell over the table for a second as everyone took a moment to settle their thoughts and feelings and prepare to get back to work. If anything, this spurred them on more. They needed to catch this person before anyone else got hurt and they were going to do it the way they always did, putting all their brains together, using their skills and tracking this person down without them having a clue anyone even knew about them.
"Right, let's go over the facts." Rossi was the first to break the silence and say what everyone else was thinking. "What have we got so far?" Everyone looked over at Reid to begin. With his eidetic memory and his 187 IQ, he could remember more parts of these cases than half the team hadn't even got to yet.
"OK, we've had five female abductions, all around the same age and all with similar features. They go missing in the evenings, normally when they are due to meet people and just never seem to show up. They've all been abducted within Boulevard Heights but their backgrounds are all different, they have lived or their bodies were found outside of that neighbourhood. The first victim was India Marshall, a 25 year old accountant who was due to meet her friends at a bar on the 3rd but she never showed up. She was reported missing and three days later her body was found; she was still clothed, her hair was brushed and her clothes were still in good condition, no tears or rips. There seemed to be no signs of a struggle but they found drugs in her stomach that they believe she ingested with food or drink."
"The UnSub is dining with them and drugging their meals. They probably didn't even know where they were, let alone what was happening to them." Prentiss added.
"She died by asphyxiation. They believed she was suffocated with a plastic bag." Reid continued. "The exact same MO was found with our next three victims, Casey Arthur, 24, Laura Hancox, 22 and Olivia Steed, 21. They were missing for the same amount of days and all died from being suffocated. They were all well maintained and left to be found in the forest."
"And that's where Keeley is different." JJ added. The others checked through the paperwork once again. "Keeley was only missing for two days and by the looks of the ligature marks on her neck, she definitely wasn't suffocated."
"Why the sudden change?" Hotch piped up. "His plan was faultless before, why change with this girl?"
"I mean everything else fits, she has the same features, she is within that age range and she was abducted while waiting to meet someone..." Prentiss replied. "Maybe something just didn't click when he got her home?"
"It's a possibility." Reid answered. "If the others went along with it from the beginning in the hope they would survive, he would have been annoyed that she wasn't and could possible see her as a waste of his time."
"I mean, he seems to have killed her a lot more forcefully, that shows that anger and rage got the better of him. Suffocating people who are dosed up on drugs is satisfying for him; he can see and feel the life leave their bodies without them putting up much of a fight. With Keeley, it looks a lot more sporadic and messy, as if something got to him." Morgan said as he studied the few pictures of Keeley's body that they had.
"Maybe she knew him and said something that hit a raw nerve?" Prentiss added.
"Well there's only one thing we do know." Rossi interrupted. "Each time we've found a body, another girl has gone missing that same day."
"Does this guy never rest?" Morgan stated angrily, sipping his coffee.
"That's true. And if he's keeping to schedule we'll know about another missing girl by tonight." Rossi said unnervingly.
"They finally want our help so let's get there quickly. Wheels up in 20. Morgan and Prentiss, you take the new crime scene. JJ, I want you to team up with me, talk to the friends and family who were meant to meet these victims, see if there are any patterns to when they were meeting or where. See if they said anything similar to the other vics. Reid, I want you to look into the cocktail of drugs, see if there's anything about them that will give us a clue. Rossi will contact the police department and see if they've come across anything new." Hotch ordered, everyone jumping to their feet as soon as their names were called. "And let's get this guy before he hurts another woman!" JJ walked over to Reid and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Spence, the tox reports should be back within the hour. I asked them to compare the drugs from all the victims and see what they could find. We should get Keeley's back soon too. Hopefully that is our clue to getting this guy."
"Thanks JJ. I hope so too. I just feel useless at the moment. I couldn't even guess a profile of this guy yet." Reid sighed as he pinned up the picture of Keeley's body on the board. They both took a step back and looked at the board. Five women's faces stared back, smiling from a recent happy photograph the families or friends had given them. Next to that, now the five images of these women's lifeless bodies. JJ and Reid exchanged glances once again. They knew they were both thinking the same thing.
They were running out of time.
