Chapter 16

Hotch walked into the room with a stern look on his face and slammed a file down on the desk. Rossi followed in a minute later for dramatic effect, tapping on his phone like he was texting someone. Gregory shifted awkwardly in his chair and stared down at his clasped hands that were resting on the table.

"Why did you do it, Gregory?" Rossi began. He gave Hotch a quick look that said they were starting something they had already planned and were waiting for Gregory to take the bait. "Killing all those people?"

"No comment!" He said almost too quickly.

"Gregory, this is a very, very serious charge. If you help us, we may be able to reduce your sentence." Hotch sighed as he traced the file with his fingers, catching Gregory's eye.

"No comment!" He spat back once again. Hotch looked over at Rossi with a slightly confused look on his face. Did Gregory want to be put away for something he didn't do or was there just something he was hiding because he thought it was bigger than it was?

"Maybe even get you taken off Death Row. " Rossi leaned in and nodded clasping his hands together too as he watched Gregory's face twist in horror.

"Death row?" Gregory breathed out, shock filling his features. "But I-I didn't... Didn't do... It wasn't me that... Oh God!" He threw his hands over his face. Rossi and Hotch exchanged small smirks to say their plan had worked. Of course he was going to tell them everything now, he believed he was going to be punished for something they both know he didn't do.

"You didn't strike me as the kind of person who could do that to so many people!" Rossi teased.

"So many?" Gregory said from behind his palms, his eyes peeping through the gaps between his fingers.

"15 women, Gregory." Hotch said angrily.

"Fifteen?!" Gregory spluttered. "I thought there was only... well I mean he said... it was only a few!"  He rubbed his hands across his forehead to mop up the sweat that had built up so quickly. He knew he was in trouble now!

"If you have any information that could help us, lead us to the right person... now would be the time, Gregory." Rossi hinted and Gregory dropped his hands froms his face.

"He'll get me. He said if I told anyone he would make my life hell." Gregory wailed.

"Who did?" Hotch asked. "We can set you up in protective custody until we catch this guy, but right now all the evidence we have is pointing at you." Gregory ran his hands over his face and sighed.

"That's the problem. I don't know his name." Gregory sighed defeatedly. "He came into my shop, showed me pictures of my wife and told me to do what he said and he'd give me money and leave her alone. " Gregory said with urgency in his voice. "I panicked, I didn't care about the money but I couldn't have him hurt my wife!"

"Haven't you been divorced for two years?" Rossi piped up, raising an eyebrow at Gregory. He looked down at the table as if he was upset.

"Well, I'm hoping we will sort it out and get back together." Gregory said. "If I say ex-wife it makes it seem final."

"Have you told her about this man who threatened her?" Hotch asked. Gregory shook his head. "I think it may be best to, we can put you both in protective custody while we get this man but it'll probably be better coming from you than us when we barge into her house!" Rossi smiled at Hotch, behind that cold hard exterior he was actually very loving and wanted to help everyone in whatever situations they were in. Not many people were like that nowadays.

"Gregory, I don't mean to be harsh but you need to give us something to go on, a little more than that he's just a man. Otherwise we aren't going to get anywhere on this case!" Rossi added. "Anything you can remember, what he looked like, his mannerisms, anything that stuck out?" Gregory nodded.

"He was a loner, he would avoid eye contact with anyone else in the shop apart from me. At first he struggled to speak to me until he got the courage to shove the picture of my wife on the table. He looked uncouth, he looked like he hadn't washed in a while, his teeth were yellow and his skin was jaundice like he never goes out. He had a combover too, greasy but I think it was dark brown or black... God, I never imagined he was..." Gregory twitched his leg under the table.

"Killing people?" Rossi finished. "Kidnapping people?"

"He told me there would be a person come to me with a cracked phone screen. I had to ask what caused it and if they said a guy walked into them I had to fix it and install a device in it." Gregory blurted out, wanting to help.

"What device?" Hotch pressed.

"I don't really know. He handed me a bag of them and told me to put one in each phone next to the SIM card." Gregory sighed.

"Do you have any left?" Hotch questioned, getting his phone out and informing Morgan by text.

"Yes, in a black plastic bag by the till." Gregory nodded and with that the text was sent, Morgan was on his way to the shop to find the bag.

"Thank you Gregory. If you just wait here I'll have one of my colleagues set up a secure line for you to contact your wife and set up protective custody. " Rossi and Hotch stood up and shook his hand. Neither of them were ready to say he was under arrest for being an accessory to this crime, that could wait until this was all sorted. As soon as they were out of the room they looked at each other and nodded.

"Let's deliver the profile. "
