Chapter 1
"Yeah, ok Penny..." I laughed as I spoke, the back of my phone feeling hot in my hand after speaking to my friend for nearly an hour. "I'll be there tonight." I paced around my room for the hundredth time, convinced there would be a patch that was worn by the time I'd finished. I wandered over to my wardrobe and pulled the doors open, the phone tucked neatly in the crook of my neck. I pulled out a few outfits on their hangers and lay them out on the bed.
"Remember, we're meeting at the entrance of the park at 7pm. Do not be late. For once in your life Grace, you need to be on time." Penny rambled on at me as I stood back and admired the outfits I would choose from. So what if I was a little bit late? All the best people arrive late, that's why it's called 'fashionably'. I was never one to be on time to anything, I needed to perfect my look before I'd even stepped foot out of the door but today I felt like I needed to comply. We were travelling a long way and if I was late it'd be a whole journey of whinging which I was not prepared for.
"Yes, I know! We're getting a certain train and I can't miss it." I said, just so she knew I was listening. "Why Riley thought going all that way would be fun I will never know. We have pubs and clubs down the road from us, still in Holly Hills, why do we need to make this long old trip to Boulevard Heights?" Riley was a great guy but he'd recently made friends with a few people at his work place and they liked to be at the hotspots, the big nightclubs where celebs hang out and that wasn't really our scene. We preferred close places that we could stagger home from when we'd had too much to drink.
"You know him... Always wanting to impress the new while keeping the old." Penny said wisely. She was closer to him than I was, so whatever she said I merely agreed with. I always thought she fancied him, despite her denying it every time I brought it up. They were each other's types too; he was a football fanatic who was fit and toned, a thick head of dirty blond hair that was messy yet styled and he dressed well. She was slim, tanned and beautiful. She had long, flowy black hair and big brown eyes, full lips and curves in all the right places. They were a match I wish I could fit together but unfortunately I wasn't cupid. Riley had already found a girl he liked and I'm pretty sure he'd invited her to this club tonight. I had heard a little about her from Riley the last time we'd spoken on the phone but I never got a good feeling about them. The way he sounded when he spoke about her just wasn't what I would imagine. I thought people would be overjoyed, happy, constantly going on about them because it's something new in their lives that they are ecstatic over but he just seemed to ramble on as if he was talking about his mum.
"I know. I'm glad we're the old but I'm fed up of meeting these new people. They never last!" I laughed. "What happened to Adrian, Pete, Carrie, Joseph, Lucy and... who was the other one?"
"Jaydene." Penny said in a flat tone.
"Oh yeah!" I said as I let out a geeky laugh. "The one you had an argument with."
"I've had an argument with all of them." Penny said bluntly. "It's because of this job. Riley finds all the rich, big-headed idiots and attracts them for some reason... Then he had the cheek to complain to me that I was being rude and ruining the evening. I'm so glad that he found out the true them the next day." Penny was of course referring to the email conversation these work colleagues were having about him behind his back. He only happened to see it when he was being shown something by Adrian on the computer and the email popped up, the beginning of the message visible for Riley to see. He flew off the handle and went straight to his manager and HR, getting the whole team put on caution. He was then moved to a different office just to make sure he was 'safe' and that's where he met the people we are going to meet today.
"What are you wearing tonight?" I quickly changed the subject, knowing it'd only make her angrier if we carried it on and she'd turn up in a bad mood. I once again glanced over the outfits I'd put on the bed. Jeans, tops, dresses, skirts... I could never decide.
"I'm going with the old favourite, my LBD paired with red accessories." Penny said instantly, she'd obviously had her outfit planned out days in advance. "You?" I hesitated, running my gaze over the outfits one last time before looking out the window at the weather. It didn't exactly look like I was going to need sunscreen, so I opted for the safer option.
"My black leather skinnies and my white sparkly top." I said, putting them together and hanging up all the rejected choices. I looked over at my clock and saw the time, I only had an hour and a half to get ready! "Look Penny, I've gotta go now. If you need me to be ready on time I've got to begin now!" I said in a slightly humoured tone. I could hear Penny snigger on the other end of the phone.
"I was just waiting for you to say that!" She laughed. "Alright, so remember, 7pm at the entrance to the park. Don't be late."
"I promise!" I said to her meaningfully. "If anything, I'll get there early."
