EIGHT

Monday came quite soon and I got to school early. Kunmi was already waiting for me with a stack of invitations cards.

"Start from B class okay?" Kunmi said as I nodded and collected the huge stack pursing my lips.

I dropped my school bag and walked outside the class towards B class.

"You didn't call or text me" I heard a voice say as I turned to see Joy looking at me.

She looked georgous as usual and she was wearing a calm face. I swallowed my saliva as I took a decision.

"Thank you for accepting to coach me Joy, but I don't want to be coached by you" I stated firmly.

There was no way I was going to fall out with the girls before I clocked sixteen.

Joy raised an eyebrow at me "This is not your choice to make Rachel.  Mrs Olutola doesn't want anyone in her class repeating and I am to make sure of that. No one is taking your feelings into consideration. You do not have a choice" Joy said as I looked on stunned.

"Sandra" Joy called to a girl who was walking out of the class.

"What's up Joy?" Sandra asked as she glanced at me before turning back to Joy.

Joy collected the stacks of invitations cards from me and gave Sandra.

"Pass them for me" Joy said and Sandra opened one of the invitation cards.

"Its Kunmi's" Sandra said as she scoffed and walked towards B class.

I heaved a sigh of relief as I watched Sandra and her friends share it from class to class. I was still thinking of how to share it.

"Thank you" I said as Joy nodded at me.

"Follow me" Joy said as I walked after her to the school garden.

"From now on, you had better get to school early and meet me here. Get a new big note, jotter, higher education or whatever" Joy said as I slowly nodded.

Joy didn't say a word as she walked off. I heaved a sigh as I walked after her.

"Why is Sandra the one sharing my invitation cards?" Kunmi asked as I soon as I got to her seat.

"She offered to help" I quickly lied.

"Its surprising" Gani said as Kunmi laughed.

"She did a good job. Rachel would stutter out a thousand times even before she'll be able to give someone" Kunmi said and the girls roared with laughter.

I clenched my fists immediately. She knew that yet she made me share them. I became internally grateful to Joy and Sandra.

Kunmi continued rambling about the preparations for her party. It looked like it was going to be big. I decided not to mention Joy still coaching me.

"Lest I forgot, Rachel what's your problem?" Temi asked.

"Huh?" I asked confused.

"You fought with Donald!" Temi replied as I frowned.

"He badmouthed you guys. I couldn't take it lying down" I replied trying to defend myself.

"Badmouthed us?" Gani asked as I nodded.

"He was like I shouldn't trust you guys and stuff" I said trying to explain to them and Josie burst into laughter.

"Thats why you fought with him?" Josie asked as I looked at her confused.

"Ode lo mo" Gani said shaking her head.

"Don't call me a fool. I'm not a fool" I said getting angry.

Gani sneered at me immediately "You are a fool. He was clearly testing you. Rachel you are so naive that it sickens me. People like you are nothing but fools!" Gani said as I banged the table.

"I am not a fool" I yelled as Gani stood up as well angry. The look in her eyes made me regret yelling. Gani hated people yelling at her.

"You are yelling at me? Are you crazy?" Gani asked.

"Just don't call me a fool" I replied slowly.

"You are a fool dimwit! How dare you raise your voice at me?" Gani yelled as I swallowed my saliva.

As much as I ignored Gani's insults and all; I hated people calling me a fool but for the moment, I needed to appease Gani's anger.

"I'm sorry" I said slowly.

Everyone in the class was already looking at us and I was already fidgeting.

"Just get lost!" Gani yelled as she pushed me.

I staggered as I quickly held onto a table for support. The rest of the girls tried to calm Gani down as I walked to my seat under the gazes of everyone.

I was angry at myself for getting angry over a little insult. I knew Gani hated being yelled at, yet I yelled at her. I shook my head as I scoffed at myself.

I was a bad friend.

The rest of the day passed in a blur and I was constantly looking towards Gani's seat to check if she was fine and had calmed down.

The moment the bell for break was rung; I rushed to the cafeteria and bought all of Gani's favourite to aplogise.

"I thought I told you to get lost" Gani said with a sneer.

"I'm sorry" I said slowly as Kunmi nudged her.

"You shouldn't have called her a fool too" Kunmi said take a sip of her coke.

"As if she's not one" Gani said and hissed.

I heaved a sigh of relief as Gani started eating what I bought for her. I knew she wasn't angry at me any longer.

"Don't bring this your unkempt hair to my party o" Kunmi said as I touched my braids.

"I'll make another one. What about fringe?" I asked enthusiastically.

"Fringe? You?" Temi asked as the girls burst into laughter.

"Fringe will not fit you at all. You and your big forehead" Josie said.

"Let her make it nah and use that way to tell everyone that she has a big forehead. Tell me now, isn't she a fool?" Gani asked as the girls continued laughing.

"Abeg don't do worwor hair to my party o" Kunmi said as I smiled.

"Don't worry. I won't embarrass you" I said with a small smile.

"We'll see about that" Kunmi said.

"Don't forget my birthday gift o" Kunmi added as Josie laughed.

"I'll get an expensive perfume for you" Josie said with a wink and Kunmi hugged her.

"Awwwn..... I lorrr you" Kunmi cooed.

"I'll get you a new set of jeans" Gani said with a smile.

"Crazy jeans o" Kunmi said with a grin and Gani nodded.

"I'll get you an expensive set of earrings" Temi said as Kunmi winked at her.

"Rachel, what will you buy for me?" Kunmi asked.

"I'll buy you a pair of sneakers" I said softly.

"Really? There is this sneakers I saw on Jumia. I'll send the screenshot to you. I want that type" Kunmi said as I nodded my head in affirmation.

I smiled at Kunmi continued to talk about her birthday. She was talking endlessly and looked so excited towards the birthday party.

I wished my birthday was earlier too so I could be able to fit in with these people. So that Gani wouldn't endlessly insult me and use her sarcastic comments on me. So that Josie would start letting me on her secrets. So that Temi would stop treating me like an invisible being.

I just wanted to feel like I was part of the geng ; not some extra.
