Chapter 27
Janus sat by the window with his knees up to his chest and his arms hugged tightly around his legs. He was staring at the floor. Staring through it, really.
"Jan?" Janus jumped and looked up at Remus. "You ready to explain what happened?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah, sorry. Thinking." Janus sighed and got up. "Is it alright if I close the door? I don't really want anyone else to hear this."
"Yeah, sure. Whatever makes you feel comfortable." Remus shrugged. "And you can start talking, again, when you feel comfortable."
Janus nodded and closed the door. "It's kinda hard to know where to start."
"Well... you've already told me the main idea of what he does so... what happened earlier today?"
Janus laughed slightly at that. "God, it's only been one day. Feels like it's been a hundred. Um... well, I went back in and turns out that not only has dad been spying on me, he's also been sending his friends to spy on me when I'm away from the house."
"Sorry, what?!"
"Yeah. Apparently one of his friends saw us outside the bookshop. Which really sucks for me because I told him I was there alone. And also they saw us holding hands." Janus sighed and put his hands over his face, sliding down the door. "I'm not crying." He said. "I'm just confused. Why would he do that?"
"Because he doesn't care about you." Remus muttered. "He was spying on you too?"
"Yeah. Um, the woods at the back of the house. Thought they were a blind spot. They were not. Just to wrap up everything else that he did today with a neat little bow, he called me a slur, said I was ugly and that my scars were a punishment-"
"He what?!"
"Yeah. Also said that I had bad taste in guys and yelled at me to get out. Lucky he didn't hit me, huh?"
"Lucky he didn't hit you?" Remus repeated. "Jan, I'm going to call the police on him."
"No!" Janus said, jumping up.
"Why not? He's been a right dick to you and some of the things he's done are against the law. He needs to go to prison."
"My dad will kill me if we call the police on him."
"Well would you rather me go and yell at him?"
"No! I would prefer neither of those things because both of them end up in you getting hurt. And that is the last thing I want."
"Well the last thing I want is for you to keep being hurt by him."
"I'm out of his life forever now. He'll want nothing to do with me."
"Doesn't mean he can't still hurt you."
"We're not calling the police."
Remus sighed. "You're right. We're not." He pulled out his phone. "I am."
"Rem, don't you-" Janus sighed and cut himself off. "Whatever. Like they're going to believe us anyway."
"What's that meant to mean?"
"I mean that we're two 16-year-olds. We're teenagers. You really think the police are going to take teenagers seriously?"
"Well yeah. It's their job to listen to people and act on what they've heard."
"But they only have our word for it. Scratch that, only my word. That's not very helpful in a court case."
"What d'you suggest we do then?"
"I don't know!" Janus yelled. He buried his hands in his hair and shut his eyes tight, starting to cry. "I don't know, Rem."
Well.... if you were hoping for less angst, I'm sorry to disappoint you.
Bye,
Blaize
