Prologue

The Very Beginning

Six months ago...

"Brooklyn." My mothers voice rings from the basement as the sound of footsteps travel down the hallway "Kate is here to see you." She says opening my door to stand in front of my bed pulling at my sheets.

Those are words that I never want to hear. Kate, my manager for three years, rarely appears at my house unless it's to discuss an upcoming film, or to let me know my time as an actress is done.

"Mom!" I grumble. "Can you tell her I'll meet with her for coffee later this afternoon." I respond before snuggling deeper into my bed, pulling the covers over my face until my blanket is past my nose.

"Oh honey trust me I would, but." She responds opening my blinds causing the sunlight to come pouring into my small bedroom from the large window in my wall. I let out a groan and shield my face and eyes with the closest pillow I could find.

Who are you? The devil!

"Brooklyn, she came down here to tell you some important news so please clean yourself up, make yourself presentable, and come downstairs once your ready." She exclaims, her tone of voice sounding a lot harsher, she raises her eyebrows waiting for my answer as I nod my head.

Closing the door behind her she exits my room leaving me burning in the sunlight like a vampire. My eyes glance towards my white alarm clock perched on my bedside table, The bright green letters reading 12:28.

I groan as I pull myself out of my bed before slipping on my pair of white fuzzy slippers The legs of my fuzzy pyjama pants reach the cool hardwood floor dragging behind me with each step I take.

I slowly make my way into the bathroom. Standing in front of the mirror my appearance leaves me speechless.

My long brown hair, which I had in a bun last night, was standing on end, the ponytail which was what securing it was nowhere to be found. I quickly reach for my brush as I comb through it taming the knots.

Running back into my room with a toothbrush in my mouth, I reach for my white denim jeans and a lilac ruffle top as I quickly replace my pyjamas with the clothes in hand.

After fixing up my appearance, I quickly make my way down the marble staircase into the kitchen where my mother is sitting on the couch watching the news and sipping on a cup of coffee.

I find Kate sitting on one of the wooden chairs seated in front of the large oak table. Her light brown hair tied into a tight bun on the top of her head. She is sporting a blue blazer and a black pencil skirt as she is typing away on her phone.

"Oh Brooklyn how great to see you." She says giving me a hug after she noticed my presence. "Please take a seat." She motions towards the chair on the end opposite of her.

Sitting down on the red padded chair, I find myself staring at the floor, the butterflies taking flight in my stomach, as I am afraid of what she has to say.

"I have great news for you." She starts as I find all of the nervous butterflies leaving my stomach as I release the breathe of air that was held captive in my mouth. "I have landed you a starring role in the upcoming television series, Fates Game."

"Are you serious." I say jumping from my seat. "You have got to be kidding me! I've been waiting for this since I've started acting." Running over to where she's seated I pull her in for a tight embrace.

"Dead serious honey! But there's a catch." She says opening the manila folder which has been sitting in front of her. The folder is filled with papers, as well as a few photos and scripts here and there.

Of coarse. Something this good always has to come with a catch.

"You remember Ryder Williams, right?" She asks pulling a photo of his headshot out of the folder. "If you do decide to take up this offer, he would be your co-star for the show."

His dark brown hair is styled on top of his head as I find his bright ocean blue eyes looking back at me as the memories of the times we had flood back into my mind.

"How could I ever forget him." I say, venom laced in my voice. "How could I ever forget what he did to me."

She takes in a deep breathe, before releasing the air as a sigh. "I know you two didn't leave on the best of terms, but-."

"The best of terms. The best of terms!" I scream. "You've got to be kidding me! He almost ruined for career for gods sake." I throw the paper back at her not even taking a look. "I'm sorry I can't do this."

"Brooklyn please. Consider the opportunities this will present for you. This will put you on the map, this will make your name known, this is the start of an incredible career." She pleads placing the paper back in front of me.

"I just don't think that I can deal with him. Ten hour days, six days a week, six months of the year. I just can't." I mumble looking at her through my eyelashes.

"You know I hate doing this." She starts and instantly the butterflies return. "I'm giving you two options. You can go and find another manger, one who will probably not provide as many opportunities as I do, or, you can accept this offer."

I place my head in my hands. Out of all people, all of the actors on the planet, why did it have to be Ryder? Why the one who hurt me the most, the one who made me take the blame.

"I'll do it." I say instantly regretting my decision once she hands me the sheets. "On one condition." I add. "If I have any problems regarding Ryder, I will be leaving immediately."

"All I ask is that you give him a chance. You will be leaving this Friday for Miami, that's where most of the filming will be, aside from that, your schedule is as followed." She says reaching for a price of paper that is placed in front of me. "For about six months, Monday to Friday, for around ten hours a day, you will be filming, including weekends according to the scenes. As well as that there are several premieres, photoshoots, and interviews that you will have to attend, all of the information is in the sheet in front of you." She then hands me another sheet where it asks for my signature and I sign accordingly.

"It's been a year and a half since you've seen him last, who knows he may have changed." She says placing his head shot back on the table, I find his blue eyes once again looking back at me.

A laugh escapes my lips. "I find that highly doubtful. Once an ass always an ass."
