Chapter Eight: Home

Wally squinted his eyes, trying to view the shot that was taken. "Wait... the photo."

Roy looked confused. "Umm... what about it?"

"That man kidnapped them both... I think I remember him from somewhere." Wally said hopefully.

Roy didn't look convinced. "Dude. It's pitch black and all you can see is a silhouette."

"That's all we need, Roy." Wally said excitedly.

"We should be searching for Dick." Roy said, eyeing the picture. A tall man was dragging both of the men, and the child was not in the picture.

"Roy. I think this will help us with our search for Dick." Wally exclaimed, shaking Roy's shoulders. "Now, we find that kid that was a witness. The kid could have answers!" He continued.

"The kid is probably traumatized. And what the hell do you mean it could help us find Dick?"

"Remember how I told you about the mission a few months ago? Before Dick got fired?"

"Yes..."

"The guy that kidnapped those men... he was the same guy that tried to bomb the factory." Wally claimed.

"How do you know for sure?" Roy asked.

"I don't know for sure. But it's worth a try."

One Week Later
---

Kid Flash and Red Arrow were in the GCPD, waiting to meet up with the child and their mother.

The lean women entered, holding her small daughter's hand. The child still looked frightened, gripping tightly onto her mother's hand as if she would disappear if she let go.

The little girl became even more frightened when Gordon led the four of them to an interrogation room. Had she done something wrong?

Commissioner Gordon gave the little girl and her mother a small smile, and assured them they would be safe with both of the heroes.

It was now the four of them, seated at the table. The little girl twiddled her thumbs and moved her gaze to the floor, ashamed to speak. She was only ten- but she was old enough to know that touching someone in places that they didn't want to be touched was beyond wrong.

"I know you've been through a lot... but we just need to ask you a few quick questions." Wally said kindly, smiling brightly. "Can you do that for me?" He asked.

The little girl- Makenna- shrugged.

"Your mother will be right here with you." Wally reminded her, and she nodded.

"T-the two m-en tried t-to..." she stuttered, but was too traumatized to continue.

Roy spoke up. "It's okay, it's okay. We know. What happened after?"

"A-another scary man s-stopped them. H-he had a gun." She explained quietly. "Then he t-took them in his t-truck." Makenna continued.

Wally purses his lips in thought. "So it was a truck? Not a car?"

"It was a t-truck." She confirmed. Her mother rubbed her shoulder comfortingly.

The mother sighed. "Listen, boys. We've had enough interviews. If you mind me asking, what's this for? Aren't you both in the Justice League?"

Wally and Roy- especially Roy- cringed a bit at that but then brushed it off. "A friend of ours has gone missing, and we think the man that kidnapped the two rapists has something to do with it." Roy explained.

"I understand." The older woman replied.

"Thanks for your time." Wally finished, giving the little girl one last smile.

---

"Alright. So, we know that the guy uses a truck, not a car. We also know that he could possibly pull a stunt like this again. If so, we could catch him and get answers." Roy explained, and Wally nodded.

They were now both back at Roy's apartment, discussing their thoughts.

"Dude, whoever that guy was... he was good. Really good. We need more help." Wally claimed seriously.

"Who do you suggest we talk to? We can't go to the league... they'll think we're crazy." Roy said, scowling. He hated the league at this point.

"Batman, maybe?" Wally suggested with uncertainty. "He has a right to know." The speedster added.

Roy shrugged. "I'm not sure. We need more evidence."

"You're right. He probably wouldn't believe us." Wally whined, slumping in his chair.

Roy groaned. "Who do we ask then?"

Wally sat up straight in his chair, grinning, as if a lightbulb had lit up in his brilliant-speedster-brain.

"I have a pretty good idea." He said, smirking.

Three Months Later
---

"You know the drill, Dickie. Kill one- the other lives."

"Kill both, and you get a reward."

Dick didn't exactly like Mystery's standards, because it made him seem selfish.

He didn't kill both because he wanted a reward- he killed them both because he enjoyed it. He killed them both because he wanted Mystery to be proud.

And he was.

Every time.

Every time Dick shot two bullets- one in each of their skulls- Mystery praised him... the kind of praise Bruce never gave him. At this point, he didn't give a fuck about Bruce.

Every time he picked up the gun, he reminded himself that it's what these people deserved. They were rapists, murderers, psychopaths... thy didn't deserve to breathe. They didn't deserve to be put in jail just so they could escape again and experience freedom that they weren't supposed to have.

So, Dick didn't even think twice before shooting the female prostitute and the male drug dealer in their heads.

"Good job, Dickie. You're doing great." Mystery complimented, patting the boy on his shoulder.

"Thank you." He replied bluntly- even though hearing those words meant the world to him. Someone actually cared.

Dick had killed quite a few people now- maybe thirty to forty. At first it was hard, but then it became something he felt was right.

Dick had also been put through training sessions that were less harsh, and he was treated with more respect. He actually got to sleep in a bed in his own room, and Mystery even gave him his own shower.

He told Mystery that he didn't want any mirrors. The man didn't give him any.

He also became healthier, and his wounds and injuries had properly healed. Mystery even made sure his concussion was fixed.

"Be ready for training tomorrow, four am sharp. Get a good rest." Mystery ordered, and Dick nodded.

He exited the chamber into the corridor that led to his room.

Dick had no idea what this place was- he hadn't been allowed to go outside. There were no windows, no vents, and no exits that he knew of.

When Dick got to his room he plopped on the small bed, and sighed. Killing people was a bit tiring.

He laid his arms out in front of him, glancing at the healed cuts on his wrists.

The rest of his body was worse.

He told himself that it was worth it, and Mystery did it to help him become stronger.

Dick sat up and pulled off his blood encrusted clothing, and got in the shower. The water washes all the blood off of his skin. Blood that wasn't even his. How could he enjoy to do something so disgusting?

He was a murderer. Just like the people he had killed. What was he doing?

But then, Dick reminded himself that he was saving other's lives by reducing the amount of killers.

He was doing the right thing.

---
The Next Morning
---

Dick dodged one of Mystery's lethal blows with ease, smirking.

This was getting easier and easier by the day.

Mystery attempted to swipe the boy off of his feet, but Dick casually hopped over and did a backflip.

The man approached him first, sending powerful punches that the boy blocked. Dick flipped over Mystery to his back, attempting to swipe him off of his feet from behind.

Dick failed, and Mystery attempted a roundhouse kick right into his chest. Dick flipped over his head again, dodging the attack, and smacking knee into the back of his neck. The man winced.

Dick had never made the man show any sign of pain until today. He smiled.

Mystery flipped back and ducked under a kick thrown at him, and used the opening to swipe the boy off of his feet.

Dick crashed to he ground and groaned, running his head.

"Good work. You're getting better." Mystery complimented, and Dick resisted the urge to smile.

"Clearly. How long was that?" Dick questioned.

Mystery looked at a digital clock on his wrist. "It's seven in the morning. So, three hours. Thats the longest you've been."

Dick smirked.

"I think you're ready to do something for me." Mystery claimed, a smile forming under his mask.

"Really?"

"Yes. Are you willing to kill?" Mystery asked.

Dick raised an eyebrow as he stood up off of the ground. "I think you know the answer to that."

Mystery laughed. "Absolutely. Just wanted to clarify... the mission is in Gotham."

Dick's jaw dropped to the floor. He hadn't expected this... Mystery wanted him to kill someone on his own turf?

Dick reminded himself that it wasn't his turf anymore. Dick had reminded himself of a lot of things lately.

"Gotham? Are you serious?" Dick asked with shock.

"It's been eight months for fuck's sake. Are you telling me you're not ready?" Mystery snapped, sending him a glare.

Dick put his hands up in defense. "No, I am. I am ready."

"Good. Don't have too much fun visiting your old home... I'll give you the mission details later. Clean up." Mystery ordered, and Dick nodded and left the chamber.

The Batcave
---

After what Wally and Roy had discovered, they asked Artemis for help- Roy quite reluctantly agreed.

The trio found that the man they had been looking for had continued to kidnap people such as rapists, murderers, drug dealers, and other petty criminals. They never caught the guy.

After many failures they all decided to ask Batman for help, who was furious because they hadn't approached him sooner.

The four of them didn't tell the league or the team about anything that they knew, and decided to investigate on their own.

"Who was kidnapped this time?" Roy asked Bruce, who had his cowl down in the Batcave. Artemis felt worse when she realized Robin had gone to her school and was right in front of her this whole time- she also felt bad because people bullied him and she had done nothing about it.

"A 23 year old prostitute and a drug dealer in their thirties. They were also seen being. Taken by the mysterious person." Bruce explained as they all gathered around the Batcomputer. He brought up an article about the two that had gone missing, and a picture showed a dark silhouette dragging them.

"How do we catch his guy? We've been trying for months." Artemis sighed.

"He is very stealthy. If we want to catch him, we need to figure out his next move." Bruce said, and the others nodded.

Bruce sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "We'll find Dick. Don't worry." Wally assured, giving a lighthearted smile.

"I hope so." Bruce said sadly.

"How about we patrol Gotham? Keep an eye on everything? We may run into him." Roy suggested.

"Good idea. It should be dark in a couple hours, that's when he strikes. Get ready and meet me back here." Bruce ordered, and the teens nodded and left to the zeta platform.

---
Mount Justice
---

The zeta tubes announced the three teens to Mount Justice.

The trio had visited Mount Justice a couple times each week, to say hi to Zatanna or Megan. Wally and Artemis would also show up if Black Canary- yes, Black Canary- had a mission for them. Batman had decided to no longer do so and passed the task on to Dinah.

Roy only showed up because he didn't have a problem with Zatanna- she was actually very nice- and he didn't see why she couldn't help with the search. She hadn't really done anything wrong. Megan on the other hand, he found quite annoying. At least she had the decency to break up with Connor after what he had done.

Connor and Kaldur were only really around for missions and training- Connor had become more isolated and stayed in his room at Mount Justice and Kaldur was in Atlantis more often and didn't visit Mount Justice as much.

They entered the rec room, and Megan and Zatanna were cooking something.

"Hi Roy, Wally, and Artemis. We're cooking some spaghetti. Would you like some?" Megan offered kindly. Artemis and Roy were about to politely decline, but Wally- of course- said "yes" and Megan ushered all of them to the table.

Roy and Artemis didn't mind in the end, because they were a bit hungry (they would never admit to that) and the spaghetti was delicious.

"Thank you both for the spaghetti. It was great." Artemis said with a smile, and both girls smiled back.

When Roy didn't say anything, the female archer nudged him and he gave a blunt "thanks" as well. Wally was too busy shoving noodles in his mouth to say anything.

"What have you three been up to? You guys are always together." Zatanna pointed out, twisting noodles around her fork.

"Um we're just-"

"Searching for Robin, aren't you?" Zatanna assumed, setting her fork down. Everyone stared at each other awkwardly.

"Zatanna-" Artemis began.

"I want to help." She interrupted.

Megan sighed. "Zatanna, he's gone. There's nothing we can-"

"No! He's not dead." The magician countered, pushing Megan's supportive hand off of her shoulder.

"She's right, Megan. We aren't giving up on him." Wally said firmly.

Megan looked at them all sadly. "I know it was hard losing him. It wasn't easy on me either... but it's time to move on. Robin is-"

"Don't. Say. It." Roy warned strictly, glaring daggers at her. She leaned back with surprise, her eyes widening. Roy looked pissed.

Megan didn't answer. Instead, she stood and left the room, leaving the four of them by themselves.

---
A Few Hours Later
---

Dick was given casual clothing, also kelvar to put on underneath. Mystery instructed him to put in brown eye contacts, just to ensure that Dick wouldn't be recognized.

The boy didn't like the idea of having to wear contacts but if it meant keeping his secret safe that's all he needed.

He put a red sweatshirt over the kelvar, and a pair of jeans. He left his room to talk to Mystery, who was waiting in the corridor.

"You look good. Here's what I need you to do. See this girl?" He asked, pointing to a picture of a young female with bright green eyes and curly blonde hair.

"Yes."

"Her name is Makenna Eastwood. I'll give you her address- your job is to kill her without being seen and without leaving evidence." Mystery explained firmly. "Got it?"

"Yeah... but why a little girl? What did she do wrong?" Dick questioned curiously.

"She didn't keep her mouth shut when she should have... stupid girl." Mystery groaned. "Anyways, I will know if she's dead or not so don't play games with me. Don't try to run away either, Dickie. You know I'll always find you." He added darkly.

"I know, sir." Dick replied.

"Good." Mystery finished.

Suddenly, Dick felt a prick in his neck as his vision began to go blurry. His legs wobbled and he lost balance, his body slumping to the floor.

And then he went unconscious.
