Chapter 68

Sean's POV

I got the page to come to the ER and was confused. I wasn't scheduled for a rotation today. I rounded the corner and was met with North's tear-stained eyes. I felt like my knees were about to buckle. "North," I said, trying to stay calm.

He grabbed me, crushing me against him. "We didn't know what to do. She just collapsed, then she was seizing, and she wouldn't stop," he babbled in between sobs.

"Where is she?" I finally demanded.

He pointed to the right. "Room 102. They're only letting one in at a time. Silas is already with her."

One, my ass, I thought as I stormed into the room. Marissa was connected to several monitors and looked deathly pale as Silas held her hand, whispering softly to her. Dr. Torres was talking with the nurse but acknowledged me as soon as I entered the room. "Sean, I'm glad they paged you. Your husbands said you were on shift."

"James," I said, taking the chart he held out to me. "I'm surprised to see you, um, I mean after the incident at the office."

He grimaced, "Yes, well, I'm the on-call OB for this week. If you want another doctor, I'm sure I can contact someone."

I shook my head, "No, I'm sure it will be fine. She can tell us otherwise if it bothers her," I assured him. "What happened?"

"Did you get any of the texts?" Silas asked. I patted my coat, realizing my phone must be in my locker, and shook my head no. "We took her into the office to meet a client. Jackson is suing them for leaving the company and working with her. She was upset, but seemed okay, then just collapsed and started having a seizure." He looked down at her as if afraid she was going to break.

"According to the paramedics, she seized for almost ten minutes before stopping without any intervention. As you can see, brain function seems normal and there are no indications the baby was harmed. She just hasn't woken up." Dr. Torres added.

I pulled the stool next to her bed and sat. "This isn't the first time. Before we knew she was pregnant she collapsed and then remained unconscious for several hours. I've run dozens of labs and can't seem to pinpoint what it is."

"Silas mentioned that Axel said a doctor once attributed it to a stress reaction," he said. "I'm assuming since the man who attacked her is now trying to go after her career, she's definitely dealing with stress."

"Her father is facing murder charges in the death of her mother. We are supposed to leave for Houston in a few days," I added. Silas suddenly jolted and grabbed his phone out of his pocket, swearing loudly. "What is it?" I asked.

He stormed toward the door, "Pull the curtains and lock the door. Jackson's here and demanding to see his 'wife'," he growled.

"No, you stay. You're more capable of keeping him from crossing that door, Silas, than I am," I said, pulling my coat on and closing the curtains. "Let me deal with him from a hospital perspective." Silas grumbled but resumed his spot near her. "You good?" I asked Dr. Torres. He merely nodded.

I stepped through the door, pulling it securely behind me and waiting to hear it lock - which it did, then went around the ward in the opposite direction to meet Jackson at the information desk. He was ranting at the receptionist while North was pulling Axel back. "Oh, Dr. Green, thank goodness you're here," the woman said. "Um, this man is claiming to be the husband of Ms. Ryland and demanded to see her. I told him he would need to speak with her doctor of record first."

"Mr. Porter, how can I help you?" I asked him calmly.

Jackson looked me up and down then scoffed, "You can't be her doctor."

"Why not?" I asked. I made a slight motion with my hands toward the others. They didn't need to start a fight here. That would only work in his favor.

"Aren't you her..." he started, then caught himself. "Well, um, then fine. I want to know my wife and child's status. I demand you let me see them."

I felt my hands clench and said through gritted teeth, "Ms. Ryland has listed that you are not allowed near her for safety reasons and I intend to honor my patient's wishes. Therefore I cannot give you any information, nor confirm or deny her status as a patient in the hospital at this time." I shot a warning glance at the on-duty nurse.

"Bullshit," Jackson sputtered. I simply stared at him. "Fine, I'll be back with a goddamned court order and the cops. You can't keep her from me!" He slammed his fist on the countertop and I motioned to security. He held up his hands and laughed, "You picked the wrong fight, Dr. Green," then turned and stormed out the door.

I stood there waiting to be sure he'd left before I raced back to the room. I pounded on the door, "Silas, open up it's me, Sean!" Within seconds the door flew open and I stepped in. "We need transport back to the mansion now," I said looking at Dr. Torres. "I'll requisition the needed monitoring equipment, but she can't stay here." The others had reached the room by now. "We need to get her back to the manor and then figure out where we are going next. He's not bluffing and with that crooked cop and judge in his pocket, he can get the order." I'd already begun unhooking the machines when I felt a hand on my arm.

"I'll have the equipment sent over now. She's going to be fine, Sean," James said quietly. "I'll shred the records now." I gave him a thankful smile and went back to unhooking the equipment.

"I've got a car waiting in the garage now," Axel said as Silas picked her up in his arms. I put a blanket over her and led them down the service entrance. I climbed into the car along with them, not bothering to go get my stuff. Axel handed me his phone, "Text the others and let them know what's going on."

Group Text: Axel (Sean): Everyone this is Sean, I'm using Axel's phone. Marissa collapsed and was rushed to the ER with a seizure. She has not woken up, but we are headed home. Jackson showed up and demanded to see her - says he was coming back with a court order. He referred to the baby as his. We need to get her away from here now.

Owen: Kota and I will get the first available flight out.

Gabe: Victor is getting the jet prepped now. If you take off before then we can arrive let us know where to reroute.

Corey: I've alerted the gate and security staff. Come in through the underground garage.

Dominic: Luca and I are on our way to the manor. My men are following Jackson. He did reach out to that shady cop - Kline. No word on a judge yet, Roberts is in Texas for Dalton's trial.

Axel (Sean): We are about ten minutes out. Corey or Victor, please disable my cell phone. I won't be returning to get it. I'll get a new one later.

Corey: On it.

I finished the messages and looked around at my husbands and fiances. All attention was focused on her. Silas held her against his chest as North cradled her feet in his lap. Brandon and Axel looked on with concern while I just kept trying to figure out our next move, knowing she was still going to insist on Houston. We pulled into the garage where Corey and Raven were already waiting with Dominic and Luca. Raven took her from Silas's arms and carried her up the stairs. I could hear him start to softly sing to her in Russian as he walked. He and Corey took her to her room and stayed with her as the rest of us gathered in the kitchen.

"I can get us on a plane to Italy within the hour," Dominic said.

"She won't do it," Axel said.

"She's unconscious. I say we ask for forgiveness after the fact," North said, surprising me. "I had a bad feeling when we left this morning. Damnit, we can't protect her here! I don't know what to do," he groaned, letting his head fall into his hands.

"We kill the bastard," Luca said quietly.

"While I'm not opposed to the idea, it won't solve the problem," I said. "Jackson is only one matter, what we are really dealing with is the entire Academy. How the hell do we take them down?" They all looked at me in shock. "Think about it gentlemen. If we kill Jackson then who's next? Kline? Roberts? All the other unknown faces of the Academy? That's who our real battle is with ultimately. We can't just run, we have to find a way to take down the entire thing and fast," I growled.

Dominic began to clap his hands slowly, "About damn time one of you figured it out. The family is willing to help in any way - that includes taking down the Academy."

"Raven's family is in as well," Brandon added. "He reached out after Dominic showed up." He looked over at the other, "Not that we don't trust you man, but you were a wild card at first. Raven wanted to make sure he had all the bases covered."

"Buona, buona, that gives us more allies," Dominic said, with a grin. "I'll discuss with Raven about some of the other families. We might be able to form a temporary alliance. The Academy may be corrupt, but not even the mafias approve of them. They have no honor, no heart." He looked directly at me, "No matter what, I still get to kill that bastard," he growled.

"Agreed," was the chorus around the table. Now we need to decide if we are leaving or staying. I headed up to the room to check on her.

Author's Notes:  I'm feeling a bit better mentally and physically, but haven't written much. One more week until term break.  Not sure how much writing I'll be able to accomplish this week, so sorry in advance.

Lastly, I'm entering into the unknown with the upcoming chapters.  This story (as they all seem to do) took on a life of its own - I have no idea how it is ending.
